I am KEI TSURUMAKI, the chairman of the Matsuri Marching Festival. Thank you very much for attending the event the other day. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Having it turned into a video brought back the emotions and atmosphere I experienced at the venue. This is my favorite space. We are committed to creating even more exciting events. We aim to organize competitions that marching fans not only in Japan but around the world desire, and we will continue to evolve in the future. We look forward to meeting you again at the venue.
I have been watching Japanese marching band on RUclips for nearly a decade. NISHIHARA AND and AIMACHI ruled the JMBA. I am definitely entertained. Please reach out to American Media so "we" can watch live.
I haven't done anything with marching band in many years since I was last in High School. Seeing all of these bands from various schools performing so well is bringing back some fond memories of when I played as well. Easy to say I'm very impressed by all of their skill!
Blue Stars and Blue Knights hosting their first camp in Japan is honestly probably one of the smartest decisions ever made. Edit: my bad Blue Stars Second edit: Blue Knights is also holding auditions in Japan now.
@@jackcallahan1848 I meant like they are having ACTUAL audition camps there not like accepting video auditions and stuff, they are making it easier for Japanese musicians to participate in the Internation org. lol
I marched at Phantom Regiment with Satoshi in '96 and '97. He barely knew English and of course we taught him all the wrong things, but he was so kind and charismatic even then that I am in no way surprised that he went on to do this. Portions of this video have been shared in a Facebook group that contains the 1996 Phantom Regiment members and everyone immediately recalled him and the character he was. Thanks for sharing this with the world. It's brilliant.
There's an organization called WASMB that has been doing that for awhile now (I've kept up with them off and on since about 2008 or so, and I remember them being even older than that). They're not a "premier" event like BOA Grand Nationals, DCI or WGI Worlds is, but they do have international participation. They held competitions in the US in 2017 and 2023 but they didn't have wide participation from the American groups. When they held it in Japan in 2013 quite a few of the top Japanese groups showed up and they shut out alot of the other international competitors, but they all ended up losing to Calgary Stampede from Canada. It's an interesting setup and judging format.
Every time I see Japanese bands I'm blown away by how clean their shows are. They seem to utilize a lot more horn movements in their choreo and their marching seems to be a bit more traditional (more similar to the president's own than say, the bluecoats); I'm also impressed by how some Japanese groups (not the ones in the video) can march "uncommon" instruments like bassoons, concert euphoniums, or French horns. I'm glad you're working to shine some light on Japanese marching, as I feel like it'll be a really good thing if in the future bands from all over the world can play in the same events/competitions and share their different styles (even thought it would be a nightmare for judges to try and find a way to judge so many different bands while still making it fair for each style of band)
This is absolutely crazy. A marching band with 144 people in a country I didn't even know did marching band things, that's literally bigger than my band and we're 6a in texas. Also the middle school band at 7:25 playing something I saw UNT play for their marching show is actually insane. I'm glad to have been exposed to this, it makes me want to go practice.
I'm glad you touched the culture of Japanese marching bands!😊 I think the behind-the-scenes scenes taken in this video are valuable that are not found in videos related to Japanese marching bands, so I would like to take this opportunity to look forward to the increase in the number of people who come to see Japanese marching bands. (I'm also looking forward to future videos👌)
Thank you for taking the best videos from Japan!! ️ I'm very happy that you made an easy-to-understand video of marching in Japan, which we casually play! As a player, I would also like to experience American marching...!
In 2002, the Yokohama Inspires drum corps came to the US to compete in DCA. DCA Finals was on Labor Day weekend, so this was around or before when the Inspires would normally have their first show. They finished FIFTH. Imagine how they would have done if they were at their end of season level of performance.
We finished fifth having had less than three months working on the show for DCA, whilst also working on our show (of completely different music) for competitions in Japan.
Those elementary schoolers were ROCKING IT! I haven’t even watched the rest of the video yet, but they do body/choreography better than a lot of high schoolers I know😂
Consider doing something similar in the various DCI locations in the coming year. It would be interesting to see the local culture with a local tour guide as well as learn more about the marching scene in that area of the country. It would be a nice change of pace from simply watching another performance video, etc.
I attended a show last month at that same gymnasium!! But I was bummed I couldn't get tickets into the show with the elementary and middle school kids, but I attended the 2nd half with the high schools and all-age corps, and it was amazing to see and hear live!! Also, yes, Shonondai High School was so good!!! And btw, another 2022 BD ageout (with Noa) was from that school. So the talent didn't surprise me.
Yeah a few times you turned the camera around to yourself, jaw agape, and that was my exact reaction too. AMAZING stuff. And I can't wait for the next episode cause one of my first thoughts, seeing the size of the performance venue, was "If they don't have football fields, where do these kids rehearse?"
