I love when Geddy sings "lose the race to rats, get caught in ticking traps" as Neil Peart is ticking the snare drum. Lots of subtle "word painting" in Rush.
the lyrics are so important to this song....read them afterwards
This. Can’t stress that point enough. Peart was an exceptional lyricist and the words and feelings are so universal as far as what Baby Boomers and Gen Xers experienced. I’d include the early Millennials as well.
I agree. Lyrics are half the experience with Rush. When you listen to the lyrics and the music you can hear the connection and the superb songwriting it took to create the complete song.
I understand that there is too much to absorb it all on a first listen, and they have made it known that they will really only listen to the music. I remember I would put on a new record and would read the lyrics on the sleeve or cover as the song played. There are songs that convey a story without lyrics, but if they are there, it usually has the message and meaning that the artist is trying to convey. Just listening to the music is so shallow.
When were they not with Peart? Btw, I recommend his books as well. Such a great writer and human being.
@@TheAsphyx666 I still refuse to believe he is gone.... just flat out refuse ='(
Signals is not only my favorite RUSH album, it is my favorite album PERIOD !!! I have over 2500 albums in my collection, and Signals will ALWAYS be my #1 !!! Love seeing your discovery of this amazing band ❤
Me too it’s my favorite album from Rush ans it’s from this album that I saw them live in Montreal in 1983. Was amazing.
Hope you have some TooL in your collection.
Personally, Grace Under Pressure. I love Subdivisions and Countdown, .
There are big-time truth drops in the lyrics if you're into "conspiracy theories" too.
Rush is so unique and I'm a goth post punk, and new wave fan, but rush is on a different level, their so unique.
"Any escape might help disprove
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth"....
This song alone could have been the soundtrack of the teen years for so many, including me.
Or any of us old farts after having lived the rush and tumble of city life... craving for some calm, some order... this song's lyrics are absolutely masterful.
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory
Of lighted streets on quiet nights
Conform or be cast out.
As a teenager I loved that but now I prefer this verse:
"Well some will sell their dreams for small desires,
And lose their race to rats; Get caught in ticking traps,
And start to dream of somewhere to relax their restless flight;
Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights."
I love the expressiveness in Geddy's voice.
@@mycroft16 As a girl that grew up in the city (long ago 😉) I got married and moved to the suburbs raised my kids and now live in a rural area. I indeed relaxed my restless flight. 🐦🕊
THE WHOLE "SIGNALS " ALBUM IS JUST EPIC
It's very good, just wish it would have been produced with a cleaner, more dynamic GUP type sound.
@@primemover1416 I agree but even that doesn't obscure how good the music is.
whole catalog ♫
I am reading Martin Popoff's Rush In The '80s book...and listening to those albums while doing so. I am digging on SIGNALS so much...Rush talks about The Police-influence. They come avross like The Police on 'roids. "Analog Kid" & " Digital Man"!
This particular song is very personal to me as I can relate to that misfit mentioned in the song.
Robert, I think it really resonated with any misunderstood youth or fringe dweller on the outside of the in-group. I grew up in a Canadian suburb of largely cookie-cutter homes in the 70s, played those arcade games, and had no car of my own. The lyrics and yearning tone of the guitar solo encapsulated a generation of North American youth.
It's very personal to many of us for the same reason. Being a misfit made me stronger.
I think the term you’re looking for is the drum “fill” or “roll” on the drums and you’re right, Neil never plays the same fill twice. Not only is every fill unique, but Geddy always plays a bass riff that is complimentary to the fill. These are things you may not notice at first, but the more you listen to their music the more unique things you discover.
This is why their music doesn’t wear out on you as fast as many songs that are more repetitious. Neil and Geddy really work a lot on the rhythm segment of every song which really gives Alex the freedom to express his guitar parts, not worrying that his guitar needs to be there for the rhythm guitar segments.
