I have read all the novels except Djin Patrol. And I love love love your content. But as an Indian and as a dedicated reader of Translated literature I hope you include the great works like Feluda By Satyajit Ray, Works of The Polymath Rabindranath Tagore and novels by More regional writers (PS - I can North eastern writers are mind-blowing from my own reading experience). I love that you named Arunava Sinha because he is a huge name in the Translation realm. I encourage more people to devour his works. And I love you guys, you all do a great great job. I'm so happy that you did an Indian edition to your recommendations series.
@@WillowTalksBooks you are literally my favorite human being every since I stumbled upon your channel. Thank you for doing such a great work. Much love, reading Rabindranath Tagore and thank me later ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’ve been interested in Northeast Indian literature lately. I think I’m going to buy some books by Arupa Kalita Patangia. Who else would you recommend?
I loved this book recommendation. I am so glad you suggested books of different writers other than Arundhati roy or Amitav ghosh, because everyone knows them, they are the face of contemporary indian literature, but i think other great writers need recognition too.
Here's a suggestion, Cobalt Blue by Sachin Kundalkar. A beautiful beautiful book. It was originally written in a regional language but has been well translated into English. I hope you enjoy it :)
I love indian literature! In these days i' m Reading a fine balance by mistry and the gun island by ghosh. Djinn patrol And the story of a goat will be the next
I generally don't read too many happy books and when I try reading my not-so-happy books from India, they hit too close to home >< so I tend to read fewer than I should 😰 I do want to read Yogini after hearing its description though. Another nice video! :)
I totally understand! Reading upsetting books set in my own country, that highlight the political bleakness of our own lives, it hits too close to home, like you said! But The Yogini is definitely worth your time, I promise!
You've managed to sum up my exact reason for not reading enough Indian authors despite being an avid reader. I had never thought of it like that until now.
@@TrishaGupta_2094 I'm glad it's not just me who has experienced this! I have picked up The Yogini recently and I'll be reading it soon. I'm treading lightly, but I am planning to read a little more Indian literature.
@@Djcooksandbooks Me too. It never sits right with me that I read books from everywhere but my own country. I picked up Ghachar Ghochar the other day on a friend's recommendation and the title at least has me really intrigued. Hope you have a good time reading The Yogini
I genuinely think you should read Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh and everything Rabindranath Tagore wrote( he did win the nobel prize in literature afterall ) Some of the few recommendations of his masterpieces are Chokher Bali or ‘A grain of sand’ , Gora, The post master , ghare baire ( home and the world) . Also it's so exciting to see your favourite person on the internet recommending you Indian books ❤️😱 I absolutely love your content and recommend you to practically everyone I meet . I've read all of them except djinn patrol on purple line. Will put that in my tbr. Thankyou for being so wholesome and amazing 😭❤️
Jhumpa Lahiri, Amitav Ghosh, and Benyamin should have made it to the list if it is meant to be a list of contemporary Indian novels. And if one really wants to dig into Indian novels/literary works, they should read Tagore, Sarat and Bankim Chatterjee, Premchand, Mahasweta Devi, Mulk Raj Anand, Manto, and Chugtai.
One is very grateful for these kind recommendations, which were put forth so gracefully. As one mentioned in one's video, this is a list of books that one has so far read and enjoyed. More lists will come in the future once one has read and enjoyed more contemporary Indian novels.
@@WillowTalksBooks As a fellow reader I would love to suggest you few. Also loved Breasts and Eggs. I read it after watching your review and Murakami’s Breathless comment 🌸🌸
Love from India. Am a new writer trying to become full time. It's difficult to be so. But I have a head full of great ideas. Hoping you will read me some day.
Have you read "If You See Me, Don't Say Hi" by Neel Patel? It was my favourite short story collection of last year. Really beautiful story telling with diverse characters, sometimes surreal and strange, always fascinating food for thought.
Indian books are best enjoyed if you can read hindi.. Then you have a plethora of good books.. Translated versions lose the essence of Indianess.,theconsciousness, the culture.. I would recommend short stories.. By Bhisham Sahni Krishana Sobti PREM Chand Muktibodh poems Dinkar Nirala .. This is the real deal..
Thank you so much for the recommendations. I found your channel fairly recently and have been enjoying your reviews and recommendations. May I also Suggest 'Karvalo'? It's a south Indian Kannada novel. It's fantastic:) You might enjoy it!
A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth is one of my favourite novels, and anything by Arundhati Roy is phenomenal. I'd read her electricity bills. Brilliant review!
Ah! I'm so happy Indian literature is getting attention too :) Thank you for this video!
I'll be reading a lot more Indian lit in the future so look forward to more videos! And I'll keep updating the article as I go as well 🙂

"The God of small things" is really popular recommendation.
I'm going to buy that for my sister.
Good choice :)

Just like me lol. I'm in search for some light hearted indian books but many good ones are also depressing

Thank you so much for the recommendation! I will absolutely track down and read some Ghosh stories! 💜
These books are classics but they are more than a 100 years old, and may not suit his audience's tastes.
Im Indian so it'll be better and more relatable to read Indian Novels.
ok
Nice picks! I'd recommend R K Narayan. I feel he is a must read Indian author along with Premchand and Rabindranath Tagore. Blessings. 💞🙏
This is a refreshing list!
Indian literature is very vast. And some of it is completely missed because of it being in vernaculars.
