  • Handsworth then & now in motion.
Handsworth is a suburb situated in Northwest Birmingham, England. This video nostalgia takes you back during the Victorian/Edwardian era when Handsworth was rapidly expanding. And new developments meant a particular interest in the entertainment industry with the advent of the cinema. Revisit Soho Road and its commercial parade.

My parents moved to Hansworth in the early 1950s & were married there. I went to Hansworth to give to give a seminar 20 years ago and as I was driving through the busy high street I saw a tall black guy pull a gun out and walk menacing down the street, as people scattered as fast as they could. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
These photos remind that once Hansworth would have been a decent place to live. The people I met in Birmingham were friendly and warm and I love the accent. Hansworth was a scary place 20 yrs ago god knows what it’s like to live now. Thank god my parents moved to Manchester.

I remember in the late 60's my mom used to go to the once Regal cinema. By then it became a bingo hall. It was like an adventure. We would walk it all the way from Albert Road, through Linwood Road then right up on Soho Road. Mmmm!!! all those sweeties and the man that played the organ in the intervals good times😁 Thanks for all your hard work👍🏾

I only went to the REGAL once, back in 1949. I was with dad, who drove the car to a Garage ,for repairs. It was right opposite the REGAL, As the work was going to take about 2 + hours, we went to the REGAL. When we came out, the Car was ready.

Born in Brum 1941. we moved about a bit', and lived in Handsworth from 1948--1950. We walked many a mile up and down Soho road and Rookery road etc. I recognised many buidings, Pubs and cinema's. etc. We were regulars at the Rookery Cinema, Saturday morning for kids. At the performances end, we'd all burst out the doors like a flood, immitating Batman , or Hoppalong Cassidy. The effects of the war could still be fealt, with rationing, shortages and cueuing , but we had a happy childhood , despite the moving of home and school so much.

We were allocated a house in Baker Street after being bombed out and lived there till 1960, so I know Handsworth really well gran lived on Junction Rd my cousin in Hampstesd Rd. The Regal cinema was a "posh" date, I had a Saturday job in Woolworths and I loved the Library, Swimming in grove lane Baths ,playing in Handsworth Park, Happy memories.

Just finished watching all three videos. Brought back lots of memories of living there in the sixties, seventies and early eighties. I remember going to the “pictures” on Saturday mornings at The Regal. Learning to swim at Grove Lane Baths. Spending my pocket money in Woolworths ( Iceland occupies that space now ). So much to say......Anyway! I enjoyed remembering the good times. Thanks for the memories.

The Plaza, right opposite the School which was William Murdoch Secondary Modetn when l went there. It was Rookery Rd School before that. Happy years back then, I’ve been back twice ( now live in Oz) but couldn’t go back again to see what’s happened to it, too sad.

Lea Rene` Hi Lea, your memories are the same as mine, that English culture we knew has become a mis mash that has lost something we once knew as the English way of life, your school in Rookery Road is still a school, my boys school in Perry Barr / aldridge Road has vanished into history, all we have are the memories, I am afraid the world is a different place now. God bless, take care.

Anybody remember the Elite cinema on Soho Rd? We used to call it the EELIGHT (lol). Knowing nothing about a French pronunciation. It used to be near the library and swimming baths if I remember rightly. I saw the movie "Imitation of Life" there with my friend Sheila, bawling our eyes out!!!! (lol), childhood days.........

I agree! Making these type of videos have me wonder if we are not actually dealing with psychopaths. And I am serious! It seems that Bham Council has a kick at demolishing fine buildings for soulless cubicles. I know, we all have a hobby but theirs (destroying historic buildings) is deadly.

Hello Andy, thank you for watching. More videos on Handsworth specifically or different part of Bham?
On Handsworth, I would love to but these videos take so much time to make that I would prefer making some on different parts of Bham before I think of doing more on Handsworth.

@@mimibarn I agree. Handsworth was not the best place to grow up in the 1970s and 1980s and problems continue to the present. I only visit through these videos as I still have a lot of nostalgia for the place, My family lived in Ashwin Road before I was even born and it was a lovely area by all accounts, now it is drug infested with lots of problems.
