My mum went to Pompeii in the 50s and wasn't allowed into some places because of those frescoes, being told: 'Uomo solo!' ('Men only!)

Love this! I think there is still a bit of shock factor for those who visit Pompeii today. Even now we are definitely not as open about sexuality as the Romans were.

Well, in defence of rome, pompei was a bit well know for being debaucherous.

Yes, we are often sold a very sanitised version of history!

2:45 well the fact that an island nation was able to bring 2 ancient empires (india and china) to its knees speaks who has the better culture or military. :D
europe was able to colonize the americas, africa, asia and australia. you really dont think that these parts of the world were living in peace and never experience of war, dont you? its really hard not that hard to choose which culture is better. in history, take all the good and also bad. it is a part of you.

It is a shame that military strength and violence are your standards for superiority. I suggest you further interrogate your values.

The achievements of western civilization is not mythology, it's the exact opposite. Denying and subverting a civilization's history does not ONLY apply to non European nations. It applies to ALL nations. Why segregate, and demean any culture? This weird "guilt" western Europeans struggle with is a personal issue, not a fact of history. History is facts not mythology, or personal psychology. Facts, such as Democracy, secular philosophy, scientific inquiry, revolutions in art, theater, humanism all started and were perfected in Europe. All very positive things that have benefited the whole world greatly.
We need to stop treating cultures in such antagonistic terms. No one should demean one civilization to uphold another. How about praising the positives and criticizing the negatives in each equally instead of being so derogatory towards one only. The only one that has in FACT created the social condition for you to make these videos in the first place. For a historian you really do not understand you own history, and the sacrifices made by your own ancestors so you can so blissfully ignorant of the privilege they created for you in a world still deadly and dangerous for the vast majority.
