I am growing banana tree s all around my food forest. But I made sure to plant banana trees that don't get no more that 6 feet in hight ( that is the hight of the leaves not the stem.) All you have to do is cut out the young trees and use them as fertilizer for the other fruit trees. So you are getting food, mulch, and fertilizer for free. This is working out very well for me and my family for generations.
Great observations Paul. I actually find them to be less maintenance than other trees. Other trees to keep small you really have to plan and think about. Bananas I just pick one and cut the rest and let one grow next to it when it gets big. But you know the height and I find they have lest pest pressures. Squirrels eat all of my fruit before it is ripe enough for me to eat. Bananas and Citrus are the only thing they don’t eat. Rats bug both but I don’t get total losses like I do with other fruit trees.
Joe Biden says we will be having food shortages. If its going to be bad as they say it is going to be, then maybe you might need those bananas. Im planting more and more.
I have some dwarf type bananas and yes they do grow quickly and will multiply a lot. However, I have them in one corner of the backyard. The only things I do with them is remove the stalk after harvesting the fruits and water the plants once or twice weekly. That’s it. Of course, I don’t have all the fruit trees that you have in your backyard so my banana plants do not adversely affect any other plants!
No argument here. I laugh at myself as a fruit lover and new to Central Florida, I just babied my 4 different banana plants through those freezes. Lived in Hawaii for years and considered them weeds; messy-looking and attracted vermin. Not to mention that sap any time you want to trim/chop. I do love apple bananas although the ones here are slightly different than the Hawaii common variety. There, they don't have to be dead ripe to be edible. I have one of each (I have a good amount of room so it's not going to encroach) Apple, Dwarf Namwah, Kokopo and Pisang Ceylon. Your yard looks great after all that hard work! I'm sure someone will like the keiki (pups).
I also lived in Hawaii, but we live in south Florida now... we loved the "Williams" variety in Hawaii, so I tried growing it here in south FL but it just doesn't grow well here... dwarf Namwa is our best banana so far... we have about 12 different varieties now. Got all our banana varieties from "Going Bananas" nursery, and a couple from friends in the area. Good luck in central FL growing them... I think as long as you feed them a LOT (bananas are heavy feeders) and mulch them (15" deep mulch) and like Paul said water them via irrigation, keep them cut back to no more than 5 keikis (we also call them keikis) per spot then yours should fruit well for you
@@FruitfulTrees Just keep ducks and chickens and they will not leave even one banana plant alive. I am having a challenge growing banana plants because not one plant is left alive.
I live in Hawaii for 4 years and now I’m in central Florida. Every year freeze gets my bananas and we have yet to get any bananas. I have almost given up growing things in Florida. The soil where I live sucks and the annual freezing has killed many of my citrus. I have had some success with persimmons and blue berries and im going to try plantings some pineapple guava
Nice video Paul, I hear you... they're constant maintenance, unless you have a couple acres and plenty of room to just let them grow wild when you lack the time to care for them... like us... we know eventually we'll get around to trimming them feeding them mulching them, etc. Sometimes we have helpful wwoof volunteers who help us out greatly with banana care which is always such a relief... but one thing I just gotta say... when a banana produces fruit it is properly called a "bunch"... you may be used to calling it a "rack" as most people are, but the proper term is bunch... I had to train myself to only say bunch... and every time I do, I remember that song that goes "6' 7' 8' BUNCH, daylight come and me wanna go home... carry me banana, daylight come and me wanna go home"
I feel as though it’s not that the banana plants are pests or overbearing. I think you just mismanaged your layout. You say “look how close this is to ___” but you planted them there lol.
You have to keep on top of the bananas. I constantly cut the dead material and put around my fruit trees. They are great "crop and drop" material to be mulching around your avocado trees, etc. Don't put them out by the curb for pick up; put them around your fruit trees! Good stuff!
Yep always learning. It's good to fill out the space because they fruit fast but I rather eat more papayas anyway. You got enough crops from them and once the space gets close you cut them and mulch the fruit trees. Good work there!
