You're a lucky boy then. Two of 70's bikes I'd love to ride/own. I could smell the 2smoker from here every time you mentioned it. Beautiful bikes and scenery.
Story goes. An agitated Italian bike rider failed to start his Harley Davidson. He got so aggravated that he kicked his bike and the result was, the motorblock shifted and turned 90° in the frame. Hence, the birth of a Moto Guzzi.
First time I rode on a KZ1000 I was 14 years old and my older brother's friend had one, he took me for a ride, I never felt acceleration like that, my eyes were tearing so bad, I nearly flew off the back of the bike. I'll always remember how fast that bike was.
The Kawasaki may have "positive neutral finder". Kawasaki's attempt to help you find neutral at a stop. It prevented you from going to second gear by mistake when upshifting from first to neutral.
Kawasaki Z1-Z1000 series was "king of the hill" in the 70's for a good reason. I was a teenager on a Honda CB 175 later a Yamaha RD 250. A "Z" was beyond my reach and when I saw Mad Max I ached for one.
Nice to see 70's Japanese bikes on the channel. That was the decade my motorcycling adventures began. I had a s/h GT250 k series and later a brand new Z1000 amongst others. Thanks for taking me down nostalgia road Mike and Geoff.
Fourty and fifty year old bikes.... it was only yesterday..... my god I got old quick.... just payed £9.30 for a (UK sized) gallon.... it was only 50p back when I started riding.....
I had my first kwaka z1000a for 20yrs and now ive started buiding one from a rolling chassis and the final product should be a madmax toecutters black z1000a with full fairing and custom seat
In 1985... I found a nice '78 KZ 1000 and rode it all over North Lake Tahoe when I lived across the street from the Cal-Neva at Crystal Bay. It's a straight ahead wheelie bike (way, way back in the day...) Curves? Nah. Anyway, glad you did this one Mike. Great job as always.
That ' Kettle ' reminds me so much of riding with a good friend in Taupo NZ , he had a brand new RD350 Yamaha back then and this thing on song beat the pant's off my 750 Commando in a straight line , cornering ,, well ? But as you say the smell of a 2 stroke is sweet ,
Many thanks Brian! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I really enjoyed this ride on the vintage Japanese bikes. It was a lot of fun. I loved riding the KZ and hopefully will get to ride the Suzuki in the future. Best wishes, Mike
Oh yes, they might be over 40 years old but still perform brilliantly. My first ‘Superbike’ experience, as a teenager, was riding a friends ‘72 Suzuki GT750 (TLS front brake). I caught the bug and as you know, there is no cure for it 😉. You are blessed to live in such a lovely part of the world. Great video, keep ‘em coming……🏴
Hi, my friend Wow! It's a motorcycle trip video that gives people healing and energy The riding course is especially beautiful Have a comfortable day 👍👍👍
Hello Mike, enjoyed this video bought back some memories. I had a GT750 kettle back in 1976 bought new on H.P. at the age of 19.My first long journey out of the UK was to the 24 hour at Le Mans. I later had a Z1B 900 prior to the Z1000 as you know same in line 4 cylinder. Had the Z1 for 27 years. Without checking from memory for around £1,000 to £1,300.00 you could get one of these Superbikes or a T140 (I like T140's) however as you say these Japanese imports were a revelation back then for all the reasons you mention in the video. Happy days ATB 👍
In 1970 when I was at Cal I bought my first bike a late 60s Suzukl 350 two stroke of course. Was it fast. A real widow maker! Fond memories of that bike. Great video! Looking forward to the next one.
Among MANY other bikes, I had a Kawasaki 1000 four cylinder and a Suzuki water cooled 750 that I rode from California to Texas to Massachusetts back to Texas when in the army. Both were great bikes but prefer the current Moto Guzzis in my garage--mike
Nice bikes & thanks for posting your ride, If funny,I also have a 78 kz1000 B2 LTD & a Kawi H1 500 triple that me a friend of mine take out on nice country rides in upstate NY in very similar cond your riding in. Happy motoring! Scott from ny!
If you love the smell of smoke, you would have loved riding with me back in the day, following me on my 1964 Yamaha YDS3 250. (There was something wrong with my bike, causing it to smoke even more than a typical 2-stroke. I got pulled over by a cop for excessive smoke!).
I always wanted a 750 "KETTLE" when they first appeared in the UK. I was an apprentice turner at the time , so on very poor wages. Both wonderful bike there.
Thanks for posting. My 72 CB750 that I got for for $150.00 still provides a smooth ride. It keeps the 71 BSA Lightning and H-D Sportster company in the garage. True international flavor. Switching between the BSA and the other bikes requires some concentration as the rear brake and shifter are on opposite sides.
Very enjoyable - Having owned both the later GT750A and the Z1B would have to say the Suzuki is a far better touring bike and deceptively fast. We call them waterbottles here in Australia.
Thanks a lot Ian, glad you enjoyed the video. Hopefully I’ll get to ride the water bottle again in the future! Will be sure to take my camera. Best wishes, Mike
Thank you for making this ride so relaxing for me! Below zero wind chills here in the midwest so I must wait a couple more months to take the GT550 triple out for a spin. I noticed at the beginning of this video it appears the exhaust connectors are not in place on the GT750. I'm guessing it was in for servicing or something like that. Cheers!
@@TheMightyGarage I'm curious if you or Geoff know why someone would choose to blank them off. It didn't seem to negatively affect the bike as I watched Geoff riding.
A great 'ride out' in between breakfast & coffee along with sunshine through my window this early July sunday morning. Thanks to Geoff for leading us on this country road trip, the bikes sound & performance outstanding, just that extra gear needed Mike .... 😉 .. 😂 .. 👍 .. 🏍 atvb t ..
