I'm awestruck! I gve up. I thought I was ok at 15 for only 6 months of playing, but 45 years later I don't feel that I've grown all that much. Power to this young guy. Bebop is definitely in his blood and genes. Very impressed with his take on one of the toughest jazz tunes of all time......
There's 2 things I love about this video 1- Varady is playing some really tasteful stuff that's well beyond his years. 2- That rhythm guitarists looks so pissed off at the fact that he's playing rhythm for a 13 year old kid.
another talent, don't you ever stop playing your guitar and don't listen to what people say, most of the times they don't really know what they're saying... follow your heart and enjoy music as you did when you started... one day we will meet and I hope we will play something together, until then I look forward to listen to your phrasing while playing... bravo!!! musician loves you!!!
Great post. I have seen other posts of him with the likes of Martin Taylor and Andreas Oberg. With Oberg he scats along with "Donna Lee" ala George Benson. You're absolutely right Thom- pure talent indeed. Interesting pick guard on that guitar- it looks like it could protect his six string from cannon fire!
This is one of the most inspiring videos I've ever seen. Love the fluidity and seemingly endless wellspring of chops! Witnessing someone at such a relatively young age dispensing Benson-like lines as if it's as natural as taking a breath, is a beautiful thing to behold. The really exceptional players almost seem to be just listening to their instruments (think Bird or Wes). Love it!!!!!
@TheAxe4Ever yeah! He is certainly one in a billion, he has just loved jazz since a very young age and dedicated his time to playing, certainly seems to help to have a father who plays too.
I just read about this young man in Guitar Player magazine. In his interview he says he plays by ear. I call it playing from your soul. Imagine that! Very little musical schooling and this kid plays like this. I've never been a believer in reincarnation, but this youngster makes you wonder about where else his soul has been in the past.
@MoodyEdghaim That guy in the back is his dad, Bandi Varady. Besides attending jazz seminars and Skidmore Jazz Institute, Andreas was taught by his dad initially.
"Talent" is just a word people use to conveniently ignore the many hundreds and thousands of hours of practice it takes to achieve a high level of playing. It seems advisable to simply enjoy and appreciate what this young musician is doing with his days.
I've been playing guitar for 8 years and i think i can play eva cassidy's autumn leaves but not that well, on second thought... i don't play it well at all... have i wasted 8 years of my life? why didn't i practice more.? maybe i should just quit...I HATE MY LIFE! Dam you genius boy!!!
Don''t beat yourself up! Aristotle said that no life not questioned is worth living! The fact that you know where you are and where you could do something about it (practice is the word we unrequited musicians dread) - You do have some great music to offer us all. So please get some more sounds, more often, more satisfying from your guitar - posted on RUclips in 12 months time. Your Christmas present to us next year all around the world!!!
I’am with Lelitela (did I wright it right ?) Art -and specially music - is not a bloody race, Music should make us happy and fill our souls with emotions?
This kid is so good, he doesnt even need to show off and plays donna lee in absolute perfect bebop uptempo with class and not like evry1 at 4000bpmwankmode
incredibly great playing from this young man! Tasty and inventive, some risk taking which gets him points in my book. (and a 'note' for the group; though it adds 'drama' to the scene, scowls (sometime unconsciously worn) are really kinda' a drag when they're unbroken for an entire number - especially one where the character of the tune isn't all that scowl-worthy - there are some and situations where true emotion and concentration take over but we learned a long time ago to control that).
@Sunderlanding Don't forget that Bireli Lagrene, Julian Lage and Nelson Veras were wiz kids, too (I'm not sure about Pat Metheny). What a great beginning, huh?
Killer playing; obviously your youth combined with your skills get attention, but you could be proud of this if you were 30, 60, 80, whatever. Kudos; keep it up man!
@SamRommer Yeh, I don't get why people talk about him improving. He doesn't have to. If an adult guitarist came to my city fronting a combo and played like this, there'd be no complaints.
When Thom Bresh and Jack Pearson both mention a guitar player, I sit up and take notice because they have to be great, not just good. This is certainly the case with this young man.
The amount of jealous people commenting on this is astounding! A small minority of guitarists will ever get to this level, to be there at 13 is truly ridiculous!
how can anyone dislike a 13 year old playing this well? see what fucking stupid ass world we live in. This is clearly amazing jazz music right here, and the fact that he is 13 makes this unbelievable. fuck those haters hahahaha

That’s his father playing rhythm guitar... he usually plays bass.. His dad taught him guitar.
I have performed and taught for 40 years and the young gentlemen should be proud.
SamRommer, you are absolutely correct. Very few guitarists no matter what the age will every be able to play like this young man.
Bravo Andris! Nagyon tehetséges vagy! Csak így tovább!
Awesome performance, glad to see someone so young have an appreciation for excellent music!
this kid has the maturity of a seasoned player but the energy of 15 year old. beautiful virtuosity, i wish only the best for him

Wow! What maturity of sound, knowledge, technique and concept!
Isn't it incredible what videographers can do with special effects? They made it look just like that kid is playing this! ; )
Amazing,simply amazing.
"the other guitarist" whom some suspect of being unhappy is in fact happy.
He's Andreas' father Bandi.
blimey - brilliant - - unBelievable...love it!....can he get better when he grows up?
I am sure the rhythm guitar player is not sad. That's his dad.
phenomenal!!!! Made me twist my head all around because of all the awesomeness and at the same time my mind is boggled by his age
Awesome version of Donna Lee, this young man is playing stuff men my age dream they could play.

Ive been playing since i was 14 (almost 10 years) and this wee dude can play me under the table... and hes 13 in this video!!
Saw this in a masterclass in college the other day....I was just blown away....

Well this performance fits the term "too good!" And it goes down as one of my favorites!
You make me smile when i listen to your guitar, that's a thing that you shouldn't change, and I'm sure you won't.
@TheAxe4Ever yeah! He is certainly one in a billion, he has just loved jazz since a very young age and dedicated his time to playing, certainly seems to help to have a father who plays too.
great feel and good taste...uncommon characteristics to find in such a young player!
Love to see young folk achieve great things.
Astounding, amazing for a 13yr old! It seemed like his hands and guitar were about to spontaenously combustwith the energy.
This kid will be a giant one day. Great player! I love the style.
Pure genious, born talent and a lot of practice, starting early ... God bless him. Wish I played 5% of what he plays...
Wow, It's amazing to watch 13 years old boy plays Charlie Parker on guitar! Well Done!
Really Great!
What a gift. I am so humbled. May life flow through your guitar as long as your life will allow. Thank you for being.
Love this guy

I LOVE THIS KID !!!
grande abilidade ...menino prodigio !!!!!
Pretty sure the dad is just proud of how good his son is and is trying to hold back tears of pride/joy.
I think this kid is going to save Jazz. He's certainly inspired me to really listen to it.
The only one i have ever seen who might be the next Bireli Lagrene, at least when it comes to guitar playing...great..absolutely

His age seems a side issue. He is a truly sensational, subtle and brilliant player.
Dont be ashamed to be a great Saliery once there is just happened Mozart/superhuman in your time or vicinity. It has anything to do with a practice.

Talent is fantasy, doesn't exist. The only thing that exists is hard work, discipline and study :)
grande este pibee

Really amazing!
(Hope the 6 brain dead 'people' that disliked this don't ever reproduce)
