88-year-old retires and lives on cruise ship

- An estimated 24 million people are expected to take cruises this year. One report showed more than a quarter of them are age 60 or older, and more than one-fifth are retired. For many of those passengers, the ships are like a second home, but for one woman, ocean liner Crystal Serenity is her only home. Peter Greenberg reports.
She definitely wasn't expecting coronavirus.

lol that's what I was gonna say and why is this now in my recommended

Sad.....
The sad truth is that it's probably cheaper to live on a cruise ship as a retiree instead of in a nursing home.
divisioneight yea it is probably very true, assisted living homes or nursing homes are very expensive
If it was not for the fact that insurance will help pay for nursing home I'm sure it would be.
divisioneight your right
Fox Lover
I think I'm going to keep dreaming for now
Some day I wil wakeup and find me also living and dancing on a big cruiseship.
divisioneight it matters what cruise ship it is but yeah I think your right otherwise she wouldn't be there
Cruise ships should wise up and open a senior line for life plan.
@Joe Guiffre They're Old, not Stupid.
@Joe Guiffre She said she doesn't care because most of the places she has already been to and doesn't get off the ship. Its more about the experience of the ship. I'm young and have been on a few cruises and its something about being out there on the open water that is relaxing and invigorating.....and dare I say sometimes even mystical.
Check about Queen Mary (2?), sold suites and every year 'residents' decide itineraries for the year to come ;)
Great idea
@@aaronshadyoung9567 I came back from a Western Caribbean cruise this past July and I just [loved] to sit out on the veranda and just [feel] the air and hear the sea. It was very relaxing at 1am.
At least she’s not bored or lonely.
far from true - ive spent many years working on the ships, and so many of those people are extremely lonely - and a great deal of them are black-out alcoholics who dont even know what country they're in. They dont care!! (still tho, it really is a great way to live!)
She says she loves babies but they grow up, isn’t there for her grandchildren, that’s so sad.
Yes true once the children are grown its time for her to relax
@@BucketHeadianHagg She can be friends with the crew, but most passengers won't stay on the ship like her so she will probably never see them again.
I know, she's going somewhere nice everyday and doing something.

I want to be like her when I grow up...😂
I caught that
elizabeth nite I thought that was a pretty strange thing to say, but maybe her family is actually horrible 😄
She is very very fortunate. For those that aren't familiar, The Crystal line (6 Star line) is one of the most expensive cruises you can take and the size of her cabin is unheard of. She has to be incredibly wealthy.
She has to be.
175K per year Wow

Why is everyone comparing this to nursing homes, she is not nursing home material--yet.
exactly, totally agree.
I think they probably mean assisted living...calm down
Lmaooooooo!!!! What is nursing material? 💀😂
The room service also has other services, like enimas.
Because it's right around the corner for her.
As an ex Social Worker I saw at first hand the appalling retirement homes that the elderly have to endure in their twilight years. This lady is doing what she wants, paying her own way, and long may she continue. Forget the sour grapes, people, she's content with her lot, and that's all that really matters here.
.... some people want a farm ... others might like to move ... she has the best of everything right there ... and it goes with her ...must be able-bodied tho ...
Not every retirement home is "appalling." What is the point of a comment like that? Some people --- not fortunate enough to be rich like this woman -- end up in assisted living because they can't live alone. And they have wonderful staff to take care of them.
She’s gonna haunt that ship when she passes
Jovanny Alvarez for sure
My thoughts exactly everyone is gonna wanna book her room for a paranormal experience

Must be nice to be able to afford a constant cruise. Good for her, it's better than a retirement home.
Could be cheaper than living in a nursing home
The retro pic of the woman on your profile is very beautiful! Is that you?
@@ElvarMasson Except the steward is not going to clean her up when she has a bathroom accident. If she really needed to be in a nursing home I doubt they would allow her on ship without a family member/caregiver. A few years ago a couple was put off a cruise ship because the wife had dementia and the husband went on an excursion and left her alone. She was found wandering the cruise ship alone and confused while he was off ship.
@@ElvarMasson I work in a nursing home and we are $175 a day, take that x365 days and it's $63k. That's not to say that we are the lowest charging daily rate in town. There are facilities that charge $200-$250 a day. I'd rather spend that on a cruise.

