I grew up with plastic HO scale trains but was fascinated by picture books of old tinplate stuff from the early 20th century. Bing and Ives were the primordial ur-toys in those narratives.

You sir are going to develop a "reputation" for taking on some of the most challenging of rebuilds and restorations. I will be following along in earnest to see how this progresses. Good luck and Cheers

That is grogeous, a real classic toy, and like all the Bing products, well made and an excellent colour match at the time.

I repaired an old 1950's Triang 0-6-0 clockwork mechanism a few years ago. A heck of a lot smaller so more fiddly plus I had the exploded view servicing diagram to guide me as to what went where.
It has forward, neutral and reverse gear settings. Later 1960's to 2010's Triang (now rebranded Hornby) 0-4-0 clockwork mechs aren't so sophisticated.

A great many years ago a friend gave me a large wind-up engine similar to this one to try and fix. It had been in a house fire and unfortunately I could never repair the mechanical bits, but did make it look presentable. It had a coal tender, and one passenger car, which was in excellent condition. I think it was a #3 gauge as well as the driving wheels were a little over two inches apart. All the brass and white metal parts on the right hand side had welded themselves together, so the owner used to display just the left hand side. He had no idea how or when his father had received it and we never knew for sure just who made it or when. It was a nice looking model none the less.

Very interesting. I'm looking forward to watching future episodes to see how you overcome some of the issues with these older toys, especially plating that is falling off the base metal and badly stained paint. As well as the mechanical bits, of course! It's great you are tackling this type of project Keith, variety is the spice of life (IGJH).

I don't mind the cracking and flaking paint, it's all part of the ageing process - a bit like me really }:-)))

The melamine counter top certainly works well for the video. If your having difficulty maintained that material, we have had good luck with quartz and also commercial grade stainless steel

Not all the Hornby "0" gauge wheels are affected by the wheels cracking. It's pot luck really and generally only affects prewar wheels, buffers, Hornby Dublo and Dinky Toys. The alloy, mazac, has to be over 97% correct (if I remember correctly) otherwise it will, at the very least crack, and in some cases just turn to dust. There were found impurities in the mazac, caused by the workers throwing other things into the furnace at Meccano's factory in Binns Road, Liverpool, such as the wire ties around sacks.

I wonder how many of our modern toys will still work when they are as old as this.

White spirit is a "paint thinner" commonly used for cleaning paint brushes, so why doesn't it attack or soften the precious antique paintwork?
Wouldn't isopropyl-alcohol be a safer cleaning fluid for the paintwork?
(I'm asking because I also have an antique Bing Train* in need of restoration.)
*yes, it does have carriages :-)

White spirit doesn't seem to harm old paint.

Hi, Keith! This was a very informative video. I am not a train enthusiast, but I listened to this entire playlist because it was so fascinating. I do have a question though, and I hope you will be able to help me. I have a 1953 Winnie the walking and talking Windup doll by advanced toy company. I am having trouble getting her going. I don’t believe the spring is broken because she will wind perfectly and there is tension in the key the further you wind it, but she does not proceed forward or do anything. If I very carefully move the key in the reverse direction she will perform if I continuously move the key. Could you please tell me what is going on? She is very dirty on the inside there is oil and dust together on the parts of her mechanism that I can see. Unfortunately, I don’t believe I can remove it from her body so I am stuck. What do you suggest? And thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

I would suspect a broken mainspring. Or maybe the parts are stuck with old grease?

@@keithappleton oh! Thank you! Well, now comes the next problem. Lol! Where to get a spring like that. It’s a very weird looking spring. It’s flat and it looks like a metal reel. I don’t know. Imagine real to reel tape, but only one wheel of it and made of metal.

II have a facsimile copy of the 1906 Bing catalogue and this model loco appears to be cat. no. 17592/3 gauge 3 -v 2-5/8 gauge 24 in long. It cost 79/8 in old money for the loco & 12/- for the tender. Big money in this days!