Most bands with a single guitarist have to be careful when the guitar drops out to play a solo because the loss of the rhythm strumming of the guitar can create a vacuum in the music when the guitar is suddenly not there anymore.
That is not a problem with Rush, because Geddy and Neil sound like a full band on their own, which is not something every bass and drummer can do. That is one of the reasons that they sound so full for a 3 piece band, even back before they added the keyboards and synthesizers.
The addition of new layers of music with synths, samples and all of Neil percussion pieces just filled the sound out more and more until they sounded like an orchestra on some songs, especially around the time of “Power Windows”. A song like “Manhattan Project” sounds as if there is an entire orchestra in parts, even though I saw them perform it live with just the three of them and it sounded the same as the studio album track.
Moving Pictures captured my attention but I was just too young to grasp anything other than I liked the sound. Signals, and particularly this song, spoke to me. Subdivisions really felt like an interpretation of what I felt my life was at the time. I don’t think Signals is their best work, but it will always be my favorite. Thank you for enjoying this with us. And Nick: shhh 🤫
Once again Rush proves how their songs sound as relevant today as they did back in 1982. So nice to see a couple share their enthusiasm and appreciation of Rush together.
As a kid who graduated from high school in '87 and wasn't part of the "in" crowd, I related with this song big-time. Thank you Rush.
Same here man
85.. same
This song is a one-of-a-kind experience simply because the synthesizer begins and maintains the general rhythm instead of the lead guitar or any other instrument. Even more, this piece features lyrics that describe a reality that kids at the time would have been exposed to. I was on my way to LAX in 1981 bound for a trip to Tampa, Florida, when I first heard 'Subdivisions.' But I was especially "mind-jolted" when I heard the lyrics as the song played on the radio! Well done Nick n Lex!
As I have said to other reactors, this song hit me, because I was one of those kids in school.. Smart, shy, awkward, huge pressure on me to excel in school, just like the kid in the video who was bullied in school, always by himself, and trying to find solace in video games. That was me completely.
Thank you for sharing!
Couldn't agree more! Tom Sawyer and Moving Pictures may have been the be all and end all as far as "old school" Rush fans are concerned, but Signals (and Subdivisions specifically) created Rush fans (like me) that stuck with the band all the way through Clockwork Angels, and who did not differentiate between Pre-Signals and Post-Signals Rush's greatness.
Thank you for your reaction. I was the awkward, nerdy kid in the video. This song brings back so many memories of high school in the mid 1980's. Some good, some bad.....
You just need to see a picture of Geddy and Alex from high school and tell that they were the guy in this story.
I don’t know if I’ve seen any pictures of Neil from that awkward age, but just knowing that he was that geek always reading books in his spare time, it’s not hard to see him as one outcast or even picked on.
signals is a great album, lots of energy; check out the second track, The Analog Kid, think you'll like it a lot
The solo is a scorcher!!!
@@dan2007kohn yeah, Alex kills it !!!!!
🙋🏿♀️ 2nd Analog Kid 😁🐰
Also Digital man is great
Great album for me too. It was the first Rush album I ever bought!
As many times as I've heard this song, I STILL get chills when I hear "subdivisions". Neil always used multi-syllabic words in his lyrics. He challenged us to be greater than the sum of our earthly parts, while always laying down a monster groove! And then there's Geddy and Alex.
Its actually neil who says subdivisions
@@PCnineball2333 The official video appears to show Alex saying “subdivisions”. You can see how one might assume it was his voice on the track. I stand corrected.
Rush the greatest rock band of all time!!
Absolutely
Brutal
Truth ^^^
Without a doubt.
Thanks for the RUSH! "Analog Kid" from the same album is a song you will definitely want to hear!☮☮☮.
My favorite Rush song!!
I think “Countdown” is the real sleeper on the album, but for someone who didn’t grow up in that time it most likely won’t have the same meaning. We’re just not explorers any more.
Fall of 82 was when this album came out
@@NH2112 Countdown is fantastic!
AND Digital Man!
