But the hyperloop was already debunked because of the following two reasons.
1. The cost to build and maintain a constant vaccum in a tube stretching cities would be an order of magnitude more expensive to operate than it would a high speed rail network than spanned the entire United States.
2. Repressurization due to a single fault or general wear and tear would be enough to kill everyone currently in the tube (do people actually know how violent vacuum repressurization is?)
I get that the US failed to build an actual decent passenger rail network, but that doesn't mean you need to jump the shark with this hyperloop nonsense. It's investment bait / snake oil, sorta reminds me of that Simpsons Monorail episode...but somehow more needlessly expensive and dangerous.
He did not say vaccum though. I totally agree, but details matter if we aim to stop this nonsense. How much air can you remove before the pressure makes the tube too dangerous? Is there a middle ground for this vaccum idea? Air density vs speed gain vs tube seal cost?
Not long time ago electric self-driving car was a nonsense too.... but one stubborn dude kept pushing the idea and by learning on own mistakes made extraordinary into reality. Nowadays when other cars manufacturers want similar technology they far behind Tesla with BIG DATA about it. You have to realize that only by building this new loop system we’d be able to get real data about what’s right with it and what needs to be modified. We are talking about learning absolutely new way of “roads”. It gives plenty of food for a thought for investors who live in the age of reusable self-landing ( self-reloading soon) space rockets. I find hard to see such people as charlatans like you see them.
@@vcat417 indeed, for all the high tech wonders we enjoy, there was a period when it was expensive, unwieldy, and unreliable all at the same time. I costs a ton to make an idea practical. But an honest and thorough analysis of the hyperloop, as per Thunderf00t, shows how little you get for moon-shot level efforts. It's not hard to decide that $10 billion is better spent on more sensible endeavors, like regular high-speed rail. I think you'd enjoy Thunderf00t's "high-tech debunking" videos. For real, check out his smack-down on atmospheric water machines!

@@vcat417 Tesla didn't invent the concept of self driving cars... They've been working on them since before Tesla existed as a company. Also, they aren't exactly in the lead, waymo is currently the only company in the US that has vehicles on the road that are completely autonomous / don't require any human attention. Cruise and a couple others a pretty good too. This comment is wild.

They showed it working in the video and literally had 2 people in it smiling with how pleased the experience was. His entire airplane analogy kinda describes your exact fear. Even if it takes 80 more years to perfect its better than continuing down the same path of destruction were currently going down.

And there’s another solution for human contact that takes zero time, is free, has no environmental impact, is boundless and available already .. video meets. hard to compete with that.
Will it go from city to Mars-spaceport? And will it be Tesla Semi-accessible? Maybe via Solar Roadways? Surely this is solar-powered, produces more energy than it consumes, better than the laws of physics AND the safest form of travel since the INSANE NEW Starship 2.0(!)?

I did some rough calculations and ended up at a permanent acceleration&deceleration of 20g. a nuclear warhead doesn't care, I'm not so sure about the human body.

Explosive decompression, anyone? Nah, it'll never build up enough of a vacuum to get more than an inward "puff".
And as the air rushes in at the speed of sound, forcing the pod through the tunnel with explosive speed gasses like a bullet through the chamber of a gun, ultimately firing it into/through the end of the tunnel.
The tunnels are thin, and yet have to support a moving pod, the expansion/contraction of the metals in weather, and possibly the movement of the tectonic plates over fault lines. Even the tank of a gas truck can crumple like a soda can if left out in the hot sun, and then doused with cool water while sealed (the air inside contracts). Mythbusters showed it on camera over a decade ago.
I'm not so sure about the loop, but yes it is a hype.
why pods? i guess i can imagine if the pods were really long, a lot of air could build up at the front and cause significant drag? whatever the reason, this may dramatically reduce how many passengers can be moved. so more likely to be a luxury transportation than a widely used transportation system?

@@bradleymarsh8583 yeah, maybe not a big deal depending on the reasons for small pods. and perhaps other challenges such as safety and loading could make it difficult to have many pods travelling close together.
@@guroux there are no shortage of engineering challenges that's for sure but that's why they have hundreds of engineers working on the same problem and eventually it'll be solved, maybe not soon, maybe not even within the next 10 years but sooner or later problems get solved. Splitting the atom, flying planes, re usable rockets, all these were deemed impossible and now within a century we have all of them.

