    you cant include his FG % from back then and then say "well today with those numbers he wont get the ball" ...he would be way more efficient in todays NBA cuz he can score just as much but much easier...he also does not need to shoot 3s, because he would constantly get foul calls like they do now and would most likely avg close to 10 FTs a game which would increase his efficiency a lot.

    Iverson won 4 scoring titles when KG, Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Melo, Duncan, McGrady, Carter, Dirk, and many more were in their primes. He may not average exactly 43, but he definitely could lead the league in scoring by a good margin. He got to the basket when teams had legit PF's and Centers at will. With the floor being spaced with tons of small ball players he would get and finish at the rim much easier. Plus most of the top players in the league still score in the mid range, and he would have his way there also. He could shoot 3's, and his speed off the dribble would give him lots of open looks. The thing that folks forget is he was relentless, and his mindset was attack at all times. He was a much more efficient scorer than Kyrie, even though Kyrie is more nuanced. Iverson would be un-guardable in this era, much more so than in his era. Defenders aren't the same as they were even with the floor being littered with guards and forwards, and if he had decent shooters around him it would be over. He's a much better scorer than any current player in the league even with his inefficiency.

    People criticize his efficiency when in that era efficiency was all-around low. In his prime he averaged - 29pts on .425% on 24 shots in 41mpg. In the late-90s and early 00's most all-star guards were shooting around 45% so while his efficiency was not the best, it was still close to par. He relied mostly on drives/lay-ups and mid-range 2's, which in today's game he would absolutely flourish driving the ball with absolutely no deterrent in the paint or hand-checking. Plus players back then weren't training to shoot 3's like they do now. While he was a mediocre 3-point shooter, I bet he would be able to shoot around 35-38% in today's game. His likely modern day comp would be SGA for sure, but much faster and more athletic.

    Obviously AI would be more efficient in the modern game. The main reason modern NBA players are more efficient is because of the spacing, the lack of defense including an overall lack of effort on that end of the court, and the way the game is played. Teams do actually play defense in SHORT SPURTS in some games in today's game and you see the offense instantly become less efficient, missing shot after shot, turning the ball over, and the pace slows dramatically. And the minute the defense lets up the pace and efficiency picks right back up.

    • @100pBuggin
      @100pBuggin 6 месяцев назад

      the lack of effort has only gone down because of spacing, when there is this much spacing, it is near impossible to play good defense. when you have to guard every player past the 3 point line it is impossible to be able to keep up. Every superstar REQUIRES a double team or else they are scoring 40+ ppg and guess what, when you have to double then that leaves someone open, you pass to that man and now everyone is in rotation, and with the amount of space it is impossible to close out on players. Defense is NOT worse today than it was before, things evolve over time they do not devolve.

    • @WutTheDeuceGaming
      @WutTheDeuceGaming 6 месяцев назад

      @@100pBuggin near impossible? No it's not. Not only is effort an issue, so is lack of fundamentals. Help defense isn't taught anymore. People constantly have their back to the basketball, a HUGE no-no. They don't fill the gaps on drives correctly. They don't see their man and the ball when defending. They gamble a TON. Basically everything you're taught in middle school, they aren't doing.
      Not to mention a lot of teams play drop coverage on screens, which basically ensures the offense is getting a good look out of it instead of hedging or icing the screen to take it away. Don't even get me started on transition defense. Mofos don't even know how to do that either.

    • @100pBuggin
      @100pBuggin 6 месяцев назад

      bro things evolve over time they do not devolve. Coaches are not getting paid millions to teach their team bad defense lmao, a lot of it has to do with statistics as well. It may be better to not help on someone attacking the rim because the alternative is a wide open 3 which is worth more points than a drive to the rim. A LOT of it is statistics. it may look like bad defense but it is not. These coaching staffs and schemes are levels ahead of what theyve ever been because of statistics. Once again humans learn from the past and evolve, we do not devolve.@@WutTheDeuceGaming

I think we need to be fair across the board with these players. Damian Lillard is considered a great shooter and he is also under 45% in his career and under 40% from three. Some players are remembered more favorably than others I guess.

