Hi Fiona Abel-Smith PolyOriginals, Good day to you. This Fantasy Fairy Toadstools in Polymer Clay turned out AWESOME and so BEAUTIFUL. Super Excellent Job! The attention to detail on the toadstools, paint scheme, easy to follow instructions, and your out standing custom sculpt Mushroom House, just blows me away. WOWI just found your channel looking for Polymer Clay. Thank you for sharing your time, talents, ideas, nice tool information, and Super creative Amazing fun videos. Take care, wishing you the very Best, and I hope you have a wonderful creative week. Subscribed, liked, & shared. Peace & Joy :D
You do beautiful work ! Thank you for being so thorough, it is greatly appreciated. And I must say, I could listen to you for hours. Your voice is very relaxing. 😌
I am looking to start making fairy houses and such to leave in my local woods and i want to add fairy toadstools - came across your tutorial - you have such a lovely calm tutorial and really well explained - on of the best You tubes i have seen thank you so much
These are wonderful! Your explanations were detailed and easy to understand. I Plan to take some old tea cups and fill them with floral foam and then put flowers from wool felt that I have made along with mushrooms and other faerie whatnot. I have never worked with clay before but you make it look very doable.
Oh that sounds wonderful Vivian, and I am sure they will look simply stunning when done. And yes, it is definitley doable ;) Just relax into it, have fun, no stress and enjoy what you make :)
Instead of taping it back, you could also trim off the extra bristles if the cheap paintbrush. After all they probably won’t be be much use after being taped up and wrapped back anyways. And if they are cheap, may as well trim them to the size you need.
You could indeed Krista, although the tape does remove quite easily, and I also find, on the ones I have, that there is more flexibility at the taped end, than having cut them down. But of course all brushes are different, and your make probably work much better with your solution :) thanks so much :)
An other great tutorial where you provide wonderful instructions on techniques, information on how to make and use tools and the calm assurance that new skills can be acquired. I especially appreciate all of the tips you give that seem to directly answer questions I have like making small Skinner blends, straightening head pins, and using Kato Polypaste. KUDOS to you, Fiona!
Loved the toadstools, would really enjoy watching you make a Fairy House. When you have some "extra" time of course. You are so talented thanks for sharing your GREAT ideas. 🤗😘
Thanks Bobby, yes I have in mind to do one in a few months time, but I need to do a couple of quick ones again first, as then I can find a bit of time to come up with more stuff ;) :)
You know I always love your videos. This is great as they look so realistic and fantasy at the same time. I love your fairy houses too! I would love to make my Mom one.
Your videos are amazing, you explain everything with a lot of cool tips, straight to the point, which I love in video learning. Keep doing what you are doing!! 🦋💃
I just watched your tutorial on making a little fairy house - it was so gorgeous. I've been watching a lot of your videos and you're an excellent teacher too. I'm learning how to do canes, and I've just bought a second hand pasta machine from eBay for $10.00 and free postage - so I can make skinner blends. Yay! Thank you again Fiona, you're a legend, love from Amanda in Australia xo p.s hope you're staying well during this awful covid19 pandemic.
Oh that's brilliant Amanda, now you can really go to town and have fun with Skinner Blends and canes. I am so happy you are enjoying the tutorials, and hope you have a great time with all you do. Yes, all safe and well here so far, hope you are too :)
I just made these and I LOVE how they came out! They are part of a project, but they might be my favorite part :) I will post on insta when I manage to get it all finished LOL
That's so cute. I'm gonna make some for my herb garden. Thank you for another great tutorial. I love the way you explain things and the way you show us easy ways to achieve awsome results.
They are su pretty! You are awesome teacher! For my fairy garden I made something like yours ( not as pretty as yours) in some of them I use glow in the dark paint and clay, also, I used the end of the bullseye cane for the caps. Thank you so much for your tute! Hugs and kisses from hot Florida!