This is an awesome story. I work in the banking industry, and it's heartbreaking how many seniors are home alone without anyone to connect with. I can see this lady living a long and happy life. I love it!!!❤❤❤

I met her and she is a lovely lady. She is not the official needle point instructor on the ship but she is at needlepoint classes and helps new students and she is always willing to help during the day if you get stuck. She also is a great source of information. The staff really does love her because she is a great ship ambassador. She has no trouble getting to a dr or dentist. They have them on board and at ports. Everything can be worked out. She does not sweat the small stuff.

@@matijabesednik5334 I replied to Brittany Ward by saying the cost of the year long cruise is way more than the cost of a nursing home for a year.
You're saying what now? I don't understand your comment.
All the people who wonder why she spends so much money living on a cruise ship, consider this. No mortgage, no property tax no home owners insurance, no groceries to buy, no utilities to pay, no car expenses at all, no entertainment expenses. I'm not a fan of cruise ships myself but hey, each to their own. You go mama Lee. Enjoy the golden years.

@anubhav mitra assisted living...at the very least....is 5000 a month. It rapidly accelerates from there....10 to 15 grand per Month is not unheard of.
Nope. That lady and her husband had to have money before retirement age. In fact, she was wearing a givenchy shirt, which is super expensive in and of itself.
Its said her husband left her between 5 and 10 million and then she sold her home, and everything else...so yeah, shes doing just fine
@anubhav mitra not everyone. I know people whom would go on one if the whole trip was free and they were paid on top of it lolol

Thomas Bernecky yeah especially when they update lmao.
@Julia A Obviously she makes enough new friends from all over the world and maybe she just got tired of the old crowd. Also, who says she's not in touch with the real world? And why should she have to do something "useful" with her life? She's 88 and probably worked her tail off building a business with her husband and now she gets to enjoy life. Why the envy and why should she conform? As to cruiseships "allowing" people to live like this? Anybody is free to buy a ticket, lol
@Julia A in nursing homes its tough to make permanent friends....they tend to die or descend into Alzheimers.I think its a great idea...as long as you dont need a full time nurse.
God bless everyone.
@@trudydavis6168 Right. Why the heck should she conform and go for bingo, bridge & knitting, occasionally do voluntary work and otherwise stay on the porch in her rocking chair, you know the typical stereotype. I smell some envy too.

how much money would you have to save to have a $20,000 a month retirement?
commenter78 I don't know how Saving earns money. One has to understand money and how to use Money to Make Money. Save to have money to Invest, then invest. She and husband did well in Real Estate.
(
That's a goofy comment. I've got a relative who had a small business and who was a spendthrift and market investor. NO stupidity like real estate schemes, franchises or buying tons of whole life insurance. Just pure equity investing. Figure that he averaged about $250k a year of income, and he has "saved" his way to well into 8 figures. Plus, he's not running around pretending to be a tycoon.
$250K is a lot of money to make a given year, but he was sole income and paid taxes as an individual without many business expenses.
It is EASY to save your way in to prosperity in retirement. Both of my parents were teachers. They spent about half of what they made, and in retirement, they have a problem of too much money and not enough interest to spend it on anything.