This is blasphemous! Haha :) I have 8 different kinds all over my yard and keep planting then in new spots. My yard is smaller than yours. I only want a few mango trees because as those get bigger they require a lot of pruning for them not to get giant. I am afraid of not being able to control the growth. I do agree digging up pups is not easy.
I love and welcome my banana tree varieties. Any plants that will grow here. My property was mostly gravel and couldn’t even grow grass when I first acquired it. I have a giant eucalyptus that causes the most problems for me. I just haven’t got the heart to take it all the way out because the wild birds live in it. I’m going to get two more banana trees to plant. The lady I’m buying them from for $5 each doesn’t know what variety they are. I have a small property in a busy area. Very interesting video. I just wanted to know how I can identify the banana trees I’m getting today.
Im going thru and cutting out all palm trees from my property in preparation for a little forest im doing, bananas have definitely been on my list too grow but im planing on finding one variety that will produce really good and grow a few plants of it cause (like you) im limited on space. I would live to have them grow all over but i also would love to have a at least one or two plants of all sorts of fruit trees. Im doing the same with my raised garden beds. Im really cracking down on what i grow. Focusing more on what grows really good and getting rid of the duds.
I love my banana trees. When the new plants emerge, just transplant or dig up and bury them. Same thing with the stalk after it produces. Earthworms love them and worms provide the best fertilizer.
I noticed that you have too many mangoes and theirs going to be a time when you are going to be without a fruit to harvest, you could have some white zapotes and American paw paw both could fill up your beautiful yard with very delicious fruits, have a blessed day Paul!
How to terminate bananas: while growing bananas, only keep mother(has bananas), one daughter(one medium size) and one grand daughter, and remove the rest. When decided to terminate, after harvest, instead working hard to cut down to bottom and dig out, leave the whole thing-will dry up in several months. And keep cutting off new suckers, whenever come out. Some point , It will stop producing suckers. I have 600 banana but it is easiest thing to get rid of, but it takes times.
I definitely see your point with the space they take in your yard. I have my bananas in pots. Trying to live Miami dreams in the PNW, so growing bananas to fruit is a project. Got pups last summer and just put them back outside this week. Growing dwarf variety’s- Nan Wah, Grand Nain, Ice Cream, Manzano and Teeny Tinny. If they give me fruit, I’ll be ecstatic! Just got my Julie mango this week as well. THAT is the real prize project.
I can't wait to cut down bananas because they make for compost gold! I understand what your saying but to me its not a problem its a benefit! Old saying rings true, one man's trash is another man's treasure!
I told my new neighbors to be careful with bananas too, since they are planting various fruit vegetation. If they dared add bananas, to not go nuts with them as they multiply quickly. It’s easy to get sick of them, and yeah, they take a long time it seems to bear fruit. Then, it’s too much fruit at once. I don’t spend much time on mine since I don’t like them like I like mangoes and berries, and still get bananas. Really don’t fertilize all that much and I have the groupings fenced so the fence surround keeps them supported/not tipping. I hack their leaves in half or off completely whenever necessary, but I too kind of regret having them at all as they just take up too much space. Also, I wonder if we really are not meant to eat the seedless ones as the Word says in Genesis 1:29: “Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;” To imply, plants that don’t yield seed(s) are not food for us. Something to consider…
Hi Paul, great video about my favorite fruit. If it were up to me, the more banana plants, the happier I would be. What video equipment did you use? The quality of the video is excellent. Was it recorded in high def or in 4 k?
For an urban environment, yes, not the easiest to maintain, but if you have acres of sandy soil you want to improve, I don't know of a better way than bananas, certainly better than Brazilian pepper which can also improve soil but harder to remove and no food.
I have the dwarf variety and I wish I had your problem. I am so disappointed mine don't grow fast or tall enough. I feel like you should planted dwarf varieites because yours look huge. I have watered and fertilized mine and never had them grow out of control or take over, I could only wish. I have 3 different ones and I removed 2 of them. It was very easy, the chrome is a giant ball that you just dig out with minimal horizontal roots. Getting rid of that gets rid of future bananas.
Thanks for the advice. I have several in my back yard that are completely useless. They were gifted to me by a neighbour but it turns out they're a pretty bad wild variety.