For some reason, people can't understand the engineering issues behind large vacuum systems. A plane is TINY as a vacuum system in terms of volume and the magnitude of the vacuum. Simply put, it is childishly silly to think it is a viable solution. Period.
it's a hazard to everyone in and around it, but especially to those that sink money into it.
Decompression in a plane can be safely solved with a drop in altitude and gas masks until you get there. Decompression in a vaccum tunnel gives you nowhere to go as your eyes bleed, your blood vapourizes, and your insides try to squeeze out of every orifice. There's one of MANY reasons the hyperloop is dangerous and different from an aeroplane.
I understand the hyperloop won't be a true vacuum, but the more air there is in the tunnel, the less benefit there will be to have a tunnel in the first place. Even without the vacuum, such a tight, thin walled tunnel, that cannot have any air gaps and yet must cope with it's own expansion/contractions in weather fluxuations and tectonic movements over any fault line... it's a ridiculous amount of things to account for - utterly dwarfing the danger of an aeroplane.
Elon and his team have done great things, but there's a reason that MANY scientists are alarmed over the Hyperloop idea. It's an engineer had a thought experiment, but failed to take into account everything outside of the raw physics for it's feasbility. In fact, the hyperloop idea already existed in the 1950s, and it wasn't their level of technology that stopped them pursuing it.
@@challengegravity we've had a literal space station floating around the earth at 30,000 mph for like 20 plus years that has never had any issues with decompression lmfao. A simple hydraulic /suspension system to counter earthquakes (skyscrapers withstand seismic activity no problem) along with periodic hatches and compressed air stored in containers made to flood the device in case of any puncture or leaks solve all those issues

@@bradleymarsh8583 Biofuel isn't all ethanol, and pretty soon we'll have algae-based jet fuels. Given all the preexisting airport infrastructure I think we'll luckily never have to see this disaster of an idea implemented
@@johnsmiff8328 yeah let's continue burning things to get around until the end of time and never try anything new. Let's leave all the cars and airplanes the exact same minus gas. This is the perfect world. Sitting in traffic but it's algae fuel being burnt off while we idle instead so its all good. Batteries are the future and we can't really run from that fact. Hydrogen fuel cells, bio fuel, all forms of energy that aren't renewable should not exist period. The earth doesn't have unlimited resources. It's mandatory we create infrastructure that can sustain us thousands of years into the future. Cars and airports and train stations have remained stagnant since their conception, minus the bullet trains that are actually proving how vital fast ground transportation is vital to building massive economies like China and Japan

I'm not some big simp for cars, I actually have a lot of big issues with American cars-as default infrastructure, some of which I'm sure you share. I think trains are a great idea, and the US should have drastically more commuter rail infrastructure, especially in very urban areas. The problem with very high speed rail is that it's often very expensive to run. It has a role for sure, but not to the extent of China's very high speed rail, which they paid about an order of magnitude more for just for their trains to run a handful of kph faster. Trains are a great idea, but some degree of car infrastructure is simply non-negotiable in rural parts of the US, and you have to be understanding of that if you want to not seem painfully out of touch to 40% of Americans.
I'm want to make sure we have the same understanding of biofuels and hydrogen/oxygen fuel cells. The reason that a biofuel is net carbon neutral is that all of the carbon that it releases into the atmosphere when it combusts was carbon that was initially sequestered from the same atmosphere by a photosynthetic organism. This is distinct from burning traditional combustion fuels because you are not making a net CO2 addition the the atmosphere from a subterranean carbon store, you're effectively borrowing carbon from the atmosphere, there is no net carbon increase.
Maybe you know something I don't about the process of creating hydrogen fuel cells, but the combustion of hydrogen and oxygen will never release CO2, only water vapor. There are logistical problems to solve with hydrogen fuel cells, but the generation of the fuel itself can be done easily with renewable sources, such as solar, to provide energy for the electrolysis of water and subsequent collection of gaseous O2 and H2. The fuel itself is entirely renewable.
It's important to note that batteries have a relatively low energy density. That's why chemical storage of energy will likely remain relevant, like with biofuels. You may not like the idea of combustion for energy, but it's also more equitable for the global south, who are both too poor to buy most of the battery-oriented transportation products you seem to love, and are the ones who are exploited for the rare earth metals that go into electronics-oriented solutions. You're right, we don't have unlimited resources, so it makes more sense to cycle energy in the storage form of biofuels, made of plentiful carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen rather than in batteries.
That all said, vacuum trains like hyperloop have been tried for about a century. Reducing drag at ground level by reducing air pressure in the tube is just impractical. It certainly can't compete economically with air transport. Further, they talked about evacuating enough air from the tube that the pressure in the tube would be roughly that of 20,000 ft in the air. Depressurization of the vehicle in this low pressure environment would result in immediate and potentially permanent injury to the passengers. It's also quite difficult to maintain a leak-free pipeline with even a relatively narrow diameter, as we can see with the constantly leaking natural gas pipelines. A hyperloop is going to waste a lot of energy pumping out air that leaks in.

