    Yes, I spent my life listening to Todd and Utopia, going to see them, and very interestingly enough, my kids go back to being kids when they hear their music as well; so, it's not just me, he's been handed down to my kid's life as well. I still love Todd and Utopia and I will never stop loving them, never, ever.

    I saw Todd 2 years back and was amazed at how strong his voice still is. He hadn't missed a beat. Sadly it looks like Ralph has health issues and wont make the tour. In typical Todd fashion, they have posted on FB looking for a keyboard player. If you're a fan of even casual aquaintance, go to the show. He's still great and there wont be too many more opportunites to see him.

    I am very, very, very beyond ecstatic to hear this! Hope you've been woodshedding, Ralph, you've got a lot of ground to cover! So glad you got Ralph in Roger's stead. All the guys looking and sounding good, healthy! It does my heart a lot of good. Thank you Todd, bless you! I'm inspired by you daily.

      They were like the Beatles in that way. Each member had his own distinct personality and you knew who was singing the lead vocal on a particular song.

    Utopia's song chord progressions are so interesting to me. I'll never forget hearing Adventures album the first time. I was so blown away how interesting and different each song was. Beautiful harmonic choruses, Todd's signature "oozily building" chords and that "proggy" electronica riding on sometimes very jazzy rhythms. This is why this album is one of those that always sits in my play list. It seems to satisfy a particular musical flavor that I'm regularly hungry for.

    I saw the RA tour, and I have seen him multiple times since then. I went to the TR I show, too. He is fantastic, and it's always a great time, no matter what he's doing. Didn't care for the 80's Utopia, but loved the first three records, not to mention his solo work, and his production work. A life long Todd fan. There is way more to him than most people know, apparently. His work with synthesizers and software was groundbreaking. He pioneered buying direct from the Artist, online. I met him a few years ago, and he was very kind and patient. A lovely man. Kasim, too.

    • @leonakita
      @leonakita 6 лет назад +3

      Utopia in the 80s became a mishmash and some albums were just awful overall. Furthermore, Todd's tours have been hit or miss with quality. You can watch a lot of them on youtube. Some are just horrid performances. I think I'm going to pass on this ego tour....these guys are frankly to old to pull this off now. Voices are gone...even Kasim's which was a strong asset for the band. You can't execute the brilliant harmonies that Utopia gave us without quality voices so I think, without backing vocal support this will just be a mess!

      @sandyturner1911 6 лет назад

      leonakita I agree, as far as the Utopia records, after 1977. I saw them in 1977, and it was amazing. I'm mainly a Todd fan, overall. The Todd record is still one of my favorites. I like his solo records. His new one is very good. He will always hold a special place for me. Personally, I'm waiting to see if NIN is going to be playing anywhere near me, in the next year or 2. Money for shows is scarce, these days. : )

      Sandy: Well put!... I always knew Todd from his late 60s pop-endeavers and the beautiful 'Something/Anything' , but in college was introduced to RA his progressive new incarnation of Utopia and was hooked. Saw the Egyptian themed pyramid show 3 times! Somewhat sadly, that progressive style morphed into hard pop-rock with terrific harmonies....so I hung in there as 'Opps Wrong Planet' was still a great Utopia album. His individual outing 'Hermit of Mink Hollow', was released in that same 77-78 period and was a fine solo effort. After that, things went decidedly poppy with Utopia, and a bit too much so with marginal songwriting until the release of the self-titled 1982 'album and a half'...that was just the epitome of terrific harmonized hard pop-rock. Nearly every song was great. Sadly, the new Network label went under and it wasn't promoted well which did not bode well for Utopia and the songs being promoted. That was their last great album, IMO, even though I bought the remaining releases through 1985, none compared aside from a few standout tracks on each. I agree, his new release is quite good, and his seeking out other contributors including Trent Reznor and Joe Walsh was a damn good idea and it shows well in the final product.

    • @leonakita

      I guess I'm doubtful that this foursome can pull off the sound quality of Utopia we have come to know and love without some backup...at the very least , in the vocal department....and lets face it, with all due respect to Ralph, you cannot just replace Roger Powell....he is just so damn good at what he does and was integral to the sound of the later Utopia configuration.