2 very awesome 80's Rush songs are Marathon from Power Windows and Turn The Page from Hold Your Fire.
Middletown dreams and between the wheels are also great eighties songs
Totally agree! Time Stand Still is also a masterpiece; a great merger of amazing music and thought-provoking lyrics.
For those records, I'd go with the VERY underrated Emotion Detector from PWin and Prime Mover from HYF.
Marathon is a favorite!!!
All of the songs you people have mentioned here are great songs. With Rush, they make it hard to pick a favorite. Any one of the songs mentioned here could top someone’s favorite song and be a good choice!
Tom Sawyer reeled me in......this song spoke to me on a deep personal level and solidified my love of this band.
I hated high school and most of the people in it because I didn't fit in anywhere! I took that anger at the whole joke of a system that I saw as the American educational system and internalized it. I became very antisocial.
This song showed me that I was not alone in those feelings and it was and has been very cathartic for me.
God blessed us with RUSH and God bless you two! I love you both!
my favorite Rush song. This song just has something else in it.
It’s okay that you don’t want to stop talking about RUSH. That’s exactly how we lifelong devotees feel. We get together and do NOTHING but listen to, watch & talk about our 3 boyyz. To US they mean EVERYTHING!!!
Welcome to our universe.
RUSHAHOLICS HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL!!!
You have that right, Lisa :D
Exactly we must spread the rush that was my job as a fan to spread there music to who would ever listen! Call the radio play it loud in my car windows down! It was a moral imperative.
"Mystic Rhythms" off of their Power Windows album. Prepare for death-by-'80s
Probably my favorite song off of that album.
...checking it out now. Peart's then-recent visit to China is apparent with Geddy's keyboards. Some of the instrumental sections remind me of the '80s British bands...like The Fixx. Cool stuff.
An absolute favorite of mine
Subdivisions is a Prog gem . Rush are giants. Nick i totally agree with you , when you listen music quality like that , lyrics come second anytime
This is all time great stuff from Rush. The music alone is great, but the LYRICS are for me the beautiful icing on the cake. They resonate so hard for so many of us. These guys deserved every bit of success they had, they totally earned it.
RUSH “Signals” and VAN HALEN “Diver Down” were a huge part of my first year of college experience. (1982-83)
I was at the signals concert then. LOL
Neil's grooves that he puts together are super unique. I feel like he starts with a simpler version of the groove and then builds on it throughout the production, adding offbeat snare strikes and such as he moves through the song. So freaking good. As a drummer I spent a lot of time trying to learn his fills and grooves, but always in the back of my mind wondered how wonderful it must have been to create like that.
I echo much of what others have said. The thing that makes Rush so special is that Neil Peart was the master lyricist of our age. He wrote relatable, moving songs about things that are real. Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, and so much more. And of course Subdivisions.
Oh and take note of the fact that Neil composed multiple completely distinct drum parts for each of the verse sections. In that they are distinct, they also build the tension throughout the verses. A true masterpiece of drum composition.
I love the captions, Lex! Nick was overwhelmed and no, he isn't quite done expressing his feelings. Fun viewing to a great reaction, song, and group.
Subdivisions... love so many of their songs yet for some reason the music, feel of this one always moved me emotionally. Never tire of it.
I feel the same way about it!! 💕
You will be blown away by the Necromancer. The lyrics and the insane riff by Alex.Love you guys
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. i love how you two truly appreciate good music.
It's been almost 40 years since this song came out and every time I hear it I pick out something new that I didn't before. Suggest The Camera Eye, it's epic. Love the channel.
Made me laugh. This is what it means "the two shall become one flesh".
This is the song that set it all off for me back in 1983 and changed my life.
Subdivisions is a phenomenal Rush song which is universally understood by us all as young adults trying to fit in. A recommendation for something which I believe you both might enjoy is Genesis, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight and most everything from any of their works in which Peter Gabriel was the Vocalist in the band.. You will not regret it...