1. more energy efficient than planes? maybe, dunno. but it uses way more energy than traditional trains.
2. costs ? doesn't seem to matter. you need the precision engineering and security of air or even space travel.
3. cost per passenger? why have a train with >400 people inside when you can have tiny pods with 2 people ...
4. vacuum: that is the main point that will break it's neck, literally. it takes hours to evacuate a decently sized container to the point where the hyperloop should operate at. why vacuum at all? the fastest modern trains can reach over 500km/h (TGV/Shinkansen) and maglev over 600km/h
How much more energy does a maglev train use compared to the envisioned energy cost of a hyperloop? I would think that unless hyperloop is *really significantly* more energy efficient, that it's super dead in the water. If it were *really significantly* more energy efficient, I could see the maintenance costs maybe potentially being worth it for some use cases.
The vacuum point is what gets me..

Maintaining an efficient, and safe VACUUM TUBE measuring 100 plus miles in length, is an untenable pipe dream.. The biosphere project demonstrated our INABILITY to maintain a simple livable atmosphere inside a structure less than one 10, 000th of a percent of this proposal.. Maintaining a colossal VACUUM could be many orders of magnitude more difficult AND dangerous, an observation that many engineers and physicists have pointed out..O Well.. Peace.
Completely agree. Imagine what would happen if the pod/tunnel were to pop a seal and tear? It's a recipe for either a human lack-of pressure cooker, or a train car cannon x'D Maybe both!

Aw man, I'm in Vegas often and would love to see this test area and prototypes. I've been fascinated by Tesla's influence and evolution of ideas ever since I found out about him. I hope I live long enough to ride in one.

I wonder it is true it goes fast but can you survive the G power and stay still for 30min without moving due to the g power?
you only experience G-forces as long as you are accelerating. When you move at a constant speed you do not experience any forces except gravity, think of an airplane

I'm very disappointed indeed that TED ever gave space to promoting this crazy boondoggle. Every competent engineer/scientist I know laughed at it when Musk released this truly ridiculous idea. It's wildly over-complex and appeals to those who don't actually understand how 'technology' actually works in reality as opposed to some fantasy magic sci-fi world. And yet this video was released just as Virgin Hyperloop was planning to lay off half its staff ! The remnants of the company can't last long.
If anyone hadn't noticed, the idea of purely a single destination point-to-point service condemns it to failure alone. There simply aren't enough people who purely want to visit some particulate city highly distant from another single city. Here lies the advantage of the airliner. It can take you literally ANYWHERE it can land and it doesn't need a vacuum tube either ! Railway networks, similarly, can carry passengers to multiple destinations from multiple starting points. They are FLEXIBLE. The hyperloop idea is fundamentally INFLEXIBLE in its concept. And would bankrupt ant business trying to make one. Did NOBODY attempt a costing even ?
Oh and did NO-ONE notice that all those CGI animations showed only a SINGLE tube for TWO WAY traffic. Truly unbelievable. Get some psychiatrists to examine the common sense of people making this kind of delusional nonsense.
This still feels like fast travel for a small number of rich people so they can avoid having to slum it with the rest of us. The problem to be solved isn't how fast we can move a small number of people, it's how many total people we can move through the whole system to different locations. That is a solved problem if we just invest in existing mass transit tech (buses, light rail, high speed rail) and stop investing in ways to make things more convenient for the richest among us.

@@bradleymarsh8583 not exactly. Airplanes weren't vaporware because the idea was based on sound principles. Hyperloop is not based on sound principles. The pod in a vacuum tube was envisioned a century ago. The reason we went with trains and subways in stead is because they're actually feasible.

Even if it takes another 100 years for it to come to fruition, doing the same thing we are currently doing just isn't sustainable and we're reeling from the effects already.

The problem will be getting the land, the permits, the sound proof, where the power comes from, where do we put the stations and what stations are needed (cuz if NY to LA has 27 stops it really slows down everything) and everything in between to get it done.

sounds cool for some places in the world that are overpopulated and warm, however where I live in Toronto they have a hard time building monorail systems especially in the winter. as for climate... i still dont know why people cant accept that the world oil will run out in 2050 anyway so were clearly going to use it till its done and see where were at with the climate then.
