The lyricist of Max Webster is Pye Dubois. Dubois co-wrote with Neil Peart , Tom Sawyer ! Dubois wrote the poem "There Is A Lake Between Sun And Moon", which inspired them to write many of the lyrics for the album Counterparts, including a song of the same name for which Dubois received co-writing credit. He is also credited as writer on the Rush songs "Force Ten" and "Test for Echo".

Comes the end of the concert and the lights go out. Everyone’s pretty wired and all are banging chairs and yelling for the encore. Then we heard this thunderous bass impact from the drums, much more than with Just Max’s drummer. Lights came on and Rush was onstage too, just for the encore. Note never listed on the bill Blew our minds. Thanks for the reminder. Listen to some more MW. Great channel. Thanks

Geddy Lee sings on this track, but the other singer and main lead guitarist is Kim Mitchell, a criminally underrated guitarist and songwriter. Max Webster released 4 fantastic albums before this one, my favourite being Mutiny Up My Sleeve. Kim Mitchell always wore funky outfits (at least while he was part of Webster), and the other guys in the band did as well.
Other amazing Max Webster songs are Waterline, Astonish Me, Gravity, Diamonds Diamonds, Oh War!, Distressed, Beyond the Moon, On the Road, In Context of the Moon, Paradise Skies, Research (At Beach Resorts) and Let Go the Line.

To add to what has been said about this song, Max Webster would play this song live when on tour and when the opened for Rush for the Canadian and part of the US tour when they played this song Neil would be warming up behind them and would play with them and nobody in the audience could hear he. Later that year when Max was at Phase One Studios to record there next album I think Kim maybe Terry said that they should ask Rush to play this song with them on the album. They all played together in the main studio with two drums set up Geddy and Alex on each end and Kim, Dave and Terry in between. All were mic'd up and recorded together with a few overdubs and vocals later. They never played the song together live to an audience but Alex did join Kim to play it once on Dec. 5, 2018. Thanks for reading all this I hope you enjoyed it.

I used to see Max Webster in bars all the time in the 70's. For a while, I considered leader/guitarist Kim Mitchell to be the best guitarist playing in Toronto bars. He didn't get much of a chance to show how good he was on this song. For a while, Max Webster used to open sets with Zappa's "Peaches en Regalia". After Max Webster, Mitchell toured with his own band, and for a while had his own radio program, where he would interview and jam with musicians.( Some of this is on Y.Tube). When I saw Allan Holdsworth, he was also in the audience. Also see RUclips channel Sea of Tranquility's Max Webster : Top 10 Songs video.

You've already got a comment from Kim Mitchell himself, who, as a kid from Scarborough, was one of my musical heroes and a HUGE part of every house party we threw ( or crashed ) and deserved, but unfortunately never got, the big US breakthrough that RUSH did, so I'm not sure what I can add other than a couple of interesting tidbits... like the fact that the crowd sound near the end of "Spirit of Radio" by Rush is actually a recording of a Max Webster live crowd, and, less interesting to you... and everybody else, but both RUSH and Max Webster actually played my high school when I was growing up. Uhhh, not at the same time, that would have been insane. So did Saga. And Goddo, and a few others you probably haven't heard of but who all made some incredibly good rock music in the late seventies and early eighties in this part of the world. But then I'm old and they were all young then... and I guess so was I.
You should look deeper into Max Webster... lots of good stuff there... even without RUSH on "backup", ;)

Max Webster used to open for Rush on a few tours, they're under the same management, and the origins of this song was a jam that Max Webster would play during soundcheck. Both bands agreed to create a full length song out of the original jam and this is the end result. This is a nice hidden gem as Rush never recorded any collaboration with other bands, other than this..They did have some epic soundcheck jams with Primus where everyone would play a different instrument than their main one.