    You also underestimate that EVERYONE's field goal percentage was down. Every team was barely putting shooters out there. Multiple 7 footers camping the basket at all times. Fact of the matter is, he wouldn't need to shoot 3s. Again, can't be touched and he was unguardable on the perimeter. He's feasting at the line in todays NBA. Not only that, we saw his efficiency significantly increase while on a better team in Denver. He was still averaging 40 mins per game, his shots went way down and his % went up.
    He was also consistently averaging between 8-10 free throws per game, that number gets to 15 in today's defenseless NBA. Take another look at the eras for a second as well. He played in an era that was LOADED with defensive big men. Todays era is about stretch big men, who is stopping him when he gets to the hole? Jokic? LOL.
    Philly's second best offensive player was Aaron Mckie, and he won a 6th man award while scoring a whopping 11.6 points per game. Prime Iverson (2005) would be a monster in this league.Iverson lived in the paint, and refs blowing whistles on a tap on an arm. Iverson was a high percentage free throw shooter so he will dominate in that category alone. Iverson also developed a deadly mid range at the peak of his career and also has a fast release. Today NBA players imitate Iverson step back. What people don’t notice why it was hard to guard his step back, because it was in all one motion he’s step back was so smooth. A lot of players step back reposition there feet then shoot. Iverson step back was so lethal because he didnt have to reposition he feet he would just cross left or right step back and smoothly going into a jump shot. No pause no reposition everything was just in one motion. His step back was pure art, and mastered at it especially during his short stint with Denver. Iverson would easily average over 30ppg

    37/38 for sure. Don’t talk about his era and his efficiency metrics and then just assume he couldn’t adapt to this era. His 3 pt shot would be better, he’d take less long twos, get to the ft line more, and take advantage of less physicality in the defense. Maybe 43 isn’t realistic but he definitely could he just likely wouldn’t aim to do that

  • @RobbieStacks90

    Prime Allen Iverson from '96 to circa '03 averages 35+ easily because
    1) He was a ballhog
    2) He was a great FT shooter
    3) He'd be allowed to take 40 shots a game because every game goes at an up tempo pace nowadays

  • @jmcgee39
    @jmcgee39 6 месяцев назад +2

    He probably would. He did put up a career 26.7 ppg in the hand checking era and when they'd wait on him to drive to the rim.
    To Windy's point, he was a low efficiency player so whatever his usage rate was then wouldn't really be a factor now and the Leg's point yes he would need to work on his 3 ball but his middy was always money and players today still use it. He making it sound like they outlawed the middy.
    The one thing they didn't talk about was the spacing on the floor.

    This dude was a legit running back. Aside from the speed and shiftiness, his relentlessness would definitely make him dominant. Imagine Westbrook with a better finish and shooting. With a stretch 4 and a stretch 5, driving lanes would be extra wide for him. If big men couldn't stop him them, who would stop him now? But having said that, it would take somebody like Mike D'Antoni with his "7 seconds or less" offense to get him to average 40. He ain't gonna win, but I believe he would average 40.

  • @zoo05zoo
    @zoo05zoo 6 месяцев назад

    What's really funny (and a bit disappointing) about this discussion is that they aren't necessarily saying Iverson couldn't average 40+ because of talent. They're basically saying that in today's league, the team simply wouldn't allow him to play 41 minutes per game like he did in the past. This mindset kind of shows the weakness in today's game and how many player lack the love of actually being in the NBA. Guys like Iverson, Kobe, Jordan, Tim Duncan and others considered a badge of honor to put in 40 minutes per game and 82 games a season if they were physically able. But today's players are largely pampered and still can't give 35 minutes per game.
    One thing to note, Iverson's 3pt efficiency would go up because he'd be defended far less on the perimeter. Also, in today's NBA, guys are average and even mediocre 3pt shooters but still shoot a ton of threes. If AI played 40 minutes per game and shot 7 threes per game in addition to drives and free throws, he'd easily average 40
