For anyone coming here in 2021 after latest Neighbours racism allegations, WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO before reacting. Accusing a neighbour of eating your dog because they are Asian background IS racist, this story however is not racist. It is an obviously clumsy, but well meaning attempt at educating the average racist Aussie of 1993 about changing their thoughts and behavior towards people from Asian backgrounds. In 2021 however it seems the mere mention of a racist topic, regardless of usage, context, purpose etc is automatically racist. That is ridiculously stupid and just gives people with actual racist attitudes more excuses to not change their views.
@marthasheilds2446 Just as not all Asians are bad, and not all indigenous people are bad and so on. Not all Aussies with British heritage are bad, either. Painting everyone with the same brush, whilst pointing fingers at others and labelling them as racist, is nothing more than righteous hypocrisy. And how can anyone invade a plot of land that was not even a country that specifically belonged to any of the many tribes that just happened to have found their own way here, too. They were quite happy going to war and killing others from different tribes, fighting over pieces of land themselves. But simply because lighter skinned people turned up and happened to be victorious, that is somehow wrong and racist and so on. Such accusations towards ALL white people constantly is only creating more division and disharmony. You don't create any semblance of equality by tipping the scales in the entirely opposite direction.
They rented No.22 from Paul until their house in Eden Hills got renovated. They hung around for 6wks (6wks too long) getting involved with the most cliched plots, then buggered off and were never heard from again (well, sporadically, Doug kept in touch with that Dad as late as 2014)
@@sheavague7058 Just because someone reiterates the storyline which called for the men to be more level-headed (especially since their business affairs could not come between them), whilst the women were legitimately as crazy, impossible and intolerable as each other, is not sexist and it certainly isn't nowhere near being racist. It's a plain old fact. Where is the racism, when Mr. Lim is also one of the men folk that the OP is referring to?
Lol, yes, in fact I'd forgotten she even existed, but watching this reminded me that when I was a child I fancied her, which was weird to me at the time, because she was clearly annoying (and a girl, gross) and I thought I must be some kind of weirdo fancying an 'old lady', but watching this now, she looks like she's in her mid-20s, and is very attractive.
+Hulk2k6 It was a brilliant time to be a fan. 1991 - 1993 finalle had a great mix of characters, comedy, drama, and cliffhangers. There was a couple of "questionable moments" like this and the acting around Jim Robinson's death from Fiona and Rosemary, but in all, 1993 brought us a terrific, well written, strong year.
But the Lims though... They were shit actors and a racist stereotype! (This is one storyline that made me question my fandom) I even heard as late as last year Doug was still in contact with the dad!
The idea of Neighbours exploring areas of Australian society like racism may have been well-intentioned on the part of the producers, but the delivery of this storyline was excruciating. I'm not sure what's worse- the abysmal over-acting/under-acting of some of the cast involved or the dreadful dialogue. Only the late Anne Haddy as Helen seems to emerge from this dross with a shred of dignity left intact. If I remember correctly, most of the cast involved in this clip were let go shortly afterwards, perhaps the producers belatedly realised how badly this played on television.
The Lim family were let go only a few months later Julie wasn't axed though, she was actually one of the most popular characters back then. I agree that this family and storyline is really horrible and the acting is quite embarrassing really.
I agree that the acting was abysmal. But the storyline was not too bad. Considering even to this day, many people like to make crass jokes about Asians eating cats and dogs. So it's one way to try and address racism to some degree. After all, racism does come in many forms.
Exactly. That's why it's not racist to assume some Asians do eat dogs, because it's a genuine fact. But it IS racist to jump to conclusions and assume or actually accuse your neighbour and someone you know a little and speak to, who just happens to be from sth east Asia, has apparently barbequed and ate your dog simply because your dog is missing and the last place that the dog happened to be seen was near the neighbours place. I read recently that the woman who played Julie felt really uncomfortable having to act out that storyline. I don't blame her. It was pretty tacky, even by 1993 standards.
@@zzh315 I have seen a couple of shows, so I have a bit of an idea already. That's why I laugh when people say that only white people can be racist. They are truly clueless if they think like that.
It was this stupid storyline that made the actress who played Julie to quit. People kept abusing her on the street because of it. Shame as I liked Julie.
Or, perhaps it was their way of addressing racism. It may seem a crazy to some people, how they addressed the topic. However, racism does come in many forms, even in so-called jest or sheer ignorance. Anyways, it's not racist to say that some Asians eat dogs and cats, since they actually do, particularly in sth east Asia. But it is racist to assume or accuse someone they know of actually barbequing and eating a dog, simply because those being accused happen to be Asian and the accusers pet dog has gone missing and it was last seen near the house where the Asians live.
Aussies have long known how to represent Australia in their own unique and proud way. And not all Aussies have been, nor still are, all bad people who are only racist, etc. It's just that now, anyone who dare happens to look a certain way and has a certain skin colour, is crucified, ridiculed and put down, and they're blamed for anything and everything, their history is being altered to suit the righteous and so on. Ironically, that sounds exactly like all white Aussies and what they have been accused of doing to other races and cultures for so long. But now the scales have tipped in the entirely opposite direction, and people foolishly believe that somehow creates equality. Equality is NOT tipping the scales in the entirely opposite direction. That only creates even more hatred and division. It's time to stop the hate towards EVERYONE, regardless of their heritage, skin colour and so forth.
Not by much. Point is they all sucked and this was a LOW for Neighbours. Bouncer's Dream about three years before was forgiveable but this was another level of bad! This is one of the storylines of the 90s the show will NEVER live down.
They were the token non white characters that tend to appear on the show every few years and then get written out once the makers have had enough of pretending their all for racial equality.
