When you start these experiments I am always worried that things will go awry. But then your logic hits and I begin to understand your journey. So, so inspiring. ❤
First of all, thank you for for being foster parents. Those kids get so little stability and comfort in their lives, constantly being shifted place to place. Giving them a safe place even for a little while is so important. I guess I should talk about the vase, too 😁 I'm not a wood crafter but it's always fascinated me. I appreciate how you "read" the piece of wood before starting and point out the flaws and features, why you mount it in a given way, and what tools you're using and why. I admit, whenever you reach for any sort of coloring agent I go NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! because I like wood to be wood colored, but the ebonized finish with the silver wax came out quite well. Reminds me of owl feathers.
Thanks so much, fostering can be very hard work but it is always worth it. We have two sisters that have been with us for 5 years now and we are so proud of how far they have come 😀
@@MikeHolton You are absolutely right. We did this in our family, too, for about six or seven years and took care of children in critical situations until it was cleared where they can stay permanently. Some for just a few days or weeks, some for one or more years. In total it were eight children (besides our own three). With some of them we are in contact until today. In other cases sadly we don't know where they are now and how they are doing. But we still like to think of all of them and we hope their lifes got enriched by the time in our family as much as our lifes were enriched by having them in our home.
@@drucker03 We are the same, some of the children we are still in touch with and others we are not, I would love to know where they all are but that is not to be.
This turned out great. Fingers crossed the sale pieces sell for a good amount. Providing for foster kids can't be cheap, and they need all the stability they can get in their lives.
The people who license their home ( s ) for forster care receives money from agencies . I met a few couples whom opened numerous foster homes n was able to purchase homes that their regular job's income would not have provided .
Good morning Mike. Once again you have produced a beautiful piece which will take pride of place in a calm environment for a child. Thank you for sharing and inviting me to join you on your journey 🌞
I really enjoyed watching your confidence build as you continued to carve. Aren't cherry trees wonderful? They spend their lives making people happy with flowers and fruit, and now this one will continue to make people happy forever. Beautiful piece. Would make a great lamp base.
Beautiful result! I think you made the right choice making the decorative cuts at slightly different angles. This has a real "midcentury modern" feel that I really love.
I love how you continue to evolve as an artist. This vase is stunning! The feathering makes the piece incredibly expensive looking and utterly unique . Love, LOVE this vase!! I have no doubt your sale pieces will do brilliantly. I'm so excited for you. ☺️
Don’t be nervous! Even just pretending confidence and perseverance wins. It does have a ceramic vibe to me…and I love it! Great vision and work. Cheers! Joe CA
Well done, Mike! New techniques are always interesting to attempt. It looks Great! I like the randomness of the intentionally different angles of the cuts.
Mike, great fun watching your experiments! You are so right, it is often that first step that is so nerve-wracking!! Beautiful vase!!. Kudos to you and your family for welcoming foster children to your home.
Loving the shape of this vase, and the lovely wood grain. Enrich time you try new things I hold my breath, not wanting you to have accidents or bad outcomes. But you always surprise me. And this one really did. So glad you put on the silver paste over the ebonizing solution. Actually the cuts on it look really good! Nice work Mike. ❤
What coincidences; the last time I used ebonising fluid (homemade, white vinegar and rusty nails) was on cherry and although I say so myself, I got a lovely result, and just today I moved the bottle and thought it is time to have another go, and now you have prompted me, too! I love this vase; I guess the carving time was quite lengthy, but what a result, with the silver embellishing paste - an inspired choice, and, as always, an inspiration to us all. Well Done, Mike, and thank you.
Hi Mike, Well this was a chip of the old block. That was a very interesting design and it turned out great yet again. I'm sure the foster children will appreciate such an organic looking vase. The ebonizing really gave it a very neat finish. Till next time. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Hello Mike. As always, you have taken us on a wonderful journey this time it reminded me of a tropical island washed by an azure sea. So beautiful, thank you. Have a great week.
@ Hello Mike. I have managed to attach that comment to the wrong video. 😊 It was for your fabulous “island extravaganza”. My only excuse is that it has been a loooong week and the brain is not functioning that well! But I did watch this video too, and it’s as lovely as the island! Have a great weekend.
Mike this is an exquisite piece, it has an aboriginal feel to it. It was so lovingly created with a touch of nerves resulting in such an amazing finish! I love it. Congratulations on the beginnings of extending your foster family. I’m sure those children who come into your family’s care will have wonderful memories and experiences that will be with them forever. No matter how long or short term they are with you. Xxx ❤😊 God bless xxx
Thanks so much Shelley, we have two sisters that have been with us for 5 years now but we also do short break and emergency placements, we have had 8 of those since the summer 😀
Thanks Amanda, I have no problem with failing as I know that by doing so I will learn something, if you always bear that in mind then you are free to try new things with an open mind and just have fun 😀
Adding that silver wax made those cut in areas pop so nice. I love the way the knot looked near the neck. It had an almost kintsugi look, just with silver. Great job as always Mike. Some people are going to love those pieces you are selling!
Thanks once again Mike. These projects really inspire me to have a go and being a beginner I learn so much (not that it always works as well for me yet!!) thanks
Comfort zones are where we rest between challenges. I like the elegant combination of the grain, the unusual color and the shape. And I particularly like the variability of your vases and bowls
never ceases to amaze me how different the wood looks when it's finished compared to at the start. never would have guessed that was cherry if i'd only seen the finished piece. lovely work as always Mike. Well done!
I love this vase vase because you've done two things. You've made look like Ironstone pottery with the ebonising fluid, and the carving makes the texture interesting. With the addition of the silver wax enhancing both dimensions adding the subtle highlight and that satin sheen. So it's not only beautiful to look at but enjoyable to the touch. It reminds me of Studio pottery pieces where the glaze enhances the form and texture. Nice job, Mike. 👍
Lovely job, Mike. Reminds me very much of the decorative pieces that were around in the late 60s/70s, made of ceramics or glass. Yours looks much better!

Yes they are Molly, I have two in my back garden and they are beautiful. The wood also turns so well 😁

Beautiful vase. It is always hard to make that first move when trying something new. Great job!
Thanks Vicki it is but it's also so exciting lol 😀
Wow, the ebonising is amazing. Got to get me some of that. Nice that the dig sorted out the knot, too. I love it when it all works out.
What a fun experiment. Beautiful work!

Mate that is incredible!! good job

Gorgeous. Really love this one.
Thank you! 😊
What a turn up for the cherry.
A real dark horse.
Brave first chisel strokes.
Looks a lot calmer than working with a Dremel!
🙏 again
Thanks Nicholas, it's so much more fun that a Dremel, this is very calming 😀
Wow this looks really retro. Love it.

It's scary to go outside your comfort zone, but you did it well. And now you have a new skill.
Thanks Stan, it is but no matter if you succeed or fail you still learn 😀