    • @sandyturner1911
      @sandyturner1911 6 лет назад +1

      Yes..We are on the same page..I'm a little jealous that you got to see the RA show more than once..I will never forget that show stopping move..It was awesome! I guess I never really knew that the pop iteration of Utopia was a real thing..lol! I kind of ignored it after Oops! I love the Initiation album, and I really liked the Healer record..Very good for engaging in the mind altering substances we used to enjoy..lol! I guess we all have to keep our memories alive. You can't go back..Sometimes, trying to go back and recreate the past ruins the actual past experience. Nice to talk with a real Todd fan, too, btw. Todd is Godd!

    The '92 Japan show that Kasim mentioned? That was exceptional. Remarkable how the four of you (with Roger Powell) could return to that music so many years later and absolutely nail it. They remain some of my favorite recordings of your music. Would love to know if there was any/much vocal sweetening in post production, vocal track redo's... Doesn't matter if so. Those live tracks just sound so good.

    Saw the boys last night in Portland Oregon. #Wow. The first set was what Todd referred to as 'The Blizzard' - so much classic stuff from the first albums & Another Live, covers too (Communion w/The Sun, Do Ya, The Wheel, Something's Coming etc ) The 2nd set was later, more 'recent', commercial (hah!) Utopia. Of course, JOV for the encore. They were tight & strong. Gill Assayas did a great job subbing for Roger on keys. Boy, they had a lot of material to learn, and relearn!

    I experienced this show at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia, which is particularly special because that venue is literally within walking distance from the neighborhood where Todd grew up. Watching the video right now and I have to point out how important owning a studio was to Todd's development. Think of it. The Monkees were criticized for not playing their own instruments, but very few did because studio space was expensive. You had to book them and fit in with their schedule The only album on which the Association did all the tracks was their first one. It was done in a garage. After that, it was professional musicians. I've been a Todd fan since Runt. My first choice in listening to music is headphones because I want to hear every layer a musician adds to the song. Todd is the Les Paul of his day. And Les Paul invented his own studio. An artist without restrictions can do great things.

      Well said George. I agree, there were a handful of musicians in the 70s that could do it all like Todd, Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa and Paul McCartney come to mind as some of the more prominent ones. I and many like myself I'm sure wanted to follow in their footsteps, not only to become more creative, but as the 80s drew near people became more insular. I for one applaud Todd for all of his incarnations and road warrior spirit. He must really love it in a way like the show people of a bygone era. After all what do you do after you've done it all? You do it again. You are spot on about the headphones comment. Imagine hearing early Todd, Zappa and Floyd without headphones, not earbuds, headphones real cans, unthinkable.

      Have to agree about early output versus later output. The same goes for BS&T, Chicago, The Who. Argent had nothing on the Zombies. When Arena Rock came in the door, I was walking out.

      Chicago shouldn't be put in the same sentence with those other groups. They were so far beyond the others. j/s
      Understood your point, though. Back then, groups had something to prove when they first came on the scene. so it tended to be that way.