Lyrics, lyrics, lyrics.
Go back and read them after listening. Reading the lyrics is integral to "appreciate" any of their songs.
It's the underground water of life that gives real life to their music.
If they are reacting to rush and its not a live video they should only do lyric versions
@PROG ROCK 1979, provided the lyrics are correct! 😊
It’s my favorite Rush song! I love the way he says the word “subdivisions”
I was born in the 60s; so I’ve been blessed to see all their albums come out. Especially as a drummer.
Class of '82 - we really did not realize the greatness we were listening to. We just knew it was amazing. Now 40 years later, I listen to the subtle musical gems. But for all that. it is just as amazing at 58 as it was at 18.
Rush definitely had at least four distinct periods, sounds, styles what have you. Tough enough for any band to break big once. Rush did it four times and were commercially successful through nearly all of them. They did it there way. Many fans came in and out of the fold over those years, but there was a core of fans, numbering in the millions that kept it going, kept them viable, kept them rocking. Love you guys and your reactions. Rush is an incredible rabbit hole. Enjoy the ride and we’ll be along for it!
I can see him. He is almost in tears. I love that kind of reaction!!! No words needed.
Greatest song of all-time IMO. I don't care if it makes any lists or not.
Rush ByTor and The Snowdog from Fly By Night is awesome also
By-Tor is INCREDIBLE!!
By-Tor / Xanadu/ and La Villa Strangiato are my pre- 80s holy trinity
By-Tor is the song that got me hooked on Rush!
I had the privilege of seeing them do 'Bytor and the Snowdog' live a couple of times back in the '70s. Great tune. NicknLex - you gotta listen to this one!
There are more of us that feel the way Nick does ! Rush was able to tap into a feeling that was very common with young people ! It feels like a way to let those feelings out !
Agree - "Losing It" is superlative. Listen to that next and bring tissues. Tears will be flowing.
... what can you say?
RUSH is RUSH... AMAZING BAND!
I love that you're such a sensitive guy Nick!
Keep them coming!
Regards,
ALinCAL
Probably the first Rush song i've heard, and it changed everything on me, when i was 15, in 1983. The number one song of my life, I dare say.
I saw RUSH on the European leg of this tour (1983) three times, & I still have two of the tour T-shirts - one of which is hanging by a thread, now. Thirty eight years later, & it's still one of my favourites - frankly, it never gets old. Glad you continue to enjoy the RUSH legacy !! :D
I was in high school - had a lot of friends but wasn’t one of the “In” crowd. Friends with a lot of the “losers” also!
The thing is losers can have many different reasons of being considered a loser , With the members of the band they were considered out cast because they were in their own world playing music , Alex and Geddy talked about it they were not into sports and hanging with that crowd , they were more into just hanging out listening to records and playing music ,
Nick -- don't apologize! :-) You're helping all of us who have been listening to this music for decades to reconnect to it in a fresh way. I really appreciate you both. Now I gotta find the documentary you're talking about...
NVM, just found it -- the nearly 4 hour video
This song was an anthem of my teenage life, especially since I was about 16 when it came out. So awesome.
"Witch hunt" was written by Neil in 1981, but after the events of January 6, 2021, I feel it is so relevant today!
Ditto!
Rush music deserves listening to the music AND the lyrics. They go together to equal pure genius.
This is a man's thing once you're hooked with rush you want to give an speech about them that's the Rush Effect saludos desde la CDMX Rush fan desde 1983
this music, means so much to me. I totally connect with this. everytime i listen, i became emotional.
My 2nd favorite Rush song of all time but please do Rush “Bravado”
Great song!!!
My favourite Rush song
Love the outro on the live version.
You both are awesome. Glad you like Rush. There was really no better experience than seeing them in the front row of a concert. Total mind blowing and exhausting air drumming every song.
LOVE RUSH too thank you for your peaceful reactions,,,so full of discovery and appreciation....Thank you
One of a few Rush songs that bring a tear to my eye.
