I did this with a 65cm red. I made the mistake of boiling the meat off and it drove the oils into bones making it yellow. I've heard from taxidermist that it's best to use a scalpel to remove all the tissue and skin from the raw skull, soak in 50-60C degree (I was told weeks is needed for snapper as it's such an oily fish) This will allow the tougher flesh/tissues to break down further. At that temperature it won't allow the oil to driven into the bone. Then soak in ammonia to further remove oils and then soak in hydrogen peroxide to whiten the bone. I then use a hot glue gun to piece it together as I can undo any mistakes. Once it's all done I go in with liquid cyanoacrylate glue to make it stronger.
You're right about heat cooking oils in. Makes a big difference. Also even after just rotting the meat off in cool water, degreasing for a few weeks isn't long enough from my experience. Degreasing in acetone alone has taken me a minimum of 6months to get all the grease out for most species with some oilier pelagics take up to 18months. This will go quicker if you cycle between acetone and ammonia (but not heaps quicker). If you do it right, you'll actually see the grease in the bone and watch it slowly leach out of the bone until the bones are almost transparent. The acetone will also go almost the colour of coke it gets that brown. Last tip would be bicarb is a catalyst for super glue. Get ur join right, put glue on, then sprinkle bicarb in and it will set instantly. I'm by no means an expert but those tips have helped me in the past, although I honestly don't mind the fossilised look of the oilier ones. Feel free to message me on Instagram if there's something I haven't covered. Also check out swskeletal for some of the best ones I've seen.
Damnnn whole lotta patience aye, appreciate you sharing that mate definitely some things to try and I’m sure plenty of people will find those tips useful! I did hear about the bi-carb with the glue turning it to something like a plastic almost instantly, only found that one out after debarcles with the glue tho 😂 the Loctite stuff goes off pretty quick though which was good
@@josh.bollen yeah for sure. The loctite is definitely the best stuff but I find I can buy the cheapest stuff out there and it works pretty much just as well with bicarb.
could see this becoming a series where you get all south coat fish
Hahaha damn that would make an epic display
