- I've always heard people speak high praise of THE SANDMAN comics but I'd never read them. As a novice, I'm excited to experience this world Neil Gaiman crafted with fresh eyes! #TheSandman #Sandman #Netflix
The Sandman is an American fantasy drama television series based on the 1989-1996 comic book written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics. The series was developed by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg for the streaming service Netflix, and is being produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television. Like the comic, The Sandman tells the story of Dream, the titular Sandman. It stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, with Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, and Sanjeev Bhaskar in supporting roles.

Please DO NOT spoil plot points or things that are not explained at as of this episode above or prior. If I missed something or misunderstood, clarification is fine as long as that answer doesn't spoil something the show is going to or may cover in a future episode or subsequent seasons. I know the source material is complete and a lot of people know things I don't but I want to experience this blind and fresh like you all did for the first time!
I like the expression on Corinthian's face when they advise him a child should avoid a serial killer convention. It looks like he genuinely had not thought of that.
Fiddle Green listening to the women panel: Oh good, progressive feminists.
*He realises they are all serial killer.
Fiddle Green: Okay, I stand for women's rights, not for women's wrongs.
I thought the same thing during that scene. He went from moved to horrified so fast.
I LOVED that scene!!!😂 I laughed so hard…
Dream only has dominion over those who die in their sleep, specifically if you die while dreaming. Matthew is one of those.
The reason Mathew can stay and Hector can’t is bc Mathew died in his sleep so his spirit was in the dreaming when he died.
In the comics I think it was because Hector didn’t have a soul cuz his parents were trapped in an endless cycle of reincarnation. Never understood why he had a ghost without a soul though. The show simplifies things far more by eliminating the DC stuff.
I always thought Hector Hall was such an interesting character because of that. I suppose they could tackle that weird conundrum should Hawkman get his own movie or something…if at all.
Your discomfort at Funland talking about his method is SO relatable. There are so many moments in this show that make my skin crawl, but I love every second
I’m sure I don’t want to know anyone who doesn’t feel at least uncomfortable about that.
and I still see people who didn't understand what he was doing.
@@ayaehab it deadass took me a couple episodes to realize his schtick 😭
@@w33dn0se3 what exactly is his schtick i skipped that part mainly because i didn't understand what he's talking about
@@shawndablo7863 - Fun Land specifically hunts children. In the diner that we're introduced to him and the other convention planners in, he takes an interest in the waiter because he supposedly looks younger than he is. In the comic, this is actually the reason he targets Rose Walker at the convention. It goes without saying that he murders his young victims, but you can probably piece together what other crimes he might be committing against them (unless you're young, yourself, or your mind just doesn't go to such dark places, in which case, I don't want to ruin that for you).
You know you’re surrounded by grave danger when the Corinthian starts to seem like a safer option as a guardian.
Fiddler's Green is an afterlife, generally for sailors (though it's also associated with the US' 1st Cavalry Division, apparently).
According to Wikipedia (the article should be spoiler free, except for the paragraph that mentions Neil Gaiman and _The Sandman_ in its first sentence) it first appeared in Frederick Marryat's novel _The Dog Fiend; Or, Snarleyyow,_ published in 1856, as lyrics to a sailors' song, and has appeared in several other pieces of literature and music since then:
_At Fiddler’s Green, where seamen true_
_When here they’ve done their duty_
_The bowl of grog shall still renew_
_And pledge to love and beauty._
I know Fiddler's Green as an Irish bar/restaurant in San Francisco. In the Wharf, just a block or two from the docks, the tiny horseshoe bar was a great place to get a full (and fairly cheap for SF) hangover breakfast along w a hearty bloody mary to start the next day. Patty/Pat/Paddy was the owner for over 40 years, and unfortunately had to sell the place some years after his wife passed. I got to know him while he was bartending elsewhere, and somehow never heard the significance of the name Fiddler's Green...or, more likely, he was just very good at his job and I don't remember hearing it lol. =) Hearing the description by this show, and reading the wiki though, both are very fitting for the feeling of a space that you can't help but sense is filled with good.
It certainly makes sense that Gilbert generally seems to mentally be in a good place (with the exception of the cereal convention).