My favorite of rush for me
is this one. I can hear it 1000,000. Not get tired.
in the video
I noticed that the streets are alone.. with no one and in the high School Halls, shopping malls are full of people I guess that's what they're trying to show that there's no kids playing on streets there's something deep about it. maybe in their childhoods in the 60s they will play more on the streets and
these times they don't find no fun anymore playing outside. Strong message.today kid on the video games final essenes of the Music video. Streets alone.
This is my favorite Rush song! It's so cool to see you experience it for the first time!
Like you two, when I first listened to Rush, a long time ago, I loved the music. But once I started reading the lyrics to go along with the great music, my appreciation went to another level. This song is one of many with great, thoughtful lyrics.
I saw an interview where they had a clip from the crazy standing ovation that they got when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What was unique about the clip was that it was the first time you got to see the focus being on the audience and it was Neil's dad that was first to stand up in the entire crowd quickly followed by Alex's and Geddy's moms (they put labelled arrows above the heads of the parents as it was too far away to make them out). It made me think of that clip of Alex trying to convince his parents as a teenager that he was going to pursue music and all those years later she was leading the incredible ovation that the band received.
If you haven't seen the clip it is here (ruclips.net/video/IK6dS15hq24/видео.html). What is ironic about the clip is Jann Wenner who is the Editor of Rolling Stone magazine is the one making the introduction and Rolling Stone has always been one of the harshest critics of Rush. It wasn't lost on the fans of Rush in attendance that Jann Wenner had to finally give the band their due and that ovation I think was their opportunity to let him know what they thought of his criticism. Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters who inducted them into the Hall of Fame later in the show said this in his speech...
"Playing upwards of 250 shows a year the band built its following the right way. No hype... no bullshit; they did it from the ground up without any help from the mainstream press (and then pretending to cough he blurted out "ROLLING STONE").
He did this knowing full well who was the master of ceremonies.
I grew up in the actual subdivisions, in Rush's home town, this song was written from. 16 at the time it came out. Real.
Impressive how 3 gifted artists can produce so much music in one performance. This song touched so many and helped show them they were not alone.
This was the "new" Rush album when I discovered Rush in high school. Been a massive fan since hearing Spirit of Radio on the radio in art class.
I have been a RUSH fan 40 yrs Signals is my Fave album. Glad you are enjoying Rush.
You know how much you love the music, the lyrics are that good too!!
This song is what got me into Rush, always felt like an outcast in High School in the 80's and this helped me make it through
This period divided a lot of Rush fans. I appreciate that they tried some different things in the ‘80’s
This is my 1st time watching you guys . . .
And I like your pic “brother”. Thumbs up
@@thecolourhurts - Haha, I've seen a few of "us" out there :D.
"We have assumed control"!
This is THE SONG that made me a Rush fan for LIFE!!
Great to see fabulously crafted music and songs will bring you to tears! Tears from the brilliance of the work of art.
I'm watching this reaction video for the tenth time, and it is just so much fun watching Nick get so emotional over revelations he's having then, and your (Lex) side comments are hilarious, just love to watch you two kids enjoy tunes
I truly appreciate your fondness of the classics of my youth. There are so many rabbit holes that are there to explore. I enjoy your enthusiasm and quirkiness. Thank you for what you do.
Thank you for taking the time and for your kind comment! We truly are enjoying this so much and we love and appreciate support like yours! :) - Lex
This many years later that song is so incredible it brings tears to my eyes.
Timeless. Rush FOREVER!! RIP PROFESSOR.
You guys get it! You feel the same way I feel evertime I listen to Rush, Happy! If im ever down, having a bad day, etc. I put on some Rush and I instantly transform myself to a good place. Rush has gotten me through alot in my life and they'll never let you down.