  • @jhc2093

Max Webster was on the same label as Rush, Anthem Records, and both were managed by Ray Daniels, of SRO Entertainment. Both were Ray Daniels companies. As such, with Rush being Anthem’s largest act, Max Webster got the opening spots in select markets across a couple of tours. They became fast friends and as I seem to recall Battlescar was a sound check jam between the two bands. They all had so much fun they polished it a bit and decide to record it for Max Webster’s Universal Juveniles record. Geddy shows that while he was already beginning to tame his vocal register a bit, he still had it in him to pull out a 2112, A Farewell To Kings vocal when it was called for. Nick knew it was Geddy immediately and your faces in that moment of realization was PRICELESS!
As someone else mentioned. Listen to Take Off by Canadian comedians Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas.
Both were on the show SCTV. THINK Canadian Saturday Night Live. They created the characters, brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie. They released a comedy album on Rush’s record label Anthem and Geddy and Rick were friends. The song charted pretty high in the US which was pretty incredible because it’s really a novelty comedy song, but Rush were really hot at the time and Geddys appearance made the song a minor hit of sorts. It peaked in the top 20 and was in the hot 100 for nearly a month.

As soon as I saw the title of this video I wondered if you knew it was a collaboration with Rush. It took you about 2 seconds longer than I thought for you to figure it out lol. The 2nd Rush concert I ever went to was in 1977. The opening act was Max Webster, the special guest was UFO & Rush were the headliners. Paid $5 dollars for that f****** awesome concert. It really pisses me off how much concerts cost these days. Definitely got much more than my moneys worth that night. I think this tour (A Farewell to Kings tour) was the 1st that Rush was the headline act for the whole tour

There was a time when we Canadians considered Max Webster and Rush to be the best Canadian rock bands (1 and 1a). I saw Max at other venues and attended the 3 Rush Massey Hall shows, 1974, 1975, 1976. Max opened in '74 and '76 - they were amazing in both shows. I remember thinking after their opening set in '76, "Max just stole the show!" Rush debuted 2112 at that same show. How do you compete with that? You can hear it on "All The World's a Stage." If you haven't listened to Max Webster and Kim Mitchell, do yourself a favour - enjoy their fantastic music! Great memories. Jeez, I'm tearing up!

Rush and Max Webster both came up in the Toronto scene. Max Webster often opened up for Rush on their tours up to about 1980 and I saw many many of those shows as I grew up in Ottawa. To simulate such a show in that period Listen to Max's "Live Magnetic Air" followed by " Exit Stage Left".
For a pure Max hit try "Oh War" or "High Class In Borrowed Shoes".
Also check out Kim Mitchell's solo work. He was the guitar player and main singer and also co-wrote much of the music. "Go For A Soda" is a classic.

OMG! The look on Nick’s face when that patented Neil drum fill comes in. That cracked me up.
Rush and Max Webster were inseparable touring mates for years. My very first time seeing Rush live was also my introduction to Max. They blew me away and I became a life long fan.
Despite the fact that the 2 bands toured together constantly (and no doubt fed off each other artistically), this song was their one and only collaboration.
This was also Max Webster’s last album. After this, lead vocalist/guitarist Kim Mitchell went solo.
Just as an aside, I studied under Jack Richardson in college. He was the producer on this album and it was his idea to bring these 2 bands together in the studio. And many fans of both bands are eternally grateful for it.
IMHO, Kim was just as good a guitarist as Alex. That, and the fact that they spent so much time listening to each other on tour, is why they blend together so well here.
For us Canadians, Rush and Max Webster are synonymous. Hope this inspires you to check out some more Max.

Pye Dubois gave Rush the lyrics to one of their songs they were going to use( but didn't) and the song that resulted from it was Tom Sawyer.

Thank you Reed I’ve been waiting a long time for this reaction. So glad they were unaware before they listened.Their reaction was priceless. As mentioned in other comments Max Webster used to open for Rush for many years. Max Webster with lead man Kim Mitchell (a highly under rated guitar player) went on to produce some great albums from the late 70s into the 80s. Kim’s solo hit Go For a Soda, got him on charts from Canada and into the US.I’ve seen him both in Ontario and in the Buffalo Niagara area, he really puts on a great show. Definitely would request you to play some more Max Webster if I may suggest anything of the Mutiny up my Sleeve album perhaps the track Distressed, Astonish Me, or the incredible guitar work on Beyond the Moon. You guys are awesome, keep it coming there’s so much more to enjoy.