Haha, seamen
@@esdrasfilipe431 a family name for the descendants of sailors...not an easy life on either side of the pond.
This episode has great little bits of adaptation. In the comic, we just see all the convention panels as part of a montage of everything happening at the convention, and the dialogue in each of them is almost directly lifted from the comic. Having Gilbert stumble into each of them and slowly realizing what's going on is a great bit of added dark comedy. Stephen Fry is perfect for that role.
Stephen Fry was practically born to play Gilbert. I could not imagine a more fitting casting. And the bit of him stumbling into the convention halls was great. Especially him thinking he's listening to some women-empowering speech and looking moved (which was very sweet), only to be mortified a second later as he starts to realize what they're talking about.
It's pretty interesting how the different endless handle their responsibilities differently, with a very different mindset. Death, with a grim task, explains pretty well in Episode 6 that even she believes maintaining a friendly face, helping mortals through that very difficult stage of their life (death). Dream, which you would think of as a more light-hearted and pleasant phenomenon, has a very different demeanor. He is ever objective and strict, dark and emotionless.
Maybe there is reason for that. A more flippant, fun loving monarch might just cause too much chaos in the already chaotic and ever-shifting realm of the Dreaming, and would cause terrible disasters easily.
Or, maybe, Dream is just this kind of guy. Impassionate, maybe fair, but not too empathic. Maybe he will learn - he had many lessons already. Contantine scolding him for not helping her dying lover. Death showing her how she handles her duties and remains a person. Admitting that Hob Gadling is a friend. Admitting being wrong to Lucienne. And slowly, he changes. But he is an Endless, change does not come that easily to such an ancient entity.
Eloquently worded friend! Best of dreams to you
Dream is actually incredibly empathetic, but he intentionally suppresses his feelings and enforces rigid rules and regulations for fear that without them, the collective unconsciousness of the universe he is tapped into would overwhelm him and wreak havoc on reality. He keeps others at arm's length and tries to remain cold and detached so as to never make himself vulnerable. In doing so, he deprives himself of life's many joys, such as friendship and purpose beyond one's function. But as we've seen so far, he's made a few steps towards breaking down some of those barriers he's had up for so long. Because of this quest he's been on, to recover his tools and the stray dreams, he's been forced to interact with humans more than he was previously used to and they're rubbing off on him. This includes Matthew, too, who, of course, was human not too long ago.
To start w Charles Dance and David Thewlis, add Patton Oswald and Gwendoline Christie, a sprinkle of Mark Hammil, and end w Stephen Fry... holy Hannah this was a good series.
Awesome reaction! To answer your question, The Family Man is a DC character most notably associated with John Constantine. He is a cereal (😉) killer and a rival to our favorite chain smoking warlock.
Such a shame he couldn’t make it to the convention.
Matthew is different from Hector in that Matthew fulfills a specific role in the Dreaming’s hierarchy: Dream’s Raven. Hector was basically a stowaway.
Dream is a millions-year-old personification of an abstract concept. Humane (or human, for that matter), he ain't.
billions years old
does that mean he's supposed to feel humanly emotions? or are emotions not limited to.just humans? Cause he clearly feels empathy, is kinda sassy, also looked almost teary eyed when he mentioned none of his siblings came to his aid. I don't know why I thought emotions are only limited to earthly beings.
@@inzaghiscornsalad7034 - I commented this elsewhere, but:

The next episode briefly touches on it, but Tom Sturridge (the actor for Dream) also explains it in much deeper detail in pretty much every interview and he's very passionate about it, putting it into better words than I could dream to.
Fiddlers green isn't a nightmare but I do love who they cast and how he played the part. The sweet English gentleman fit perfectly
It's creepy AND satisfying to see Funland look a lot like his comic book counterpart. I wonder how the actor feels like about his role LOL
I can't imagine it would be fun to land that role in particular.
The baby is important, but it probably won't come up for a while, so Dream has a good reason to be interested in this dreaming-conceived child.
have loved this show so much that i have bought the audiobook with Neil Gaiman as the Narrator to see what's missing
the puns in this episode and comic/audiobook are GOLD.
and casting Stephen Fry is just perfect.
it boggles me how people don't see what Funland (the actor did an amazing job, straight from the panels) is doing, ITS RIGHT THERE.
