Acceleration & deceleration: The Comeng is a familiar sound but is slightly beaten by the cool-sounding X’trapolis (except for the pop when the Comeng is accelerating, especially in the City Loop). Don’t really fancy the high pitched whine of the other two trains, even though they’re a quieter ride. Idling: It has to be the grumbling, hissing and sighing sounds of a Comeng stopped at Flinders - it’s like a comforting warm hug. Horn: Nothing beats the 3 tone of a Comeng. Doors: HCMT is too much like fingernails on a chalkboard. This one goes to outward opening Siemens. If I could build a train, I’d take the original X’trapolis and keep the original 2-lined LED displays at the front of the train, and original Connex paint with the yellow stripe and different shades of blue. I’d also keep the rainbow Connex upholstery and cushions but give it HCMT floating seats. Then I’d give it Comeng horns, double pantographs and Stage 3 PIDs at the ends of the carriage. I’m not sure which one I like the most: the X’trapolis double sliding door closed gangway or the Comeng double window with swing door naked gangway. I’d also give it Siemens sliding doors. Finally I’d give it Hitachi opening windows.
I'm not really a fan of the doors on the Siemens as I've seen them malfunction when people block them or mash the button (things I wish people wouldn't do but here we are). I prefer the relatively simple straight-opening doors of all the others, though the Comeng doors don't lock (they come from a time when we didn't worry about actually locking the doors shut with anything more than constant pressure), and the button on the HCMT is just... not nice. It's not even a real button, and in the most petty way I hate it. No, the Xtrapolis by far has the best doors - tactile button, which you can hold until the doors activate, smooth and fast opening, and a pleasant sound that isn't too loud.
The siemens announcement has since been updated and has the sydney announcement chime at the start. I wonder if there slowly doing that with all of them
though I agree that the Comengs are old and long overdue for a replacement, I will definitely miss riding them and listening to the sounds that they make, it's a nostalgic thing for me. I'm very excited for the X'Trapolis 2.0 fleet to enter service, though! they look great and seem like a worthy modern replacement for the Comengs. also, it's nice that they brought back the Comeng's fast door closing beeping noise and put it on the HCMT!
The Metro Tunnel is on track to be completed by 2025 and it will have the Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham Lines running through it. Also it will have direct airport connection via the Melbourne Airport Rail Link by 2029. There is also the Suburban Rail Loop which is a 90 km rail line from Cheltenham to Werribee via Melbourne Airport. It’s still 3 decades away from completion, but half of it from Cheltenham to Melbourne Airport will be underground with SRL driverless trains.
Gotta love the comengs, especially the EDI refurb ones because they have a clear destination board and that as soon as they pick up speed the vibrations under the floor stop, unlike the Alstom ones that at all times shake the floor more than a VLocity.
Please do it for Perth :) My friend is a massive Transperth nerd. What you should know: There are two different voices. I'm mostly familiar with Comengs and Xtrampolines. It could just be because I'm used to them, but I find their noises far more lowkey and relaxing. Was quite shocked how screeching the Siemens sounds on arrival and departure - don't know if I would ever get used to that squeeling noise.
Which station did you record these at? I live in Melbourne, so I'd love to know!! Every one of them is very unique. The Comeng and HCMT are quite loud though. Oh, and the HCMT "Now arriving at" announcement. From what I heard, it was arriving at Caulfield. Ive been there before, but it a surprise to me that the HCMT stops at Caulfield!
I recorded these at different stations. I can't remember exactly were but I believe I went to Anstey, Moonee Ponds, Reservoir, St Albans, Altona, Carnegie and a few others.
I like the comeng horn. But sadly all of the horns on the comengs have been replaced by newer horns. It's sad because the horns used on the comeng trains were first used on older diesel and old wooden body suburban trains.

Add the Xtrap motor sound as well, it sounds epic
The x trapolis is the type i ride most and it feels too normal for me now 😭
It’s a classic; almost everything’s changed but at least the old rainbow Connex fabric lives on 😍
Lucky that more are going to be built haha

The X'Trapolis happens to be used on my line (Mernda), but I think I like their sounds best - kind of sounds like gear shifting!
They do have a cool sounding motor!
