Camelbak Octane 18 - First Run

- I took the Camelbak Octane 18 out for my run commute this afternoon. This is a 18L running pack with room enough for all my work stuff. There's a large compartment in the back, with a stash pocket for a rain layer. Up front, there's ample storage for soft flasks, phones, gels, and anything else you might need quick access to. And in between, there's room for a laptop or the included 2L hydration bladder with a quick fill lid.
The fit was snug and cozy, and there was room for pretty much everything I need for my winter run commuting.
Disclosures: this is a pack that was sent to me for purpose of review. However, no one is paying me to use the pack or to make this video. No one will have a chance to see my footage before it goes up on RUclips.

I love the montage at the beginning of this review. It perfectly shows how this backpack behaves, how much in bounces during the run etc. Great job! Thanks for the review.
thanks so much for watching!
Massive respect that you do a full disclosure in all your videos.
Great review - was looking for a pack for a multi-day cycling adventure and needed something small but effective; which is tough to find something small that could fit a pair of regular shoes inside. This review definitely sold me on this specific model! Thanks!
Sounds like fun!
That thing is a beast. Looks good, holds a lot of gear, doesn’t have a swoosh. Its all good.
Great review. Well done!!
Haven't been commenting much but I have been watching all the recent vids!
Love the running shots! I live in Socal, 4 years now, but I lived in Chicago all my life and the lakefront path is still my favorite place to run! Thanks for all the great content you put out.
thanks so much for watching! i hope the footage brings back good memories!
The whistle is very important during trail runs. If something happens and you can't move then you can yell "help!" only for couple minutes before you loose your voice, while whistle can be used as long as you can breathe.
i totally get that. this road runner just doesn't have much of a need for it. but i'm glad it's there
Your dog drinking water in the middle of your Camelbak review. 😂
Jimmy johns hit Kofuzi up!! :) Awesome video. Loved the review!! You covered everything, so I thought it is very useful
awesome! i had no idea how to shoot b roll of a backpack, so i was hoping i could do a good enough job demonstrating the size and pockets.
@@kofuzi you did an awesome job. You sold me on it. And I dont need a backpack!!
Forget jimmy johns- the owner shoots elephants for fun
Rodger O my thoughts exactly. Not about it.
@@slodogg ohhhh, I didnt know that. Ok. Changed me mind!
Nice and informative video. Thanks!
Awesome video - Best of luck for Houston :)
Yo, whats going on!! Keep the good reviews coming. Stay healthy kofuzi.
thanks so much Luis!
Looks like a decent, spacious pack. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions
Very nice. I ran that same route when I was in Chicago back in July.
i hope you had a great run!
I dropped $ 150.00 for a Salomon pack and it just never worked right. I then picked up a Camelback Mule for $ 50.00 and have loved it for 2 years. Everything works, it's comfortable, plenty of storage and nothing has broken despite the crash and burn falls on the trails. I am a huge Camelback fan.
i've never had a camelbak before, but i'm impressed here. the overall experience seems thoughtful and comfortable.
Jimmy Johns step up to sponsor this freaky fast runner and great you tuber!!
For a split second I thought you were going to say you fit the sandwiches in the soft flask pockets and was laughing so hard at the idea of that 😂
in retrospect, that's really how i should have carried the sandwiches.
if i ever run an ultra, i'm going to run that way. water in the back. sandwiches up front. i'll be the sandwich runner.
@@kofuzi you jest, but this is the way to go lol
Michael, when your dog was drinking, it sounded like music. I thought that you were starting music in the background and was listening for it to build as you segued into a running montage.
Donald Beck I thought the exact same! It was rhythmic.
Same here
hahahaha! so funny.
the thing is, the dog knows how to drink without making his tags clink the water bowl. sometimes, he just wants attention.
for example, he started barking at 3 am this morning for no real reason, an hour before my usual wake up time
kofuzi I miss the little dog picture blurb that you used to flash whenever your dog makes a noise scratching itself
Great review! :)
@kofuzi any idea when CamelBak Octane 18 will be available to the masses?
CamelBak seems to be making some strides with breaking out of their normal style of packs. I just bought their bike vest, the Chase, which also utilized the front straps for a variety of storage options.
i've got another camelbak review coming. their products have really been impressing
With the weird Chicago weather you may soon want to see if you can fit a snow shovel in the Octane 18.
winter is coming
Great review ..looks bouncy though
Hi Great review, will you be able to fit a triathlon wetsuit in the bag?
TCA is the truth 🙌
i've been enjoying their products for a while. so good. great pricing
@@kofuzi I took your suggestion on the pants and now I own 3 pairs
This bag looks really cool! Perhaps the whistle is for bike riders? Or for safety issues when you’re running in the
I enjoyed this video and got a good laugh too (about Jimmy John’s)
You should do an updated review after you’ve used it for a while.
will do
the whistle is on the mandatory list for ultras
Thanks for the review! I started run commuting with Ultimate Direction Fastpack 15. I've watched your other backpack reviews as well, but can't remember if you've talked about heartrate and running with a pack. Did you notice in the beginning if your HR numbers were higher than usual? I noticed I'm running 20bpm higher even at slow pace and weight of the pack has been 1-4kg.
I usually take things a bit easier when I’ve got a pack on. But weight makes things harder, for sure. I feel it in my feet mostly.
Nice review... I have a old version of Octane 18, when I pack it full and adjust the strap the pack doesn't move at all, I really don't like when the pack jump all over. Yours was moving quite a lot. Is it because of the strap adjustment and it's not really possible to adjust it so it doesn't move at all? thanks
Ok, now I’m hungry...
Notification Gang!
yo!
Hey Kofuzi. We've never seen you on the track or you never mentioned a track workout. For a long time I've been told that track workouts are essential in any distance training.
Are you against the track or you simply didn't mention it for the videos?
Running on track is boring and kind of pointless. I'm into long runs and ultras and on this side of running spectrum it's generally known that you should train in environment that you will be competing in. So if I run street marathons, trail races and ultras there is no point for running on track.
i have never liked track workouts (i'm a slow twitch guy). and many people say track workouts are essential for distance training. but i think it depends on what you mean by "distance"
i'm in the middle of a weird training philosophy journey, and my thoughts are evolving. but i am starting to think that marathoners don't need to run anything shorter than an 800. and at that point, the track is more about convenience and the soft surface.
my chicago 2019 training block included a lot of speed work, including everything from strides of 0.1mi, 400s, and up. much of that could have been done on the track, but we did a lot of it on the road.

