I wish I could remember what the product was but I used a spray on a small potbellied stove my Grandmother had given me. Initially the black was very dull and the paint very faded. After spraying it the black went to very black and the gold paint brightened up tremendously. I was shocked what a difference it made. That was 15 years ago and it still looks as good as the day I sprayed it. Perhaps one of your viewers might have a clue what it may have been. I remember it was made just for the purpose I used it for. I think you did a great job on the pin striping. Mr Pete would be proud.
I just Goggled vintage Victor safes and clicked on images and found a bunch of old Victor safes and there were several photos of you at various stages of your safe restoration. I thought that was kinda neat. Turned out very nice.
Beautiful job of pin striping. When you laid out that magnetic guide I did not recognize that it was rubber at first and I though the camera was distorting things. Then my brain worked again some and I realized it was flexible. That safe will be a work of art when you get it finished. Thanks for the video.
Keith, I have followed your project since the start; you have done a great job. I wish I had half your skills and all your tools! I restored my grandpa's safe and really enjoyed the project. I too left the inside mostly original.

Looks Awesome!!! The pin striping is a home run. I think a clear coat may brighten up the old door inside the safe. Wipe it with some mineral spirits. If you like how it looks then that is about how it would look with a clear on it. I would likely restore the interior if it were mine. Of course you do what makes you happy. At first for whatever reason I did not have a big interest in the safe project. But after watching it I found that you are just like Walter Cronkite! He could get me interested in a news story that I could care less about by just listening to his voice. I was waiting for you to say "and that's the way it was May 14th 2015" . LOL You mentioned that the safe would be a family heirloom. Never going to happen Keith. Somebody will have it when they pass on to the big machine shop in the sky and the rumors will start. "they had a fortune in gold coins and jewels" etc etc. Sadly it will end up like you found it with the dial knocked off and a hole in the bottom. If I were you I would put the combination on a sticker and put it on the side so people can see it. Your skills are amazing and you should be very proud of your work. As always thanks for your time and effort.
I am into to custom paint/hotrodding type stuff, and I know a few pin strippers. One of the saying they use often is, if you want it perfect, buy a sticker! The minor imperfections are great, they signify that it was hand painted. Looks great Keith!

Very nice Keith. As I mentioned weeks ago, the magnetic strip is well worth the cost for someone who doesn't do it everyday. I've been using one for awhile and it get's easier to use once you've seen the results a few times. I pinstripped my P/U as well as the front door trim on my house. It's an awesome tool
Keith, I'm glad to see you liked the stripe tool and guide I suggested awhile back. The safe looks great. Be careful when you clear coat the safe because some clears have very aggressive solvents in them and can cause lifting or wrinkling of the base coat especially spray can type paints. I would test somewhere that couldn't be seen before applying the clear overall. Anyhow, great job with the safe and I am anxious to see the finished product! Jamie

it would come in very handy for that . i was at the hospital today got by new shoes for my crooked feet arthritis twisted them out of shape been painting most of the day . like how the magnetic guide works i used to pin stripe but i used to use pin striping tape its a very fine vinyl tape comes in all shapes sizes and color

just use some 3m buffing compound and a high quality clear on the small door. if you don't want to spend a ton on clear they make a 2k clear in a rattle can that you activate the hardener in. works great also. i love how this restoration is going. I'm about to graduate from paint and body school in savannah and want to do some small restoration projects.
Excellent piece. If you take your screws and put them in fire then drop them in used motor oil (lots of carbon) they will become black. Just be sure to put them back in fire after that and let them cool off slowly otherwise they will become brittle.
I know this is an old video, but just a heads up, I've seen a few pinstripe artists use Beuglers to pinstripe elaborate jobs. While a sword brush offers more control as far as line thickness goes, you can still taper your lines and do curves pretty easily. the key to striping is being able to "steer" the brush or tool to make nice curves. The challenge with the sword is controlling brush pressure and keeping your hand or arm away from your lines. if you have shaky hands or arthritis the sword brush can be a challenge. A Beugler has it's own challenges; the line thickness is limited by it's wheel size, the tool is bulky, which makes it less sensitive to pressure, but more challenging to steer. It holds more paint than a brush, so pulling a long line down the length of a car is easy, with a brush, you need to reload and palate it a few times along the way. a Beugler can also pull multiple lines of varying thickness at once. With a Beugler, you can start the wheel on it's edge and "roll in" to the flat to get the line to taper in/taper out. With practice, you can stripe pretty well with them. While I usually use Mack swords to stripe, there's room for a Beugler in my kit; Rarely use it though because of all the cleaning involved. Practice with it; You will eventually free hand everything once you get the feel for it.
With regards with what do do with the interior, might I suggest leaving the little lock box in original condition and restoring the remainder. In that way the contrast will really show off (to those who see the inside of your safe) the time and skill you put into the restoration.
eastwood has a 2k clear coat. you want something that is catalyzed, anything off the shelf at lowes or home depot just don't harden enough to be durable. a 2k clear is basically automotive clear coat so it cures solid. by the looks of it you're pretty good with a rattle can so this would be just like that. just do about 3 light coats. if you want to protect the exterior of the safe i would recommend it there too. its not the cheapest but its a good bang for your buck. and its got a uv protectant so the color won't fade over time. if you have any other questions this is right up my alley and would love to help in any way possible.

Two questions, 1) The outside paint of the safe seemed to appear a little flatter and the doors more glossy. Was that on purpose or was it the light in the shop? 2) I'm sure you mentioned it in one of the earlier episodes, but I was waiting for you to mention the staining on the floor of the safe and what caused it and are you going to leave it that way or not. I'm surprised they don't sell a rigid guide magnet. Maybe you could improvise one, from a length of aluminium tracking and a roll of self adhesive magnetic tape?

I just acquired a safe similar to yours, same body but has no inside door and outside door has a separate dial from door nob. everything is in good shape but paint is all but gone some rust to be sanded down. what do these safes go for after being restored but having needed a complete paint job. I assume it must degrade the safe. I got it for $10 bucks but they'are so awesome looking when restored i have to do it even if i end up selling it.
Just was curious if you used enamel or lacquer and what the top coat would be? I have not had very good luck with clear top coats and was wondering what I was doing wrong?

***** You have to put "Rucker's General Store" on the front. Many old safes had the owner's name painted on them.

you did better than my first attempts at the tool , but then i was doing a very round motorcycle tank, a bit ambitious! worked out ok though

When your cleaning errors use isopropyl alcohol, clean wipes with zero streaking!
