  • “A World Within a World: Bay Houses of Long Island” documents the history and traditions of Long Island’s South Shore bay houses in the Town of Hempstead. The film profiles Long Island families who have owned bay houses for over 100 years including the Muller, McNeece, Burchianti, Warasila, and Jankoski families. Based on fieldwork by folklorist and maritime ethnographer Nancy Solomon of Long Island Traditions, local filmmakers Barbara Weber and Greg Blank capture the essence of how bay house owners have persevered and endured through severe storms and hurricanes, as well as eroding marshlands, while preserving traditions that began in the early 19th century. Funding for the film was provided by the Robert L. Gardiner Foundation. Released March 2020.

    Was born 1955 and raised in Freeport N.Y. and was a bay rat. Always owned some type of boat. Fished, water skied,Scuba dived and at times lived on the water. My father 3 uncle's ,grand parents and great uncle came from Cuba. They all worked and owned their homes and had businesses in Freeport. my first job was buss boy at the Yankee clipper restaurant. First girl friend was niece to the chief of the Freeport police department. What a great time and place to grow up.
    Thank you Freeport always in my heart. Left N. Y. At 55 years old -12 years ago for ft.lauderale FL. And never looked back. Have everything here I could ever need and money to enjoy it. Gary STEVEN BLANCO. ALL my living family is in Florida too.

      At the Yankee Clipper restaurant, you couldn't beat their king crab legs dinner! Fond memories of that place.

    Really good doc. growing up on LI in a family that was constantly out boating, the Bay Houses were just a part of the landscape, great to finally learn some of their history and hear the story of some of the people that live in them.

      The bay houses on meadow island can be sold but it's rare. You cannot buy a bay house that is on leased land. The only way to get one on leased land is to become friends with a current bay house owner who can add you to their lease, if you are a town of hempstead resident, but it's rare unless you are very very good friends with that person. Most bay houses are passed down within their families.

      @@LongIslandTraditions I guess I’ll just remain jealous of you guys and be happy for you.I’m out on the east end so I have no affiliation with Hempstead township so...maybe setting up a tent on Bird island in Moriches bay will be as close as I come to LI in that dream like you guys😂.
      Excellent video production by the way-really well done.have a good summer

    Do they have running water? I saw a gas stove. How do they get gas?

    • @LongIslandTraditions
      @LongIslandTraditions  Год назад +1

      There are no air conditioners. Some have solar panels and others have generators. Most have a well where they can get water. Propane gas stoves.

    Questions;
    Have a deed?
    Cesspool?

    • @LongIslandTraditions
      @LongIslandTraditions  Год назад +1

      Most are on leased land from the Town of Hempstead or the Town of Islip but some are on privately owned land with deeds. There are no cesspools - they have composting toilets instead.