Loving this Mike the soundtrack of my youth. Rode a z650 around Oz two up, could use a little fuel tho. Mate had a gold Suzie 750, we called them waterbottles. Cheers mate.
Hi mighty garage Love your RUclips videos on Sunday morning in the uk . Gt 750 , Z 1000 , just need a Honda cb 750 the rat pack ! . You just have to love the bikes of the 70s ,very nice .
Hello Mike!!! I had a Suzuki GT 750 back in 1983!!! Had a better fairing and saddle bags was a smooth fast bike and fun to ride!!!! Had 20 motorcycles since then!!!!! As always like your videos!!!! Take Care from BIG D CYCLE AREA N,TEXAS!!!!!
Cracking ride out Mike , I've said it before , you have some great roads out there in Oregon , I like going on google maps and finding where you've been as the video is playing . That Kawasaki looks like it needs a smaller cog on the back maybe . Once I was riding up the A6 to Market Harborough Leicestershire and a group of GT750 owners were pulling out of a layby , there was maybe 8 or 10 of them , the smell , that smell , wonderful , I think they call themselves the kettle club , good ones fetch some real money these days . Nice Video Mike , looking forward to the manxman Vids .
Hey,Mike, nice video again, and this time with the mighty K Z 1000…. It looks as if you have ridden much faster than the other times… well, it’s a Z1000…. Thanks for sharing this nice tour with us; I liked it very much! Greetings from sunny northern Germany ( and just back from a short tour around Lübeck) Manfred
Love it, Mike! Great bikes, great ride. Not sure how awkward or difficult it would be for you, but would love to see footage of you guys having your coffee (and/or lunch) and talking about the bikes, your ride, etc. Cheers! 👍☕🏍
I love the seventies bikes. Not much in the way of British machines, but some wonderful bikes, especially the two-strokes. I have very fond memories of my RD 350. Perhaps there's a spot in your life for a seventies stroker or a big Japanese four, before they became the UJM. One of our local bike stores has a Z 1000 for sale and man, is that a physically huge bike. Quite intimidating.
My mate had 3 750 kettles, all in the front room of his flat, all but one running a beautiful blue with a 3 into 1 pipe, it sounded awesome! I had a Kawasaki KH250 triple, no comparison 😂 Nice start to the day, a brew and some great memories 🏍 Good news on the Manxman, can’t wait to hear what you’ve achieved 👍 Have great week Mike ☕️🥧
Great video, boy them bikes took me back to my yoof. You mentioned a paint colour 'Pacific Blue' which was the colour of a Suzuki GT 380 I bought new in '76 maybe that's the same colour? Keep up the great work Mike. If the weather bucks up here I'm inspired to get my Speedy out and maybe get up t'Lakes. Take care.
Was waiting for the swap over to the Suzuki 🙁 wish you would just lower the camera angle to get a view along the tank, clocks and bars to give us a sense you are actually on a classic bike.

Tenerife? So the Eddie Lawson replica you mentioned is the one that Freddie Dobbs rode, I guess. Fantastic, and rare, bike! Congrats man. All the best from Brazil. ✌
Did you smell it was Castrol? I heard (don't know if it is true or not) that the blue smoke makes your blood pressure and sugar levels lower and relieve even arthritis! Anyhow, Great Ride, Thanks!
The twostrokes where great bikes but not stable in the corners as many japanese bikes in the 70s. Bmw had less horsepower but had better frame and brakes.
The bikes of the early 1970s had great style and variations. I just rehashed a Cycle Guide Superbike show down from 1972, fifty years ago. They had seven models: Suzuki GT 750, Kawasaki 750 H2, Yamaha TX 750, Honda CB 750, Norton 750, Trident 750 and Harley Sportster 1000. It was nice to reread it after 50 years. A link if you are interested. ruclips.net/video/Tf0AHXNdrxA/видео.html
It was CYCLE magazine. They did two of the Superbike comparisons, one 350 comparison, and a 250 enduro comparison. The very best magazine of its era. 👍
A walkround the two bikes with the owner pointing out any mods and foibles would've been good, the Zs 4-1 exhaust (std jetting?) and twin discs on a US spec, has he lowered the gearing? Which oil manufacturer is he running on the GT, is it castor or just smells like it? I thought that pink met. paint job was first year only yet it doesn't have the 4 leading shoe drum brake that classic racers used to covet? etc. Where is that 360○ camera? Could've been a worthwhile addition to the ride-a-long.
kinda (?) work it into the corners??? those k'saki1015's were sluggish handlers, the 998's were much better. I'd almost prefer riding that lawnmower I saw in the garage. Anything over 400lbs takes a whole new line through a corner !! Plan well ahead !!
Im a Harley Davidson man but i absolutely love the 70s japanese classics. I got myself a 1978 CB550 four a few years ago. Love that little bike.
The Water Buffalo, kind of an odd-ball bike even back in the early/mid 70's.
This is when bikes looked loke bikes best era ever
You're a lucky boy then. Two of 70's bikes I'd love to ride/own. I could smell the 2smoker from here every time you mentioned it. Beautiful bikes and scenery.
Great video. Back in '78 i had the kettle's little baby brother. A GT 250m Ram Air. Loved that bike !!
I love the smell of two cycle engines at any time of day or night.
Lovely bikes.
Story goes. An agitated Italian bike rider failed to start his Harley Davidson. He got so aggravated that he kicked his bike and the result was, the motorblock shifted and turned 90° in the frame. Hence, the birth of a Moto Guzzi.