I have seen entirely too many scary reports of how some nursing homes have staff that treat them ill. That's not a realistic number - looked like an interior room - single person interior room on smaller ships are about 6-800 a week - if you take that 175k divide by 52 comes out to over 3g a year. I just booked a suite for 4 people on harmony of the seas (worlds largest ship) for 5k for 4 PEOPLE - so they way over estimated. I'm saying at 800 a week she's at 42k a year let's say hi at 1000 a week shes at 52k a year. with good retirement plan she could easily be living off of dividends and interest. And think about it - that's ALL FOOD and entertainment for free - she LITERALLY needs to buy nothing - every week they give you soap and so on for free. this IS the way to go. plus let's not forget - loyalty incentives for cruising that much - I bet she get's huge discounts. this is so much cheaper than most retirement homes i bet.

Compare this to nursing home costs though. A lot of these cruise lines are really reasonable when you take everything into account. Additionally, many essentially have "frequent flyers" clubs which add up to other discounts and free trips.
Me and my wife did a 14 or 15 day one transatlantic earlier this year, and it was only about $800 per ticket. Assume $1600-$2000 a month for all the food you can eat, everything taken care of? Beats a nursing home any day of the week, and honestly probably better for her health.

Not really I used to work at a nursing home and DA and Cna the cost for the nursing home was over 135000 a year it's staggering. It's better to be there than in a nursing home your not respected or treated like a capable adult the threat of abuse is high and often unreported. The food is mediocre at best. And if you request something specific your considered a nuisance. I've seen other nurses and Cna individuals tell a capable adult to turn off her t.v. to go to sleep when she didn't comply they pulled the plug on it. Even for that high cost they share rooms have no privacy and the rooms are searched periodically things are often stolen. And the worst part is that nursing home was considered the best in south texas area.
Don't get me wrong there are great places to retire but the standards in some places are really ridiculous. Better not have a pet or you'll have to get rid of it to move into a a nursing home.

