There was an episode of mysteries at the museum that went into the jackalope history, that it's actually based on real science that there is a certain kind of fungus that hardens into like a horn shape on top of rabbit's heads. They managed to find a horn fragment grind it up use water to make a paste and put it on the top of another rabbit's head and sure enough it grew.

There's also a rabbit papilloma virus that causes horn-like tumors to grow from the rabbit's face and head that some believe also explain the jackalope sightings.

0:19 cross between a hare and an antelope. Antelopes r native to Africa and parts of Asia. Some scientist thorize that rabbits with a form of leporid disease that causes abnormal bone growth is responsible for the stories.

Pronghorn are colloquially called antelope so that might explain it. Although IDK if it's always been the case.

Ah yes the might Jackalope . Friend to all jumping sheep
(To those who don’t get the reference it’s from the Pixar short called Boundin where a Jackalope gives encouragement to a jumping sheep who was feeling down after being shaved.)
