Finally. This is the video I've been looking for Mr Hodges. I have an '81 evinrude that won't shift right after and I've looked everywhere trying to find out how to fix it. I couldn't justify spending the money to take it to a boat mechanic with their insanely high repair costs. PS Love the accent. I'm from Alabama but it's still kinda rare to hear one so thick as yours around here.
Thank you for the simple explanation, everybody confuses people by making it more complicated then it is to sound smart..you took this and made it easy to understand, much appreciated thank you.
Cool video. You covered issues I believe are the cause of more gear engagement problems people have with their outboards than the clutch dogs being worn. I'd be willing to bet that excessive play you show on the shift rod head and the bent pin and worn spring cams are the issues causing the dogs to round the edges. Fix those first and the repair costs drastically fall to affordable and worth doing.
awesome video!......you crack me up when you first start talking , you sound like u flunked out of 5th grade,,,,but as you talk , you can see how truly intelligent you are ,, and how much information you have to explain in a very clear, methodical way , that truly helps people understand how something works,,,,,great job ,, keep up the videos
i guess you didnt read my comment completely ,, thats is what is ignorant,, go back to grammar school , i bet you didnt do well in reading and comprehension!
bent rodguy yes I did read your ignorant comment completely. Doesn’t stop me from thinking your ignorant for sayin people with southern accents are stupid some how. IGNORANT!! You should maybe check your spelling and proper English before saying someone else flunked school hahahahaha.
if you were smart enough you could clearly see the whole point of what i said ,, and with a joking overtone about his accent ,, to people intelligent enough to get it , clearly pointed out how brilliant his explanation was ,, just a pathetic undeducated yankee punk would make the comments you do clearly!
Thanks Danny!! Extremely good info. Of all the videos that I've watched on this subject, yours is the only one that I've seen to mention the pin and other parts as being possible problems. I'll be checking mine either today or tomorrow. I hope that my problem is as simple and inexpensive as yours!
Danny S Hodges, thanks for the explanation of how all this works. After seeing your video, I know exactly what needs to be done to repair my "reverse" issues. Leave it to a good ol boy to show everyone how it's done. Roll Tide!
Danny S Hodges I forgot to let you know that mine DID turn out to be an inexpensive fix. After stripping it down to the gears, which looked perfect, and putting it back together and adjusting the cables, it ran great. Thanks.
excellent explanation and Good visual pic's. .I am stripping an old unit which is a non runner for practice and a better understanding ..your site is a great help..many thanks
Watched your water pump video also. thanks for that too. Doing my own water pump impeller and noticed the previous guy didn't replace the roll pin he had knocked out on the shift linkage and there was only a half of a cotter key thru it bent allowing slack . I found the old roll pin in the lower unit where it had been lost. Expecting to see a difference on the same situation you have. Mine is weird about shifting, never jumps out of gear, but sometimes doesn't wanna go in. Thanks for the videos sir.
Brilliant information, my engine wasn’t going forward, just into neutral and reverse, took the gearbox apart n fixed what I thought was the problem but after assembling it back it now goes into neutral and forward but not reverse, I’m starting to think it may be something todo with the shift shaft?
thanks Danny think this may be the problem with my 1988 mercury 2 stroke, had the prop repressed after thinking it was a spun prop ( wasnt ) still no forward gear and just revs , no reverse either, the gear thing maybe the problem
It took me three days to find a video on this I really do appreciate it thank you so much would’ve been great if you titled it Yamaha shift rod or shift problem. Thank God I found it and thank you for posting it. Mine is a little different there is a drain hole on the front loweer case you have to remove to push in on that shift shaft to slide the shift rod down all the way. Hope this helps someone in the future also. GOD BLESS
I have a Yanmar 36 HP engine. Forward and reverse is working. RPM is full when forward and reverse speed is given, but propeller speed is only on forward gear. Speed does not catch. There are 3 water outlets. All three work. RPM pays a lot. What a problem.