I liked the changes they did there, once you get to that part in the comics you will catch them.
took me a while to realize that The Corinthian didn't recognize Gilbert because Gilbert is (*SPOILERS*) not a person. At first i thought they'd recognize each other.
Be careful with spoilers.
@@edersonmoura866 yikes. thanks. edited.
It was a great episode (nice reactions from you ! ^_^)
Boyd Holbrook is perfect in this role.
I just now realized that Fiddler's Green made Rose fall asleep so she would enter the Dreaming, where Morpheus could reach her. But he couldn't have realized what kind of interaction she would have with Morpheus once in the Dreaming.
This doesn't make sense. Fiddler's didn't know Rose had anything to do with the Dreaming
In the comic he implies his hunting ground is Disney and he says something like it's great because they protect you cause they don't want that info going public so it's a win win. It's even worse haha
The bogeyman drowned because of swamp thing in the comics.
And the family man was an antagonist for John Constantine in the Hellblazer comics.
How many times does he have to warn people to not bring evil into his swamp? They just don’t get it.
Now he's just the bog-y man.
Cereal convention, lol. I don't know how the police didn't notice this place
I guess that’s just not what the cops wanted for breakfast.
Maybe if it was a donut convention, the police would’ve taken more of an interest 🍩😉

I have been bingeing a lot of the series reactions and it’s been sooooo great to see your reactions. I really appreciate the discussions and observations!!!
yep... the baby thing is, indeed, a bit grey 😏
I was trying to think of a response, but I can’t find anything clever to add, in the wake of such an apt comment.
I really love watching your reactions. I realize that I'm always on your channel but wasn't subscribed, mb. New subscriber although not a new watcher 😅. Can't wait to see your reaction to the last ep.
Haha welcome officially :)
Nice modern twist to the "I'm a serial killer, and a woman and I'm proud of it." I'm certain that the revised line was what Neil intended, but didn't expect it. Guess it's best not to play it for laughs.
Bud, Sandman is how I found you and I just wanna say you are Quality. I look forward to more of your content. 👍
big fan of this episode, absolutely loved the reaction, thank you!~
The Family Man was a serial killer that appeared in the original Hellblazer comics, where he killed Constantine's father and was shot dead by John. That's why he's missing in The Sandman.
i really love your reactions 💕
When they said the "Family man" who was supposed to be announcing at the convention didn't show. It had me thinking what if it was the Guy who was Jedd's adopted dad and had him locked in the basement 🤔
Somehow I don't think Corinthian Locked Jed's adopted father in the basement; and if he managed to free himself; 'Family Man would not be able to SEE himself at the convention.
Nope. The Family Man was killed by Constantine, the first human Constantine killed.
Bro the song from this ep (skeletons) got so stuck in my head once I first heard it XD
In the comics, the Family Man was a villain for John Constantine, and an encounter with John is why couldn't make the convention.
Fun fact: The Family Man was an serial killer in the original Constantine series (Hellblazer), so we could assume that in this version he was also taken down by Constantine.
So Matthew died in his sleep, that's why he was able to turn into a bird in the Dreaming. Hector however, died in a car accident in the waking world. He's just a ghost that escaped into the Dreaming. So he doesn't belong there. Anything in the dream world can be created and uncreated by Morpheus.
The song at the end was "Brothers Osborne - Skeletons". A song and Band I did not except to see in "The Sandman"
I can understand Rose's position. At this point her whole experience with Dream is him offering to help her but bailing as soon as he had what he wanted. Why should she trust him?
Especially versus wanting what's best for her friend who actually has stuck with her all this time to help her rebuild her family. A friend whose husband Dream just "killed," as far as she's concerned (he was already dead, but both here and in the comic, either Rose or Lyta accuses him of killing him and Dream doesn't try to argue the point), and then he tries to lay claim over her unborn child? Anyone would be rightly pissed. Dream's just following the rules, sure, but Rose and Lyta are listening to their feelings, which is what Dream needs to do more of (and he's made some progress on that front, but it's a gradual process).
Rulers can't govern a place based on feelings. Here I agree with dream wholeheartedly. Lyta needs to deal with her grief in a healthy m, constructive way.

