  • Our perception and definition of beauty has morphed over time, so instead of trying to define everything we focused on three areas of the beauty industry: haircare, skincare, and makeup -- to show you just how far the industry has come. From Overton's high-brown face powder to Rihanna's Fenty Beauty, here's how African American beauty standards have evolved. #BeautyGurus

As someone who grew up in norway as a child of an african immigrant I felt so ashamed of my skin colour (also my heritage and background, used to distance myself from anything linked with Africa or being black) and felt completely lost not finding anything that fits my skin tone. In India skin bleaching is sadly still a big business. The most well known brand is called "Fair and Lovely" and they hve billboards and commercials that overtly imply that if you use the product and lighten your skin then your life will improve. It is so mainstream and reinforced in the culture there that I have been offered skin bleaching everytime I went to a salon. And I'm a pale ass white girl about 3 shades above paper. It breaks my heart and infuriates me to see beautiful women of all shades being told they should ruin their beauty and health by bleaching their skin.

Speaking of the color code. The saying was. If you're white you're alright, if you're yellow you're mellow, if you're brown stick around but if you're black get back. It's 2019! It's time to change destructive and outdated narratives about what it means to be Black and start speaking our truth. At the start of our day, our mantra should be. Say it loud! I'M BLACK AND I'M PROUD!

    • @tikimillie

assesinbattle actually my intent was to let them know that not just black people enjoyed their content but people of all sorts of different races and backgrounds.
Considering my current profile pic is a straight up pony, knowing my white and thus not neccesarily the target audience might not be so hard to decipher. I mean sure, they mainly did this for black people but im sure they’d appriciate to know npoc people are interrested too.
But yes. If i wasn’t incredibly insecure about the way i look and actually used a picture of myself in the thumbnail people could see i was white and i wouldn’t be letting them know.
I guess it could be seen as me wanting to be all like “oh hell ye im white and im proud” but that wasn’t my intent at all and im sorry if i was too naive to see that.

I think my overall favorite part of the black beauty wave, is that we are Unapologetically ourselves. I know I say it time and time again, but there is no lightening techniques (like stated in the video), emphasizing our thick natural lips, and my favorite part ofc, the natural hair styles! (I'd really love to see a video on hair if ever possible) bc wearing my afro gives me so much confidence istg

@robin mcgregor Well foolish one, we don't wear the type of bonnets that white people made. The ones that black people wear are made by black people for our hair texture. It is a completely different style. Also, seeing as you lack comprehension skills which is proven by how you could not read, I said, "As though she invented them." I said she specifically referring to the white woman who claimed she invented it knowing it resembled a bonnet that black people use while pricing it above 100$. She has since apologized.

Loving this new wave of black beauty we are experiencing. I LOVE all the natural styles and melanin makeup that's now available. It's funny though, my parents who were very pro black when they were younger, have very different views on this movement, especially the natural hair movement. I currently wear my hair natural but I have worn it straight and everything in btwn. Has anyone else experienced this difference btwn the old "black & beautiful" movement & the current one?

Yes, my parents prefer natural hair on bw but think it should be "tamed" with a flatiron or hot curler. They're very old school. I love natural hair on bw and find it super cool and uniquely beautiful. Some people don't know how to style it well, but some do and it looks great.

Important to mention; however, this will never stop!
Dammed if we leave our hair natural (we could be told; oh my goodness!
What happened to your hair? Or you should straighten it, or that it is unkept)
      Yet on the other hand, if we as Black women, do put chemicals in our hair;
Or weaves, or extensions or dyes; then we get accused of:
Not being Black or Black enough or not like being Black, or that we have self hatred)!
This war on Black hair (and how we do our hair, or not do it); and how we do our makeup will NEVER END!
We should be entitled to do what we want to our hair, our make up, and other lines of cosmetics (including putting in brown contact lenses, or whatever coloured lenses).
Is it a big deal when White people get a tan? No! And they shouldn’t be harassed for it either if they do, nor be accused of self hate!
But it seems like Black women are always criticized for almost everything we do.
Even dating outside of our race, you name it, we will get bashed!
There are videos of Black girls who are and we’re considered having or being light skin getting bullied at school for their light skin and looser curled or wavy hair.
They would be accused of “thinking that they were cute/cuter than the darker girls because of their aesthetics!
Really? Seriously? That says a lot about the accuser! And why should anyone care if someone thinks that they are cute? ( If they are humble, than who cares)!
If not, than why even associate with them?
Please know your worth and keep your head up and move on!
Stop worrying about what the next girl is doing especially if you don’t like it!
Stop the bashing of each other and mind your own business instead!

As a white chick with curly hair that grew up in antique southern town. I remember my grandmother having to go up to my elementary school multiple times raising kane because the teachers found my hair distracting and wanted me to straighten it or would tell me to wait in the hall. One kid went as far as cutting my hair in class without even getting in trouble. This was the late 90's. Some places only except straight and white.

First off I’m sad my Azie is gone 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭😭I loved you guys together 💔💔no shade to the new girl though, you did an excellent job 😍😍✊🏾❤️ Secondly, as a black makeup artist working for a brand like MAC Cosmetics, MAC still at times struggles with coming out with products for women of color. For MAC living by the credo all ages, all races, all sexes, all genders, I look at them sideways when I can’t get a Bronzer from them and my sisters of the lighter persuasion can smh, but hopefully that will change. I love what Rihanna has done. All makeup brands, high end and drug store need to step it up and level up in the words of Sis Ciara.
Beauty to me is embracing who you are fully and loving yourself. My favorite beauty icons are Nina Simone, Josephine Baker, Dorothy Dandridge, Grace Jones, Lupita Nyongo, and so many others lol. I just love being black and I love this channel. I still want my Azie back though 😭😭 #bringbackazie

I went from flat iron queen, to all natural unapologetic curly. As a millennial mother, I will pick up the torch of self pride and love that was put down for the sake of fitting in. I want my baby girl to always love her skin and beauty. Not to feel like she needs to alter a single thing about herself to make others around her feel comfortable, because in doing so, she will never feel comfortable in her own skin. Yes, this family goes in public with their natural hair, the way it grew out of our head.
