    Nicely done M. Moto.
    My 06 needs to be done and on my project list (62k mi).
    One trick for fork leaks is to first try cleaning the area between the seal and the fork tube (often dirt can be causing the seal not to seal) using a piece of thin plastic (35mm film or lettuce/veggie container). I tried cleaning the Strom, no joy so clearly worn. However I tried this with some of that lettuce container plastic that I fashioned into a 1/4 by 4" piece and managed to clean the leaking seals on my Super Tenere - stopped leaking.
    The booties are an excellent preventative as you point out.

    New to riding and got my first bike 5 days ago. '04 DL650. What benefit does the progressive spring have over stock? Perfect video btw. I have a leaking fork seal and this video is exactly what I need. any recommendations for seals, oil?

    • @mainstreammoto4856
      @mainstreammoto4856  3 года назад +1

      This is just my experience. The stock suspension has a reputation of being soft and its great for the long hwy miles and zipping around town. However when you get into the twisty roads, you can feel the nose dive down through the corner. The progressive suspension made it feel more planted through the corners. Off road it helps with bottoming out the forks and has made it feel less bouncy. I tend to get more feedback through the bars. Some people like that, some people don't. That's just what I've noticed.
      I've have only used Suzuki seals and Pro Honda Suspension Fluid SS-8 10W for my bike. Have never had a seal go bad on my V-Strom!
      Congratulations on the new bike!!!

      Because of the play in the fork shown at 14:58, you want the fork to find its natural resting place. If the fork is tweaked one way or the other it will cause binding when compressed. Working the shock before clamping down the pinch bolt solves this problem.

    • @mainstreammoto4856
      @mainstreammoto4856  5 лет назад +3

      I don't believe that all of the oil can be removed from the fork without taking it apart. Oil will get stuck around the bottom-out cone and when tipping it upside down oil will get stuck between the stanchion and the fork lower. It wont be much oil tho. The forks can get kinda nasty inside over time as well so taking it completely apart and giving it a good cleaning has it's benefits. Your choice! Here's something to check to help with your decision...look at the color of the fork oil when you dump it out. If it's gray, then the seals are bad and should be replaced. (Gray color is a sign that water has gotten in past the seal.) If it's more of a black (like normal looking used oil) then the seals are probably fine. Then go from there with what you want to do. Hope this helps! Let me know if I can help with anything else!