You can't govern based on feelings
LMAO I love your reaction to all the panels 😂 anyone with half a brain can tell something off. Very off 😂😂
Thank you for the videos. enjoy all your work. can't wait to see your reaction to the last episode. Keep up the awesome job
I know I’m late to this but THE FAMILY MAN was a storyline and villain in the hellblazer series A.K.A JOHN CONSTAINE!
The Family Man is a Constantine villain
Another good episode!!!
Can't believe that Gilbert was Fiddler 💚
Footage leaked, secret 11th episode confirmed!
Since it's not relevant to the show: the Family Man is a serial killer from the Hellblazer comics, i.e. Constantine's series.
On introduction I tought that Gilbert played by Stephen Fry, was in fact playing "The Presence" an aspect of the DC version of God. but that would been to much of a shift out of the smaller story at hand.
He does look the part doesnt he?
Right on time
Dream has changed but he's still got a lot to learn when it comes to humans and how he interacts with humanity.
Why? He didn't do anything wrong.
@@erikperhs_ Guess you missed the part where he told a soon to be mother that her baby was his after sending her dead husband away.
@@Auron1Roxas2 She let herself live a fantasy even though she knew she shouldn't. Dream just hit her with reality. The truth hurts but it's still the right thing to say.
@@erikperhs_ imagine if something ethereal being you've never seen before just popped up and made your ghost baby disappear and also said I'm coming to take your baby away you'd be scared and pissed too
@@NerdyQueen1234 Yeah, from an emotional point of view, she has the right to be pissed. But I prefer to look at things rationally.
Im curious if he will go take the baby from her..I am conflicted 😐
I’m not loving how they are showing Dream to be so weak. In the comics the nightmares (there were two) were actually keeping both Jed and Lyta and Hector, prisoners in there own pocket Dream world where they were trying to be king and hiding from Morpheus. Without Rose’s help, Dream finds them and deals out his Justice. He seems much more Powerful on the books and not so disrespected by his servants.
I agree with you but thats how things go nowadays. When its a male and logical protagonist they are portrayed this way but if its a woman they are never disrespected like this.
Appropriate that you are wearing a Hellfire Club shirt. Does everyone know the Funland - Eddie Munson connection?
I don’t…?
Do you think The Corinthian eats the eyeballs with his eye teeth? Extra points if you get the pun.
dont want the extra points man just tell me what the pun is 😭
@@inzaghiscornsalad7034 lol! Eye teeth is another term for canines (your pointy teeth). The fact that The Corinthian has teeth for eyes makes it a pun. 😀
Puns aside, he actually does in the comics, and I think they implied it in episode 8.
@@julienichols5333 I thought so, but then I tend to go macabre with subtle inferences so I'm never sure. Lol
Get lit fam yo!
This vortex chick-Rose- is pissing me off for real though, your best friend is carrying a ghost dream baby and you're just hmm OK 👌wtf bruh!! Seriously question that!! Please
Who wins in a head to head match. Morpheus or Dr. Manhattan?
Morpheus is many levels of power beyond Dr. Manhattan.
The Endless are almost the most powerful entities in the universe. Of ANY universe in ANY story, for that matter.
Or maybe more like sense of gravitas to sense of gravitas.
why’s rose so bland tho? almost no personality, you can’t really feel her emotions and feelings even when she’s upset, angry
I was okay with the rose walker storyline, no hatred towards it. But honestly if the whole show had dream/johanna team up to fight off demons lucifer sent to earth to take revenge on dream, would've still watched it. Johanna had my full attention with just 1 episode, which is an unjust amount if you ask me
I disagree with her being bland, but she was pretty similar in the comic (though the added flashback gave her some more depth and emotional weight). She gets more opportunities to be much more emotional later on.
@@Kyran1996 i guess it had to do with the actor, she really wasn’t convincing, flat, her face didn’t convey any emotions. and many agreed that her performance was subpar
@@inzaghiscornsalad7034 nothing’s wrong with rose’s storyline, it was interesting. the actor just didn’t bring it and that’s why the last 4 episodes felt lacking something the first episodes had
This is the actress’s first job, she’s okay but it shows when she’s interacting with the other’s.
