Just catching the replay. Our last frost is end of may, so we have 6 weeks yet. I’ll just be getting my tomatoes started this weekend. Potting up my peppers into their forever homes until they are ready to be planted. I’m going to prune them back so I started them early so they’d have plenty of time to bounce back.
Thanks again Nate, just caught up now while making soil blocks in my kitchen, weather is still shocking here, cold, windy with some sun appearing now and then, summer is somewhere out there hopefully. See you later on your Thrive channel.
I had a bunch of cold hardy seeds going in my basement but had terrible germination. All seeds were a year old and didn't store them well. May have packed the soil too much and misted them too much.. gonna start some more and see if I can pinpoint the problems.. I grew micro greens right before and thought my seed starting environment was good. Luckily the season is young and failure is a great teacher.
Death is very natural, I think of life like the fruit of the earths mycelium. We are the fruiting bodies moving around full of life and cycled back into the earth awaiting the cosmos again in the grand cycle when the earth meets its end! What a time to be alive!
I’ve always wondered how homegrown celery compared to store-bought celery. I’ve never really liked store-bought celery because of the almost chemical taste it has. Which I’m assuming is from all the synthetic fertilizers and inputs that are put into it because it’s such a water filled planned. I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t take up the flavor of whatever chemicals are added to it. This year is my first year trying celery, so I’m very excited to see how it tastes!
Started tomato seedlings on heat mat and under grow light. Trying to sprout some exotic peppers (Carolina Reaper and Apocalypse Scorpion) for fun😅. QUESTION FOR ANYONE: my onion seedlings are sad. Started on heat mat and grow light for 16hrs back in Feb. only 6” or so and very thin. Is it worth still planting them in the garden to see if anything grows?
Saying “ what’s $5 Canadian like a $1.50 US” was cringe af. He donated and gave what he could and you’re cracking jokes on him. You’re starting to come off as money hungry.
@@gardenlikeaviking well I apologize for jumping the gun with accusations. I also respect the fact that you addressed it instead of ignoring or deleting the comment. Re subscribed.
I wondering if vacuum sealing the onion seeds as soon as they are done being harvested will help keep them longer. I’m thinking about creating a small seed vault and vacuum sealing a bunch of stuff, and throwing it in the freezer as a just in case and I’d really like to do onions too
I have not jumped the gun...my rhubarb is up 8 inches..dandilions are up...my fruit trees and shrubs starting to set leaves...I.have many plants started indoors...they are looking really good. using compost tea and the willow growth solution...what a game changer they both are...thanks for sharing...
The way I use chicken manuer from my chicken coupe in my garden is simple. I just get a wheelbarrow and shovel, and shovel up the manuer built up from the past year. Then I just spread it out over my garden in like the first week of February. Then I just let the rain and sun compost and break it down until the growing season starts, and I start putting stuff in the ground in the last week of April - first week of May. This seems to work for me.
I CAUGHT ON end of the season last year andWOW.. odiferous, resiny sticky lush pungent exceptional pest and disease free loveluessss tune in ..... lets do this go go go go go go go go #gardenlikeaviking
My onions were planted in groups as seed last year autumn and have survived the -10°c and are perked right back up! Spanish garlic is great after the winter aswell!
I’m so sorry I missed the live was so busy this weekend but am watching it now and so far so amazing! Thank you for taking the time to do these live sessions. You are appreciated. You are making a difference in my gardening!
Just bought some kelp meal from your amazon store! Excited to make the Viking Tappin Roots! I just found a source of new willow growth. Also, hardest thing for me recently (last season and early this season) is dill from seed. Its so delicate as a seedling and I think I over or under water, or shade them out on accident. Hoping to figure it out this year. Really all herbs from seeds have been tough for me. Not sure why.
thank you for supporting the channel!!... and my friend Dill and its brother Fennel are basically like weeds and are super hard to kill once established and they self seed so easily!!... lol... so for sure you're "killing them with kindness".... just neglect them more!!
@@gardenlikeaviking Thanks for the advice! I think that is my biggest problem with gardening. The plants know what to do, I just need to let them do it!