Hey Danny I have a 90 hp mercury shifter won’t go in reverse the problem is in the lower unit I can hold pressure on shifter at top of motor and turn the prop till i feel it touch then it will Wouk good for a while what u think
Hey great video and very informative as always! I a quick question, my outboard when going into reverse won’t click in as usual so the RPM increases as I put back the throttle and then she clicks into reverse at high RPM. Have you any experience or solution with this problem? Iv only had the boat on the water two days and my heart is broken 😅🫣
Mate, just came across your video about outboard gear selectors, but It seems to me your engine idle speeds a bit fast, it would be easier on our gearbox if your engine idle speed was reduced a bit, robin
I need help with my 1999 25hp outboard. I messed up and pulled the lower pin next to the drain on the lower unit. Now it go back in. Damn thing! Can you help please??
WASNT LONG ...After I had my Mercury 2 Stroke 6hp motors, lower end unit resealed, that it Stopped wanting to go in Reverse. Hope they were not the cause of it, and May just be just coincidental, Because It is Old; Bought it new in Late 90's
have you ever taken shifter shaft rod out of mercury outboard and it comes out of the cam? any tricks to get back in cam without taking lower unit apart?
Hi Danny. Just watched your great video. I have a 1987 mercury 80hp 3cyl. When I put the muffs on it,it goes in and out of gear no problem. But when I'm on the water it will go into reverse but when I put it into forward it starts to skip. I machined the dog clutch and it seems to fit happily with forward gear but when I put it together and put it in the water it starts to slip again. Should the spring hold it in place or would a little wear on the forward gear cause this. Your Irish reader.
Danny S Hodges my 9.9 johnson stays in reverse will not go into forward. Changed clutch dog detent spring and balls. Hasn't helped. What else can I do. Perfect running motor. I don't wanna get rid of it.
thanks Danny I have 150 Johnson 1996 went out on lake boat would not go in reverse totally surprised me worked fine last year. It goes in forward and natural fine sometimes I have to wiggle control in neatural or engine wont start any ideas?
I accidentally pulled my shift rod out of the gearbox while changing the impeller. Now it won't go back in. do i need to pull the gears out and put the shift rod in first or should it be able to be pushed back in by its self?
can u show how to check the linkage on an outboard please. my Tohatsu 9.8 hp is jammed. wont go into either reverse or forward. pls let me know what could be wrong and what needs to be fixed. thank you
I do not how or understand how to disconnect the shifter and linkage(FNR),My problem isthe shifter willnot go into reverse and is alos difficult to go into forward.
My Yamaha 4 Hp 2 stroke wont shift into neutral or reverse it only goes forward even if you shift . The propeller stops when shifting into neutral or reverse and just goes forward when accelrate even in neutral and reverse mode. Someone knows wats wrong
I pulled the shift cam out of my lower while doing the impeller yesterday. It’s a 1985 9.9hp Yamaha do I need a puller to get the assembly out to reinsert the shift cam?
Well I'm having a problem why motor keep spinning in neutral and when I put in first gear it cuts? If y'all can help please. Friend my a request on Facebook at Tufflawn Volairrow thanks

Danny S Hodges
Do you have any on a 1977 Johnson 70hp? 3 cylinder motor
Question...does it really matter what kind of grease gets on gears in a outboard motor?
I mean does it have to be marine grade?
Those bearings are designed for fluid inside. Try not to get any or it will cake your bearings and they will not roll properly
@@davoh7910 Thanks Davo H...
I had a strong feeling it wasn't good but had to ask for emergency purposes..for "just in case"...
Have a great day.
I only trust this man because of his accent. Thanks for the video!

Great explanation. Simple with no BS.
Cool video. You covered issues I believe are the cause of more gear engagement problems people have with their outboards than the clutch dogs being worn. Dog clutch lol not clutch dog
Although a clutch dog could come in mighty handy when youse hunting eggs
