  • With Israeli elections less than two months away, polls are showing that the Religious Zionist party, a coalition of religious ultra-nationalists and followers of the late, racist Rabbi Meir Kahane, could win as many as 13 seats, making it an indomitable political force. After a summer hiatus, For Heaven's Sake is back with Donniel Hartman, Yossi Klein Halevi, and Elana Stein Hain to ask about the causes of this unprecedented rise in religious fanaticism in Israel?

Why should I accept modernity/liberalism as you call it when that ideology wants to utterly destroy Torah values? We didn’t make it this far by conforming the Torah to the flavor of the day.

TO THE THREE PANELISTS: Rabbi Kahane's and Ben Gvir's "theological racism" as you, as "modern" orthodox Jews would label it, comes straight from the Torah. If the holiness of the Land is alien to modern discourse, then the fault lies with modern discourse and not with Torah-True Orthodox Judaism. If those, like Ben Gvir, don't agree with your definition of the holiness of the Land as nothing more than theological racism, then it is not they who have revolted but those who profess this "modern" distortion of Torah. The "modern" discourse you value so highly as to claim that it supersedes Torah is only a part of passing time. In other words, it comes, and it goes much like "modern" discourse in the 15th century. The Torah, however, is beyond time and not invalidated by your "modern" thoughts or any such thing as "modern orthodoxy". The fact that I feel the need to point out to you three this reality (The reality that Rabbi Kahane understood, and Ben Gvir understands), makes me feel like I'm speaking to children. Do I have to remind you that Israel is a Nation apart and not like the other nations or that this Land is not like any other land? To attempt to make your Judaism easier and more palatable to secular understanding is not "modern" at all. It is something that has been tried without success countless times in Jewish history. You may consider this comment a call for you to do Teshuva and accept the fact this election was not a step back to the "dark ages" but a necessary step in promoting Torah True values which can only strengthen Am Yisrael. Shalom.

My comment at 8:53...Please read my comment on the web page", WHO WAS BARUCH GOLDSTEIN"? (History of Israel Explained - (November 28, 2019) on You Tube. There, I have reproduced the article, "To Our People of Israel" by The Committee and Friends of Dr. Baruch Goldstein. Honestly reviewing this article might help to soften what I feel is an undeserved legacy of that Purim incident in Hevron and the slander of Dr. Goldstein which still goes on today.

This situation makes the framers on the US constitution and bill of rights look even more genius. This is exactly why you need a clear separation of church and state.