Hello, do you have or plan to make a video about how you handle your camera to get those awesome shots while running ? I have a GoPro 8 and was thinking if I could record myself like this for fun and to check my stride
i have this video

but perhaps it needs an update
When you started pulling stuff out i thought you were going for a run with killian jornet? To much stuff for a 10k run commute. Take that stuff to work the day before and leave it there. Tue-thur i run 15k to work and then 38-34 or cervelo tri bike home. I dont carry 1/10 the stuff you have. I didnt like the way your pack bounced around.
What is tue thur, 38-34? Cervelo is a brand of road bike, i know, but in general i not got ur english
I'll eat at Jimmy John's if the sponsor you 😉
this is how it begins!
Have you got an idea of how much you need to slow down when wearing a pack for the same HR/RPE compared to not wearing one?
i don't have that figure. there was also a very nice tailwind
Next 100 miles review will be the Rincon.
true
@@kofuzi Following your channel since 2 weeks ago and thanks so much for what you share! watched at least 50+ of your videos and enjoying them. Also start following you to test out the low heart rate training. Good luck in Houston!
also bought 3 pairs of shoes from your 2019 top 5, carbonX, Adios 4 and Beacon V2.
#JimmyJohns 😎🏆
i ran with my macbook once, and my back hurt the next day. Since you have the bag and the tights for colder weather, why run with shorts on? Seems redundant since you dont need the pockets on the shorts
Some tights leave less to the imagination than others
I run commute to pick to my kids from school and daycare.
What rain coat is that
Kofuzi, can you suggest a good stability shoe for marathon distance. Intermediate runner.
i'm afraid i don't have a lot of experience in a stability shoe. can you run in the kinvara?
@@kofuzi Thanks for the suggestion. Have not tried. Will give it a try. I have run half marathons in Sauconys. They are good.
Funny Jimmy John's comment!😝
Does it fit a 15 inch macbook pro?
Yes
@@kofuzi thanks :) just ordered it
