    I worked on this ship as a stew off and on for about two years back in the early 90’s. I was always proud of how she looked when in port compared to other boats. The World Discoverer was considered an expedition ship meaning we never repeated the same itinerary and were always somewhere new each season. We sailed for 4 months in Alaska, then made a 13-day crossing to Costa Rica, through the Panana Canal, up the Amazon for around 6 weeks, Brazil all the way to Antarctica. It was a defining moment of my life. It’s completely surreal to see my floating home and my actual porthole of my crew cabin submerged. The stern-where the crew hung-out, drank and played music and sang. I know that boat (and cleaned every inch of it!) like the back of my hand. Truly bizarre. So thankful for the experience and my adventurous young self. so glad no one was hurt during this accident.

You can get drunk, take hallucinogenics, have sex whenever you want and gamble all your money away. My company is going bankrupt but that's because my accountant has run off with my wife! She was a very strict woman, she never let me do anything! I had to do as I was told all the time! Such a shame my accountant stole her off me lol!

    I worked for Society Expeditions for several years, up until 2001 a year after the World Discoverer hit the reef and sank. I was called in for emergency planning on the night the vessel hit the reef and was involved in many aspects of evacuation, travel and recovery in the year after.
    I was in Operations and Sales at different times. The World Discoverer was a true Expedition ship with First Class features, an amazing staff and unique and adventurous itineraries. She had a loyal following.
    The vessel owner did attempt to clean the wreckage up, but was impeded by armed locals. After the area was stabilized a further attempt was made, but there was no way to remove without causing damage to nearby reefs. Full consideration was taken for safety and nature.
    Grrat video! Thank you so much...!!!

    I would love to see a detailed video of what happened to Crystal's Spaghetti & Pizza. It was a large old world new Orleans styled restaurant. Like a cabaret feel. Also it had movie theater inside, pianist playing live music, that played old times cartoons and elaborate libraries, fish tanks everywhere. The freaking tables were fish tanks!!! It was a beautiful and unique restaurant chain for several decades. Honestly even though the last of the stores here in Texas wasn't too great looking by the end their pizza and food really tasted quite good! The old style theater and dark low lit environment was mysterious.. Like a haunted mansion. Oh and the amazing frosted glass windows all over with the woman's image emblazoned on to them, I always assumed it was supposed to be Crystal, lol. And of course the spectacular marquee sign outside was fun to watch. I mean for a buffet family restaurant and arcade the place was absolutely incredible. It put Chuck E cheese to shame.

So they should never complain because every single one of the islanders salvaged (it is still called salvaging even if you don't own it) the ship not one islander didn't, all the Grannies they were the first to jump on you know how it is always wanting to outdo there friends as you know

    • @Alex-cw3rz
      @Alex-cw3rz 5 лет назад +9

      @@voidofspaceandtime4684 this argumentation makes no sense, your for one are moving the goal posts, also this kind of thinking is just moronic, this is just like in North Korea where the whole family is put in prison for the crimes of one person. Firstly it took years upon years in fact it's almost been there for 2 decades for it to get stripped, so no your wrong it wasn't a big operation as it wasn't an operation in the first place, secondly the Solomon islands are a group of 900 islands, so if you are disingenuous enough to claim that the only people salvaging the ship where all local or the only people who want it to be gone are local, you are totally naive. Next why would someone involved in salvage want a huge amount of metal and bolts to be taken away, that is millions to be made from the scrap it's self, unless you are just speculating without thinking about what you are saying. You are also acting in bad faith as if this is a unique thing that salvaging has occurred, I cannot think of any coastal wreck ever, that has ever not been salvaged from.

      - "Firstly it took years upon years in fact it's almost been there for 2 decades for it to get stripped"
      lol Ive seen time lapse video footage of large groups of locals in other 3rd world countries completely dismantle a large cargo airplane (among other things) in a little over a day. Do you seriously think that it was just a few people over the span of 20 years that slowly removed one thing per day from the ship? Thats not how these typs of salvage ops work.
      - "secondly the Solomon islands are a group of 900 islands, so if you are disingenuous enough to claim that the only people salvaging the ship where all local or the only people who want it to be gone are local, you are totally naive."
      Its quite clear that the locals are the ones who stripped it AND want it gone. What are you talking about? Where has it ever been suggested that it was anybody BUT locals?

    Love every episode of this series, and I personally think the variety is awesome. You've got your videos about circuit city and blockbuster that track the decline and eventual downfall of huge companies, you got your classic disney videos that chart past and future developments and such, and then you have awesome things like this that you never knew about before!
    Anyway, keep up the good work man!

Unfortunately I've got no more friends to cruise with and going with my family's too expensive, so right now I don't see a chance to go on another ship as big as the Independence or as small as the Discoverer.