harooni22 so about the same as rent
I could not be away from my kids and grandkids. They are the joy of my life.
This video is 5 years old (now)
I hope she is still living this way
God bless her! They should name a ship after her-🤗
I met the lady who used to cruise on the Queen Elizabeth with her husband ... he died aboard ship and made the ship her home for many years until the ship was no longer with the same cruise line ... a wonderful charming lady!
The ship was QE2 and the lady was Beatrice Muller, right?
+sealover how dod u know
+Jungles Bongles I have done a lot of research about the QE2 so I can't remember where exactly I found it, but there is a video on RUclips. Just search for "Beatrice Muller".
sealover YES!! I had afternoon tea with her! A very lovely lady ...
+Patti G Nice! Cunard sold the QE2 to Dubai and after it's last transatlantic crossing in november 2008 and it never sailed again. The plans to convert it into a floating hotel failed and it is still laid up in Port Rashid, Dubai.
Good for her. I wish it was possible for more elderly to live out their days this way.
She’s doing exactly what I said I was going to do when I found out how much nursing/retirement homes cost! I loved cruising way back then, I’m 62 now and still in pretty good health.♥️
Most times it amazes me greatly how I moved from an average lifestyle to earning over $63k per month, Utter shock is the word. I have understood a lot in the past few years that there are lots of opportunities in the financial market. The only thing is to know where to invest…
I keep wondering how people earn money in financial markets, i tried trading bitcoin on my own made a huge loss and now I'm scared of investing more.
@@Florencecoxx That won't bother you if you trade with a professional like *Sarah Alma Martinez* my consultant. I found her on a CNBC interview where she was featured and reached out to her afterwards. She has since provide entry and exit points on the securities I focus on. I basically follow her trade pattern and haven’t regretted doing so.
@@BeverlyTalley You allow people to trade for you? that's interesting, How can I be part of this project I earnestly hope to build a strong financial future I'm interested to take part, I would love to learn, hope it’s safe..?
@debbie765 This is the Fourth time I'm seeing someone talking about Sarah Alma as there are lot of testimonies about her, do you know her ? if yes , did you invest with her?
@@Florencecoxx It's 100% safe, She’s an expert trader on stocks and bitcoin. I basically do nothing but collect profits, she was able to get me in early on most of these stocks and I exited just at the right time, her analysis was really on point
This woman is a badass
Karate Lebron lol
Queen of lazy
Karate Lebron well with cash you do anything in this world period but thats for select few that's it other than that she would sitting on dry lands bored out of her wits like me..lol
Karate Lebron .?????
wow what a great idea !!
Good for her. What a great way to end your days on a cruise ship rather than in some depressing retirement home.
She had about as much contact with family as some folks locked up in nursing homes. Oh the irony.
That is the definition of happiness for that lady. Doing what she wants and living her best life, good for her.
Good for her, it's up to her whatever she wants. So long as she is happy. All that matters.
God bless her, and all old ladies who get what they want out of life.
She needs to teach other older women not to care what world thinks of you because you have reached old age. Reach for those dreams as if you are still 25 years old. Man so glad to see a super senior who refused to fit into society's "old age mold" hopes she lives to be a 100+. Bless her always!!!
That is a good way to think.
@@tauceti3185 I agree. Society starts wanting to say a woman is old at 30.
lovelyvegan princess YUP @ AGE 35, A PREGNANT WOMAN IS CONSIDERED “ADVANCED MATERNAL AGE” AMA 🤦🏾♀️
@@LADYVIKING05 Yes. I know someone who is a pediatrician and she and her husband were going to have a baby when she was 38, and she said her doc told her she was advanced maternal age...she wasn't too thrilled with his statement. I mean, gosh, 38 is not 98.
This is what retirement should be about. Living how you want, where you want, for the rest of your existence. Good for her. She's doing what she loves and she's so honest about her reasoning. I think she's a badass great grandma.
I wish you long life, Lee.
My mom is a travel agent, and she went on that cruise line, and met her!
Equestrian Prep Lol I was waiting for a comment like that.
I've been on this cruise line a couple of times. Sweet lady
Equestrian Prep , Is she a nice person?.. LoLz
She is and donates alot to causes
@@katehamilton4345 She spends so much money on that cruise and still have money to donate? lol She's really rich then.
She looks great for 88 years old!
gamefish32 yea
Yes everybody would love to be on a cruise but what is the cost. Is the cabin close to the food courts or way down in the boiler room???
Norbert Jangula she pays $175,000 a year.... She's not staying in the bowels of the ship lol
Lady reporter: Where does she get her doctors appointments..
Man reporter: So far shes dancin
Me: wtf
Little does the lady reporter know is that cruise lines have a full medical staff on board. For serious injuries, they can have the patient airlifted.
Plus cruise ships usually go into ports multiple times every week. She can probably just walk into a clinic if she needed to.
That was a great question that kinda exposed a whole in the reporters story; that question shouldve been asked