Thank you Fiona. Followed your link to see how to make the toadstools from your Fairy house tutorial. As always fabulous instruction and techniques. I do see that the one at the end of this video is a more advanced fairy house, it is beautiful. I look forward to your next video and will check back for the Etsy & PolyOriginal sites to see what tutorials you have for sell. =)
Thanks Paul, your ears must have ben burning today, as I have been up at the NEC with the Guild, at the Makers Central show. Full of wood carvers, turners - so I have been telling them all about your polymer turning, and directing them to your videos :)
That is very kind of you Fiona. Hope you had a great day at the NEC. I was hoping to go to the NEC myself, unfortunately work got in the way. All the best, Paul
This is a really great instructive video, and the mushrooms are so sweet.. I'm obsessed with the fairy house you showed the toadstools on at the end. I love the shape and size. Is there any chance you would ever share that design with us? Thanks so much for a lovely time watching and listening.
@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals I've been working my way through your tutorials, and I'm really enjoying them. Of course you are right. All the techniques are either in the other fairy house, or separate videos. I hadn't found them when I commented. :)
When you tent with foil is it ok if the foil touches th pieces? Also can you use parchment instead? I've been using payment for baking my cabachons. Thank you and you are very appreciated!
Hi Tracy, I do normally try and make sure the foil doesn't touch the clay, crackled foil can dent the clay as it bakes, but the flat foil is okay, especially if I know I am going to be sanding the piece later ;) I haven't tried parchment paper in the same way, generally as it would be harder to 'tent', but you can certainly give it a try - but please make sure the paper doesn't touch any of the oven heating filiments, as paper will of course burn, whereas foil doesn't. If you are sure of your oven temperature, you can get away without always tenting in foil. I mention it in these videos, as many people's ovens do spike without them being aware of it, so I err on the side of caution, as I don't want people's clay pieces to burn. I hope that helps a bit :)
Hi Fiona and all subscribers to this wonderful artists channel. Thank you for sharing and for making such clear tutorials. With so many colours and effects of various types of clay available I was wondering, what are peoples must have basic stash colours/effects? Babs
Thanks Babs. In all the brands I use, I use more white than anything else, then black or navy as a contrast. Then I make sure I have a basic colour set, so that I can mix my own colours as I need them. Translucent clay is also very useful, as are the ones that allow mica shift techniques. These are my must haves, not sure about anyone else :)
Fimo professional actually have 'true blue' and true red' colours. For all the other brands, I chose the colours nearest to the pigments you need for printers, yellow, magenta and cyan, then experiment :)
@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals I would love to make one myself! Would definitely be interested in watching if you did! I just got into polymer clay and your videos are so great and easy to follow!
just a few ? about oven time, I know per manufactures instruction. But on the last bake- putting the ring around the head pin- does that take less time or the full time. Than finally do you seal the clay once you finish painting? I heard you can use poly urethane water base sealer, have you done that? Above all else thank you for taking the time to post video's and sharing your expertise.
Hi Rosemary, I personally bake for the same time, no matter how thin a piece I am adding, as I know you cannot really do too long, but you can do too high. So yes, you could get away with baking the small extra ring for about 15 minutes or so, but I am so used to putting my pieces in for about an hour each time, so I simply do that. No, no sealing the clay, neither the clay nor the acrylic paints need sealing. For any advice on sealers, check out the Blue Bottle Tree. Ginger is the best person to go to for any advice on that front : thebluebottletree.com/ I hope all of that helps :)
Not a dumb question, and yes, I absolutely use my own oven. However I always wrap what I am baking in aluminium foil, to protect it should the oven spike in temperature. Ginger Davis Allman of the Blue Bottle Tree has done a lot of research on this, and knows all the chemistry involved, if you would like further reassurance, do read her articles on baking clay on her site, as she is a Polymer Clay Guru, and I trust her findings :) - thebluebottletree.com/?s=safe+to+bake

Does the translucent clay retain its translucent effect after painting?
It would if the paint is also translucent. If the paint is opaque, then no, you will just see the paint. I hope that helps :)
