I am really hoping to get into SERE, but my recruiter is an hour and a half away and seems to always be busy or not available to talk and/or text. I am trying to figure out what I need to do in order to enlist and what I need to be prepared for. I'm pretty deadset on getting SERE, so if it is available, I want to be ready
For someone who is in the Air National Guard. How long is the pipeline? Are we stationed at Fairchild for approximately 1 year then return to our base of enlistment. I am a SSgt who is deployed and am highly interested in joining the career field. A past test is no problem and I have 3 years retain ability with the AF.
The PAST (entry test taken before basic) used to have a swimming portion but has since been removed. It is still highly recommended that you have good swimming skills before entering into the pipeline. The requirements used to be two 25 meter (half a lap) under water in one breath and then a 500 meter swim (5 laps down, 5 laps back) in 15 mins. There will be a lot of swimming in the pipeline and while not required to test in it would be good to try and meet close to these numbers before entry to make your life easier.
what happens if you fail the 15 day sere test? do you get recycled or does your recruiter ask you to pick a different job? and how many females have made it all the way through?
When i went through, i think you were given one "recycle." Maybe two if one was medical. If you didn't make it on your second attempt you were rolled into another career-field.
No, i was 20/200 when i went through, correctable to 20/20. I'm not sure if laser surgery would be a disqualification. It's possible because of the Airborne component of the career.
SOWT was recently changed in name and instruction. They are now SR (Special Reconnaissance) They are still weathermen, somewhat, but they undergo much more training, and rigorous training at that. They go to jump school and the whole works. Look up the SR pipeline on the AF website.
They don't operate "downrange" they do however appear to go and help set up plans, for bases and small stations that US citizens and military people work at, that help them evacuate and safely leave the area, assess possible threats to security of areas, and train people SERE tactics in case SHTF.
This program is no walk in the park for anyone who decides to attempt, however the standards are the same for men and women. I was Active Duty SERE until 2014. If you're able to adequately surpass the physical standards, you may be okay. You're average day in the woods will be packing anywhere from 50ish to 100ibs up and down decent mountains.
Just what Jake said down below. The standards for the females and males are the same. The difficulty of the training will depend on what knowledge you have beforehand, your level of physical fitness, your mental fortitude and other factors; however overall the training is considered hard. Hence why many try out but few graduate. There have been females who have graduated the training. After I graduated back in 2007, there has been 4 females since to make it. It is absolutely possible but you have to be willing to put in a lot of work and crush the training just as good as the rest of your teammates.
To anyone that answers, (I saw some pretty knowledgeable people in the comments), I’m coming from Army infantry Recon and about to try and switch to the AF for this job. I’m not worried yet about the selection (25 meter target first) but would they take a branch switch over if they qualify? I’ve heard rumors of the Air Force only taking fresh civies. Any answer will help.
Following... Same situation here bud... Got my e5 recently and looking at my 6 in maybe another 18 months. E5 to e4 isnt really appealing but for the job of my dreams I might do it. But E6 to E4 or possibly E3... idk if I can do that.
As a SERE Instructor do you have to do parachuting? Not sure if that's mandatory for all or more specialized in SERE. I'm very interested in SERE, but I'm just a little hung up on the jumping out of planes aspect.
Same age as across the board for AF max 39 years of age. have you pulled the trigger on any reenlistment with the AF, if so, what career path did you choose?

I believe 3 in total have made it (but I'm not completely sure.) It's however not an impossible feat if you do plan on going this route. And go into everything they make you do without doubt that you'll make it. Nothing they make you do is impossible. That same concept goes for PJ indoc, etc.
First of all, asking questions about failing certain portions doesn't set you up for success, it sets you up for failure. If you fail something, expect the worst. As for as females, many have made it through and I'm sure I could find out the exact number for you but at the end of the day, it's just a number. Veni Vidi Amavi I’ve been debating Natl guard vs full time as well.
Very thankful for this information!
So what I got from this was that SERE is instructor heavy.
From what I’ve read the instructors are fantastic and sere training is the most dense school
I became certified as a private sector instructor from a retired sere instructor......

do you get selected if you finish the 15 days and pass the tests, or can you pass all of the tests and not quit and still not get selected?
If you do really well chances are you’ll get selected. The only reason I could see that happening is if the cadre hate your personality.
