HI Sharon. The benefit of magic loop is that as your work gets smaller and smaller, you don't have to switch to double pointed needles (you can use the magic loop throughout the project). With circulars, once you begin decreasing for the top of the hat, you'll need to switch to double pointed needles (or magic loop with a longer cord) to be able to work the fewer stitches without stretching them out. It's really personal preference and all of the techniques work :)