Composting gets complicated so much! My grandad used to chuck everything organic into a pile at the back of the nettles and flipped it every now and then and left under a tarp, always magical and I now thank him as he's my inspiration and I garden because of him and my great grandfather! Only one in the family to carry it on im sure they're somewhere now going "what a F*cking idiot this guy is with his youtubing and hippie natural methods! but we love him! " hope you're well!
lol the "hippie natural methods" on this channel are actually the true OG practices from our ancestors with slight modern twists... using rototillers and Chem fertilizers is a very modern phenomena but I get what you're saying lol my grandpa too!
@@gardenlikeaviking yeah he loved his chicken manure so ill be fair he didn't get too caught up in chemical fertilisers during the grand push of them to at home growers, but good god he tilled that earth till it begged him to stop! Im sure whatever methods we use they'll be happy we have some soil under our nails! Have a great day 😁👊
My last frost was 4/7/2024 according to farmers almanac for my area in virginia. I started my seeds 2/29/24 based on this date. I haven't transplanted yet. I'm waiting until 4/20/24 to transplant them. German butter ball.😊
Officially started, meaning in the ground as of 4/23: potatoes in grow bags, carrots, daikon, Napa cabbage, bok choy, and a bunch of other starts in the winter seed start (milk jug) method ( which is my favorite way to start seeds) then of course my peppers, tomatoes and some flowers started indoors. Can’t wait because this year I’m going to try growing watermelon. Btw- can those seeds be started indoors??
I’ve started a 5 gallon bucket with kitchen scraps and roots from my plants that were in containers. We’ve filled it in 2 weeks. But there’s the husks from corn on cob, the cobs after we ate them, some moldy bread and shrimp tails. I’m on a mission, but with low budget. Do u think using a 35 gallon garbage can with holes drained would be good enough for composting? Don’t want to be turning piles and checking temperatures.
I am winter sowing (first time) and have cold hardy plants growing nicely. The WS vegetables haven’t sprouted yet. I am concerned they flooded when I was out of town so I also recently started seeds indoors. If I have great success, I’ll share with friends that garden. Zone 5B April 29 last frost. I did learn this year to wait till the weather forecast is consistent and the last frost date. My plants may wait a week to go in the ground after the last frost date.
I’m winter sowing as well. My spinach cauliflower and broccoli took off this past week. My sunflower seeds sprouted and grey zucchini. I do have about 8 jugs I sat in a recycling bin and forgot about them 🤦♀️. There’s no holes for the bin to drain so my jugs have been flooded for 2+ weeks before I realized that’s why nothings sprouting yet. It’s peppers and tomatoes, so thought it just wasn’t warm enough yet. But saw algae in them yesterday. So tomorrow I’ll be starting more jugs as salsa veggies are most important for my husband as he’s Mexican and doesn’t go a day without his tomatoes peppers and onions.
Did u drill holes in the bottom of jugs? I do like 4 on bottom and 1-2 on sides about 2 inches up. So in case they get mud caked up on bottom covering the holes, there’s still on or 2 on sides to allow drainage.
First week in June usually😂 still need to sow flowerseeds indoors now if theyre to have a chance of flowering before fall. Sowing salads and cale outdoors in a few weeks, in the midwest Swedish mountins.
I've heard that blossom end rot is due to not getting enough water or inconsistent watering and that if you mulch the plants real well it will keep the moisture content more even and eliminate blossom rot on tomatoes. In Germany, my neighbor had issues with blossom rot until they built a hoop house and raised the tomatoes in the hoop house and that was enough to fix the blossom rot issue.
I’m ecstatic Nate addressed the hydroponics issue of lack of flavor and nutrients. I listened to a soil biologist years ago and realized that hydroponically grown food was devoid of nutrients. But that doesn’t stop the food corporations from using it to make money. It’s buyer beware.
I did cover crops for the first time. Winter rye and red clover. I’m in Virginia 7b The rye is about two feet talll now. Starting to take off. Since I have to wait to terminate before planting tomatoes and pepper I just started the seeds. I wanted to make sure they weren’t sitting in pots too long waiting for rye to terminate.
Also started ginger feb 16 and it’s doing great. Some is already a foot tall. Just transplanted into pots but will wait till consistently warm before putting outside.