Deena D not everyone needs doctor appointments, if you eat healthy and Exercise like dancing or walking around the ship. Google Dr Gundry A Heart surgeon that gives you advice on a healthy lifestyle. All about eating right.
@@tiffanyi5645 It was a good question. I think this feature was more of an "interest" piece though. They kept it lighthearted and superficial and purposely didn't delve into things like healthcare or safety. They weren't recommending people follow suit or explaining how it works in detail. I would like to know more, though.
Now she is the only passenger.
Happy 90th birthday! Hope you are doing well on the sea still!
That's one smart lady.
Jackie M For some people this can be wonderful. It wouldn't work for me because I would miss my grandson too much. My husband and I live in a duplex with my son and his wife. Our 10 year old grandson lives with my husband and me on our half of the duplex. I go ice and roller skating with him 3 or 4 times a week ( his parents aren't crazy enough to do it) so grandma stepped up to the plate. I love this kid! In July, we will have another grandchild and will find out if it is a boy or girl in two weeks. I am a night owl, so I will take care of the baby in the middle of the night. I love this kind of life, but it is not for everybody.
Lisa Baltzer
Lisa Baltzer Very true, although I'm not one to talk because I'm waay younger than you and I have no experience with having a kid and a grandkid. (obviously).
Alf Lowrey the 2
agree
If I had the money I would do the same thing because I love people and I love the water. Great for her.
Amazing! All the dancing is paying up for mama Lee. God bless the cruise ship serenity, captain and staff.
Hello Ana how're you doing?
Lee Wachtstetter is her name and as of March, 2019 she’s still crushing and got all her money. She even wrote a book!! Good for her :)
How does she pay it though?
@@lisakn27 ..She has millions, her deceased husband was very wealthy. :)
Small Fry all that money don’t prevent death.
@@back2the80s ..nothing prevents death...duh, we all know that silly.
Kacey - that’s really none of your business- it’s her life .....
When you’re so rich that you’re homeless.
ha, well said
Too Funny Traveel
When the ship goes down she better be ready!
Amazing! I love this life-style! Good for her!
OK until she needs 'care' - the staff may not be so keen to help her use the bathroom!
Im sure when she reaches that point she will leave the ship. But until then she is gonna enjoy it while it lasts
Not every person that is elderly "needs care". She may never need help using the bathroom etc.
and the staff seem to genuinely like her!
She is blessed to do this! Good for her. Wise way to spend her money, and she doesn't have to get off the ship to move to another ship! Terrific!
I was Recommended to this video amidst the Coronavirus Pandemic, RUclips knows how to place you in a awkward position. No Cruise ship for me from this day on
THIS LADY IS LIVING HER BEST LIFE.
Damn they can't give sis a discount
Michelle Denise Right!
They probably give her huge discounts. When you go on that many cruises, the rewards are insane
Jason Wilkins ~ Exactly! My friend gets insane discounts because of her cruising travels. She averages $300. for a 5-7 day cruise in a state room (not a inside cabin).
Michelle Denise they probably do but they don't tell nobody..lol
Michelle Denise I was going to say this😁
Fabulous! She seems very well mentally as well. It's really a great idea if you can afford it!
When she said that babies are good but then they grow up, I think she meant that kids lose interest in their parents and grandparents. They want to spend time with their FRIENDS. Then they get old enough to move away altogether if the parents are lucky.
This is absolutely amazing! I love this :)
How can close to a thousand people not like this enough to thumbs down :-(
Don’t be hating guys this woman raised her family and talks to them everyday ffs! Why should she sit in a retirement home if she can live in a cruise ship instead!!!
Down voting might be for changing the "you might like" type videos. Like when my nephew starts watching people scream while playing fortnight. It really messed with my suggested videos
She lost me when she referred to everyone as “the help” at 2:40
@Julia A prolly lonely at a guess compared to a cruise liner?
They never explained how she talks to her family every day. Ship to shore Canberra very expensive, another thing they did say is she cruises; I think Crystal is more expensive than most cruise lines.
Who cares... She doesn't. 🤷🏾♂️
"She has her opinions" I might have only worked in hospitality for a year but I'm pretty damn sure that translates into "she's a pain to look after".
LOL What a coincidence, I just wrote almost the exact same thing. I suspect she's high maintenance.
Jed Robertson lmao probably they they charge her almost 200K a year to live there
Just thinking that. Based on customer service experience
Jed Robertson You got that correct my friend.
Jed Robertson I work in hospitality too lol, and those were exactly my thoughts.
Now, she lives in the quarantine.
Greatest respect to this lady she's fantastic
Well she's enjoying her life, but I don't see why she's a heroine exactly. She's wealthy. She lives on a cruise ship. I'm happy for her. But why is she any more exalted than one of the many elderly who are making do? Those are the ones I'd like to hear about.
This is so badass. You couldn't get me on a cruise ship, but she's not terrified of cruise ships and she is basically a genius on this one. She looks amazing. It's like the boat is really hers and she just shares it with a bunch of people to make it more affordable!!
You should try a cruise, they are wonderful!
