After listening to the three recent new podcasts with Tom Gelle and today's with Andy, I am pondering how best to start back on snow next season when I return to Kaprun for the December Snow Camp with Andy. If I bring my regular Eastern Canada hard-pack skis (157cm, 124x74x108, radius 11.5), it sounds like Andy will have to pretend he doesn't know me! 🙂 The December camp will probably be my first opportunity to be back on snow next season, so I'm thinking that I should go for something like 170cm with an ~18m radius. Furthermore, I should not do my boots up for at least the first week. All that sounds a bit scary, but maybe good medicine to get the season started right! On the subject of tibialis training, I find it's pretty helpful to do my StairMaster training without putting my hands on the supports. One is constantly forced to balance on the pressured leg as one steps, and that works the muscles that govern ankle stability, including the tibialis anterior (shin) muscle. It's also good balance training to do that with closed eyes, but one has to be really careful to not fall off the machine!
I love those step master machines and like always I am an advocate of not using hand rails. When I see people on running machines holding onto the bars it is just dumb unless one has an injury. The problem in December is you never know what the conditions may be like. Deep powder to hard packed glacier ice. Just make sure the skis are well serviced and you start slowly and build in performance. You can of course join us in Argentina if you need to keep your ski legs.