What a great reaction. For me, even though I have been listening to Rush since 1976, watching and listening to your reactions helps me relive the music and remember what it was like hearing it for the first time. 2112 was my introduction and I never looked back but I my interest did slow down a bit in the mid 80s but I eventually grew to love it all. I am so glad I got to see them live, the first time was during the Farewell to Kings tour.
Runs, fills, flams... lots of terms for what Neil is doing throughout this song. You can see why he was such an inspiration for so many young, aspiring drummers (Mike Portnoy, etc.) It's worth finding a good drum cover of this song to get a close-up view of the entire drum part. It's wild!
If this is your fave album, then it's most likely the soundtrack of your high school years. Love this album so much.
When they performed this live, they usually used more of a sawtooth sounding synth and it always sounded awesome. At high volume those synth sounds are just so thick.
You guys have to watch the official video of the song. Rush are artists, so when they made this song, the music, video and lyrics all form a painting. A framing of young life in the suburbs and the stress of growing up in a society that pushed you to “comform or be cast out”. Please in your free time check the official video. Stay safe!!
Peart and that "connection" he has with the bell area of the ride cymbals just FLOORS me every time! I have been listening to Rush for over 30 years now too!
Rush 3 musicians that could sound like a full symphony together in what they brought in sound
I mean these guys are so fantastic. How incredible is it that they can write this music with these lyrics combined with this musicianship? It's just amazing that these three special guys did this for 45 years...created a completely unique sound that had not been before and has not been since... simply incredible.
Great song, one of my favorite RUSH tunes!
Rush was never concerned with what people thought of their music. They made what they wanted to unapologetically. Not afraid to be influenced by other types of music.
Please react to Headlong Flight from their final record Clockwork Angeles. As a 40 year seasoned fan I promise you will not be disappointed.
❤️ you guys!
Thanks for your suggestion and support! :) - Lex
They have been releasing albums for a long time, so many good albums and songs to choose from
Let me just state the fact that I am so happy that you two are past the border ! America is a better place with you all ! Keep doing what you do !
It’s such a simple guitar solo, probably his simplest, but it is sooo expressive. Lots of whammy bar vibrato, harmonics, and the triple stops at the end is something not a lot of players put in a solo. I like to listen to the isolated parts off of RUclips
What a wonderful, soulful guitarist Lerxst was over decades.
I drove from NH toWI a couple of years ago and decided to go through Canada so I could see LeStudio in Quebec where this was recorded. The studio is abandoned now, but there is a life-size statue of the Dalmation and fire hydrant in the front driveway. That was cool.
Seeing it Live in concert....a totally different experience...especially the Signals tour....Lucky to have seen them live from Signals to R40....only missed Roll Bones tour...was in Japan then....
Rush Spirit of Radio.Tempo changes out the ass.A killer song.
Tears are a common reaction to RUSH . Like a commet that orbits the earth every 10,000 years , they have come , shone their brilliance , and now gone . Just be happy we were here to see the show . RUSH forever !!
Geddy's keyboards on this are so awesome.
It was fun watching you guys do this one and The Camera Eye. I know what you mean, Nick. I hear words as musical notes along with all the notes from the instruments that create a masterpiece like this. It's after a time I want to read along and focus more on the message. Speaking of which I have a challenge for you. See if you can keep FROM following the lyrical messages in these from Power Windows: The Big Money, Manhattan Project and Territories. Especially the first two. Geddy Lee sings so distinctly in these it's rather difficult NOT to follow the lyrics! LOL! So I totally relate to you Lex on these. And you're right lyrics are important which I'm sure you will enjoy these, and worth adding to your already awesome video library. Manhattan in particular involves 1940s history, and Big Money/Territories kinda speak for themselves. ✌️😎
I saw Rush live on their Signals tour in December 82...it was awesome
This just an amazing piece!!!!!! Never loses it's spark you ready!! It is all about the subdivisions we live in , in Toronto. houses all the same cookie cutter. How they felt when they started the band. Just great !!!!! We love our Canadian boys.
Rush gave us a gift that keeps on giving!
