I like the Japanese bionic commando. Ours got censored badly. I mean I get the subject matter of swastikas and nazis is a bit touchy in the West, but did they really have to call them the Badds? Why make a ridiculous organization name. Also I like that the uninvited specifed you are going to a western style mansion. Man, that intense doo dee doodeedoodeedoo death music still freaks me out 30 years later. Makes me feel like Im a kid again getting so scared I dont even want to look at the scene.
Hitler was, oddly, a popular villain in Japanese media, up until about this time, actually. He shows up as the mastermind in Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode, as well- Also with a name change (to the delightfully absurd "Smirk"), but not a sprite change, oddly.
In the North American version of Top Secret they censored all the Nazi imagery and changed Hitler's name to "Master-D". But he still looked like Hitler, we all knew he was really Hitler, and they still showed his head exploding, which really freaked me out, as I was young and not yet used to such things in video games. Also "Master-D" calls you a "damn fool" in English. Nintendo of America was so over-the-top with its censorship it's hard to believe they let even a mild swear word get past them. let alone the gore.
Old videos are prohibited from being uploaded to RUclips due to their sexual content, so they cannot be re-uploaded. We are releasing a modified version of the video with the more extreme content removed under “Membership”. Censorship has become much stricter since then.
In the 1980s, Nintendo had a policy of strict censorship for games released in the North American market. No blood, no sex, no religious or controversial content, etc. The justification for this was "quality control" and to appease the fears of parents buying NES (Famicom) games for their children, but the reality was that with the other home game companies failing, Nintendo was looking to control the market. Nintendo had to approve all published games, you had to use Nintendo manufactured cartridges and you could only use one of a list of approved "mapper chips" (extension chips inside the cartridge that helped manage the memory and graphics). Since many of the "mapper chips" from popular games like Castlevania III (Akumajou Densetsu) were third-party ones, the Western release of the game had to use an inferior chip with a quality downgrade, especially in sound. But besides all that were the content controls, which outright prevented the release of some Famicom games in the west, and permitted the release of others only in censored form. One of these was Bionic Commando, in which all references to Hitler and the Nazis were removed. The enemies are called the "Badds" and the final boss is not Hitler but a generic character called "Master D". His face is the same however, giving a strong clue as to who he's supposed to be. Strangely enough, the scene of Master D's head exploding is preserved, despite Nintendo's content restrictions. (The censors must not have played all the way to the end before approving the game...) Bionic Commando is still a well-remembered title in the West, and stands with Mega Man (Rockman) and Castlevania (Akumajou Dracula) as one of the top tier titles. A remake for seventh generation consoles called "Bionic Commando Rearmed" was well received. The stones in Ankoku Shinwa remind me a bit of the movie Cocoon, which was a classic in the 1980s but now is almost lost. In the movie, aliens use a swimming pool as an incubation site for others of their kind inside rocks that are actually "cocoons". But the old folks have been using the pool and found themselves rejuvenated. This drains energy from the aliens, and when the cocoons are opened, the aliens inside are found to be shrivelled and dying. Seeing that as a kid was both scary and sad. Uninvited, as well as similar games like Shadowgate, was originally released on the Macintosh. Gruesome death scenes were a normal occurrence in graphical computer adventure games. In the original computer release of Uninvited, the sister was a brother. There was nothing creepy about the relationship; at the end it simply said "Your brother is now himself again. You have done very well indeed." I don't know what the people behind the Famicom port were thinking. "Let's make the brother a sister so she will be cute. Oh! She is so cute I have a crush on her now..." Japanese game developers can be weird when it comes to girls. In the Western NES release, the cross you use on the demon was changed to a goblet, again because of the prohibition on religious content. The sister also hugs you and just says that she must have fallen asleep and had a nightmare, and you tell her that's all that it was. No feelings welling up in her heaving bosom or other strangeness. Also, I'm not sure about the Japanese text, but in the western releases it was clear that the demon was possessing the brother/sister's body, and it left to take over yours next. That was why it seemed like the sister was the demon: when you first encounter her, the demon is using her body.
Always a joy to see some of the games us westerners didn't have super easy access to! Major fan of the translations you provide on them too!

It is really cool to see the kind of games japanese people used to play during their childhood.
I love these, thank you for uploading

Amazing work. I absolutely love these videos
0:38 Capcom really had the guts to make a game like this. 😬

Gore scenes with many pixels are so lovely ! ^^
Man the older games definitely push the mature content back in the day

2:14 damn, Hitler's head exploding was pretty intense.
The intros look much better than the gameplay.