    Watching the clip & considering the task they have taken on is heartening. Reading the comments posted here- less so. ( I wish I hadn't...) Why comment if you don't have something positive to contribute- or at least not slanderous or skewed toward negativity? That said: These are big shoes to fill. Particularly for Ralph Shuckett. I haven't heard him sing- plus the version of Utopia I imagine we'll be seeing almost definitely would lean toward "Oops Wrong Planet" onward. The band's divergence from "Prog Rock" into tighter, more concise songs, as well as the 4 headed vocal monster that was Utopia- even simply having to sing those parts is a tall order- and they are all world class musicians.
    The problem lies in that Utopia inherently was, by and large, a group who did what they wanted. Their musical palette was unconstrained. This tour is something the fans have been clamoring for for years. So, there's that. Another challenge for them will likely be the absence of Roger Powell, as he was definitely a key element within the band. His decision not to tour couldn't have been easy, as his position in Utopia defined his musical career. That said, I completely respect his decision not to tour- having recently gotten off the ferris wheel myself after 25 years. Physical circumstances no doubt are better what they were in 1986 (far less technical limitations, touring parameters well defined with regard to travel and accommodations- it's certainly not as grueling as it once was) and the touring industry itself has much more of a standard template than it ever has. Working under the aegis of Live Nation is both a blessing and a curse- but I have no doubt it is only because of Live Nation that this tour could be logistically put together. Record companies are not providing tour support in the way they used to- (plus, there is no record company in this case, or record to promote, or even "records" as we knew them). Live Nation is ubiquitous in the touring industry, thereby at this point can secure the proper sized venues in each market based on the strength of the draw in any particular area. Look for bigger shows in Chicago and throughout Ohio- former Utopia strongholds. Live Nation has the whole thing wired up- from the hotels to the transportation to the sound companies to the promotion to the lighting/video to the promotion etc, etc- so it's a paradox that perhaps the only means by which a tour like this could come together is for "The Man (Live Nation)"...to benefit it's shareholders' legitimate interests and lining the pockets of executives. This is how they work.
    The musicians, however, need to work with their instruments and voices in a traveling performance context. (It's work.)
    The technicians, engineers & production people need to work. This is an opportunity for them to do so.
    Utopia was one of the better (if not most popular) bands of their era. The people will pay money to see them.
    All the personal tripe about their age and physical attractiveness is a load of hooey. Is age a crime now?
    Go see Katy Perry. Those of you who went after TR's personality: Get a life. It's a Concert Tour.
    Listen: TR has always leaned left politically, and while not especially inclined to carry a banner, has never been particularly restrained in his opinions on the mic. It's just that Fox News opted to sensationalize something he said at a particular show- (is that "news"? What about "Swing To The Right?"- a far more political statement by over four minutes) Fox's "in depth reporting" followed up with an interview attempting to paint TR as the stereotypical burnt out, stupid, uninformed ex-rock-star...which didn't go too well- TR being "captain of the debate team" and all. In that interview, TR kept sharp focus on what he SAID, not necessarily his political beliefs, despite being obviously and crudely baited by that naive Fox drone. TR has his beliefs, and doesn't particularly care about yours, any more than I do, or you do about mine. I don't really care that much about his- whether or not I agree with them, except the theme of the music has always been somewhat idealistic. And I absolutely love it.
    You can choose to buy the ticket to the concert or not. That was essentially this gist of the FOX kerfuffle.
    Let it go. Or make a stink. Or get on the internet and yap about something not related to the subject at hand. Whatever. Here in the U.S., music no longer holds the idealogical power it did in the 1970s. Fox News Corp does.
    "Time wounds the heels that no one can see...." (or was it...)
    You could also choose to shut up. As can he. (As can I)! My point is: A Utopia Tour is a cultural exercise, featuring music.
    It's not a fashion show, not a beauty pageant, not a political rally and (despite TR's utter musical brilliance) NOT a cult-hero worship rally. These guys will need to work hard for their money- just like I do.
    I'll happily part with the $40 or $50 to see these guys do something the rest of us (NONE of us) could do.
    I'll be there. And voluntarily going to a concert (without being paid tidy sum to do so) is remarkable for me.
    Cheers!
    Best news I've heard in months.

    I admit I really got into Utopia only in the lat couple years, due to their RUclips videos. I used to listen to the Todd songs in the 70's. I'll show up at whatever Utopia gig I can get to in 2018.

    TODD RUNDGREN'S UTOPIA FEATURING TODD RUNDGREN, KASIM SULTON, WILLIE WILCOX" - No Ralph... hmm. curious.

    Really look forward to the tour, and hoping you play Onomatopoeia. And Can We Still Be Friends. A very-short-term beau gave me that album when he broke up with me in college. And the song resonated, and we really did stay friends that year!

    Saw the first Utopia reunion show in 2012 with John Sigler and Kevin Elman. Doing mostly the early Utopia stuff. It was pretty cool! I figure if they could do the full 30-minute version of the Ikon on that tour, I'm totally expecting Singing in its entirety this time around.

      It was 2011 actually. Played in January that year in NYC at the Highline Ballroom. The only 2 shows Moogy did with Utopia. He was going to be on that later fall tour, but his cancer was taking a toll on him. He eventually passed back in NYC midway through Utopia as they were touring. Was so glad to see Moogy twice and got to meet him the first night. Such a kind, gentle, humble soul. The fall tour was great too, but definitely missed Moogy. Kasim had to pick up the slack on keys as Siegler was still on bass then.

    My wife and I went to see him in Milwaukee a couple of years ago. The Packers play (or use to play) "Bang on the Drum All Day" when they score a touchdown. We waited through his entire show for this great tune. Never happened. I have rarely been as disappointed as I was that evening. I won't make the mistake of buying a ticket for his show ever again.
