Wheel tethers were introduced later in 2000 after a marshall was killed by Jarno Trulli's wheel. They didn't work very well, so they made them a hell of a lot stronger afterwards, which is why you seldom see wheels fly off nowadays. Unless you're David Coulthard.
even though this comment is old it's incorrect; wheel tethers were introduced before 2000. They just didn't work very well. Even before the accident with the marshal at Monza, the FIA was going require "double tethering" wheels...
You're right about 1998, or at least in reaction to the Belgian GP (they were introduced in 1999). But wheel tethers were crap as demonstrated in the Italian Grand prix, whereas these past years, only the Red Bulls seem to shed wheels willy nilly.
wow - shows u how dangerous and quickly it happens.............. one minute ur in the coolest spot to watch an f1 enjoying ur day - then heidfeld comes, crashes and kills you instantly
Wasn't really his fault. More the AP03's fault. I mean, the season afterwards, he scored 7 points finishes with Sauber, which pretty much proves that it was car not driver.

That just about sums up Prost's 2000 season.
I love the sounds of this video.

Suddenly a wild Heidfeld appears... It's supper effective!
Thanks f1diva. Have now corrected!
I love this crash. Such cool sounds...
Nice!!
kind of sums up Nicks F1 career a bit.

No die. No problem for the camerman.
I see this moment live on tv ;-)
