THIS is What They Don't Tell You About the Disney College Program

  • DCP applications have just dropped and I wanted to share some things that I wish I knew before heading off to my program. These are the things I felt were most important to know, and some of these things are very vulnerable parts of my experience. I hope this helps the next wave of applicants be more informed about the realistic side to the Disney College Program.

    I did the DCP back in 2001. It was fun, but I had one major issue with it and it still affects my decision to visit Disney to this day. Back then, we made $6.50 an hour. Out of that $6.50, Disney only paid the CP employees $.50 cents an hour. The rest was government subsidy because it was an internship (or whatever they called it to take advantage of this loophole). On top of that, each person has to pay $67.00 per week to live in the apartments that the CP people were required to live in…. Guess who those were owned by? Disney!! So, not only was Disney basically getting free labor from all of the college kids they would hire, but they were also making money off of us since we had to pay to live in Disney housing. Not to mention that most of us didn’t have cars to get us off the property, so we also had to
    Spend our money on Disney stores, etc. we essentially worked for free while Disney made money off of the government. It was such a disgusting practice that I ended up self terminating after 2 months.

      I’m really curious, not being an asshole, but Do guys have a different experience? I had zero drama there. I had minimal money and no car and i had a great time. The shuttles were so handy. Went to the beach. Wondered all over the parks and Orlando. Grew so much as a person. Had all the friend time All the friends i needed and longed for and also plenty of alone time to myself. The experience there was amazing. I learned so much about myself. I wouldn’t change it for anything. It’s really about the big picture and coming into yourself as a young adult and who you want to be as a person. How you interact with ppl now as opposed to how you used to as a student. Just enough tough times to build your character but also you will never go hungry or be out in the cold. It’s like a summer camp introduction into the real job force with padded walls and fun built in for you. No other companies are like Disney. Relish that time. You will never forget it.

    Wow, this was GREAT! Thank you. Very fair assessment. Some of your negatives I think could actually be positives for me (I'm a very introverted only child, for example, and I'm used to spending time alone). But everything else makes total sense (party culture, drama, wanting a car, etc.) and I appreciate you talking about them so that it's not a culture shock when I get there. I'm graduating next month and doing the DCP from October '23 to May '24. I'm using the summer to save up some money before flying down. I want to work in children's media/entertainment, and I hope the DCP can help me with that! Would love to work for Disney TVA or Feature Animation one day, maybe do a professional internship if I can. Definitely excited about the learning and career development sessions you take with the program as well. It should be fun, but I want to take it seriously too and get the most out of it.

    I was going to do the Disney college program from January 17 until June 13. I got there and I made it about a week and a half. There was a time where I just had no motivation to work for Disney anymore at all. I would come up with excuses to not even go to my traditions. Although it was fun, and I made some friends, I was drinking heavily every single night. It became extremely unhealthy, and I knew that if I stayed there the trend would probably continue. like I said, I lasted about a week and a half and I made some great memories, but for me personally, I knew that I had to leave you are so right when you talk about the loneliness and anxiety that comes with it. I was not expecting to be so anxious and dislike it that much. My advice for people would just be to prepare yourself with the first couple of weeks because it is really hard and it is such a big adjustment to your normal life. It’s not all happiness and rainbows.

      University faculty here…do NOT “unenroll” from your college or university to do this program unless you really do NOT want to return to that campus. Talk with Academic Advisors on campus about how to maintain enrollment while “taking a semester or longer off”. Maybe take minimum one class online with that campus or some other kind of temp leave. If you unenroll, you have to reapply and pay all the new fees (current at the time of reapplication) and meet all “new entry requirements” which may mean you won’t get back in. Every person and college /university relationship is different but over the years I hear this too much from my students who “wish they knew there might be alternatives” when wanting to either take some time away from full time studies or do an internship like this one. Just thought I would mention this since my niece and I are watching these DCP vlogs.😀

      You just wait until their next wave of acceptances! Keep checking on the applicant dashboard to see if you get an NLIC, as that immediately disqualifies you, but Disney Programs should announce on their socials when the next wave is. That day, you’ll know if you’re in or out. Good luck!

      Yep this is what we call “the waiting game” if you follow them on twitter or instagram they will post when there’s an acceptance wave, it’s like Christmas Day every time they do it. It can be hard waiting, but try not to focus on it toooo much.

      Hi! I took time off from school to do the program, so I wasn't completing school work while I was there. I think with my schedule it could've been possible, but it depends on your location I'd say. Congrats!

      For me, I got in on my first try, but for a lot of people they get denied sometimes 5 times in a row and then get in. I think if it’s something you want, you should at least try, but overall I would say it’s not easy to get in.

    I am currently a high school student researching the DCP out of curiosity and interest. I wanted to ask; do people participate in the program for the work and life experience, even if it doesn't align with their career all that much? As it stands for me, I live in Pennsylvania which is of course not in close proximity to Florida. However, if possible, I want to apply for the program while in college. For now, I want other people's opinions on if participating in the DCP is worth it to someone like me, where it's pretty out of the way and unnecessary for my education and career paths.

      Hey there! I'm kinda in a similar boat with being a high schooler researching about DCP but I live in FL and have friends who are currently in the program or have been recently. From what I've heard it's a great experience to have even if it doesn't align with your preferred career choice. And having the DCP on your resume can get you lots of jobs because of the experiences it gives you. It is hard work though so you need to be sure you're ok with all that comes with it(like she said there are long hours and it gets lonely sometimes) before you get there because otherwise you'll be taking a spot from someone who would really love to be there and could use that involvement. to answer your question about whether it would be worth it I think it absolutely would. Just remember that what you get out of the experience greatly depends on what you put in. Good Luck!!

    Why do they call it a college program? Sounds like you are just going to a job.

    • @desiregarza6926
      @desiregarza6926  10 месяцев назад +1

      Because it’s an internship of sorts, and like all internships you are doing a job, but it’s more of showing you what it could be like as opposed to actually being employed.