Can we get a seminar from their instructors on how to get teenagers to feel so comfortable in movement?? The confidence level of these kids is insane!!
The marching out here in Japan is crazy good. I volunteered with the Mercury Winds in 2020. I was blown away at how good a junior high school corps can be. There are even elementary school kids in that program. Drum Corps Japan was last weekend. ALL of the groups were amazing. I don’t say that to be kind and complimentary. They were all actually good. Well written in music and drill to complement the performers’ ability and then some.
Beautiful video! I've been in awe watching past videos of the Japanese marching competitions, but I've never seen anyone give us a look at the culture behind it and am looking forward to that next video showing more of the preparations and rehearsals. Also, where do these groups get their music arrangers and drill designers? Are they freelance artists that collaborate with multiple groups or does each school have an in-house show designer? Do students study with university-level musicians for their playing skills, or do these schools just all have incredible music educators?
There are music arrangers and drill writers that do freelance work and write for multiple schools. And sometimes the music arrangement and drill design is done in-house by the band director or a staff member. Usually the instructional staff is composed of alumni but also can be university level students teaching on the side as well.
The groups that participate in DCJ, JMBA or festivals like Matsuri often recruit DCI staff to design for and coach the group. Soka Renaissance Vanguard is well known for using Blue Devils staff, Aimachi is well known for using Cavaliers staff. I couldn't say for sure what Shonandai does, but I do know they've had several kids go overseas to march DCI. I also know their band fees are INSANE (like $8,000 insane!) so a lot of that must go into bringing in staff (they also do some overseas traveling like Kyoto Tachibana does). But this isn't the "standard" way Japan does it. This is just what the top groups do. Most of what we get exposed to from Japan tends to be the "best-of-the-best" of what they do. It's not always representative of the way it's done everywhere in Japan. The majority of Japanese marching groups use a more in-house approach (director or student designed drill/choreo, stock arrangements etc.). Which is still mostly how it's done in the US believe it or not.
Thanks for the great video! It would be awesome to see you react to Hebron high school’s show from this year. It’s probably one of the most difficult music books I’ve ever seen from a high school.
Apparently a Japanese marching band visited my high school band and one of their warmups was to stand in a circle and play an F concert for 1 hour straight
I swear. More Japanese Marching bands/drum corps should do performances in DCI locations! They're at a level that I think can rival even the Blue Devils! And the Blue Devils are aruguably the best drum corp/marching band in the US, and probably the world too, so to see Japanese bands at that level is super impressive!
Why can’t kids in America have that kind of talent😂 the discipline that families must instill in their kids makes me so jealous as a teacher Also it looks like the Shonandai group has shrunk in numbers quite a bit compared to some older videos i looked up. Any idea why? They still sound phenomenal even with a smaller group
As an educator in the US as well I share that jealousy! But also from my experience being in Japan, the entire culture of their society is completely different. That discipline and obedience is just the standard there so it is a lot easier to teach. But of course there’s always pros and cons to that too!
God that’s clean, also the shock and joy I felt when I saw that kid near the beginning stand up with a mellophone, amazing. But yeah, really clean and innovative choreo, super synced up, Awsome drum lines, I’m not quite sure their high school are DCI level, yet, but they speak to my soul and are nearing the level the level of our good ol US of A’s high school marching bands, individual skill level is close though, I still think BOA, and UIL shows are more… entertaining. The ones I’m the video just have a different feel and idk what it is.

Shonandai shares their end season vids on their RUclips channel (they're also known as "White Shooting Stars"). Probably the best scholastic marching group in the world. They'd win BOA for sure, and would likely make finals in DCI World.
Shonandai High School used to be massive (for Japan); upwards of 70 horns, and a battery of about 8-5-5. Size has come down in the past couple of years, but not the quality. You should have come to DCJ championships.
Nishihara HS in the early 2000s is my favorite. I believe the director at the time was 1996 Cavaliers. Fantastic drills; incredible guard. Spanish themes maybe influenced by Madison Scouts. However, DCI should be copying Japan, and not the reverse. Great report, thank you.
Depends on what impresses you more! Texas bands are amazing and the scale of their production is massive! But there is definitely value to recognizing the level of talent from individual to individual across the board! And I think Japan is incredibly impressive in that regard!
Texas (and other BOA bands...not to mention DCI groups for that matter) pump their entire wind line through $100,000 of mics, synths, mixing boards and speakers to amplify and bassboost the louds, along with coloring the wind line with chorus/strings, reverb, and synth layers to give it more shimmer and hide its imperfections, while using equalization to enhance the balance. Japan groups can't use electronics (their circuits don't allow it). It's a lot easier to play with a good sound when you don't have to play way past your best sound in order to simply be heard by the crowd.
Maybe you are missing part of the Japan story if the All-Japan Band Association (AJBA) marching shows are omitted. Very different from the JMBA shows.
