That‘s only a thing in very few shops/offices and for government employees (except teachers). Well over 90% of people work on Friday afternoons.

Have worked at companies where this was customary. Somehow I kept being in the group that had to be exempted from this and do a full day.

That doesn’t fit to every kind of job. But it is true that from Friday lunch time on you can forget about getting any phone calls done with councils, doctors offices, school admin offices ect.
They say: „ab Freitag um eins, macht jeder seins“.

30y ago you have a short friday without working more at the other days in a lot of companies. And Saturday most shops are closed at noon, grocery stores like Aldi 4 p.m. ..... I don't know why this doesn't work today.
    Mo-Fr they were closed at 6 p.m. or 7 p.m.

I am glad Antoinette and others can do what suits their families better.
Down under I have never heard of this as being a German concept.
My welder flatmate works a half day on Fridays, has done so for many years.
It makes sense in very many businesses, because going to work earlier or later means you might avoid the worst of the traffic congestion.
In many jobs, like in the fire service, people work 4 on, 4 off.
Jobs like nursing... those nurses in the Emergency Department may have the option of doing 12 hour shifts. They are very popular. Teachers would be unable to do less teaching hours.
Teachers can't scrap half the lessons once a week.
I guess a lot of the world would have a variety of work schedules, according to many factors.
I wonder what others have to say.

What's better is working 10 hr days and getting 3 full days off.

The last several years I worked 4/10s. If Monday was a holiday I had a 4 day weekend.
