Beautiful demonstration. Thanks. I have a question about the paper she uses. Is it rice paper? And she uses minimum amounts of water in the brush so that it won't affect the paper from becoming wavy? Also, is the cloth underneath for absorbing moisture? Thanks
Thank you for your comment and question Ingrid. Yes she is using rice paper. It is a single xuan (shuen) paper that we sell as OAS Practice Xuan (Shuen). This paper shows excellent color vibrancy, variation, and velvety. It is one of our more moisture sensitive papers but compared to single xuan papers from other suppliers, it is more forgiving with excess moisture. The felt underneath does absorb excess moisture so it prevents the paper from sticking to a harder, less absorbent surface like the table underneath. She does do certain techniques to limit the amount moisture on the brush. First she starts with a totally dry brush by squeezing the brush with her fingers or stroking the brush against a paper towel. Then she intentionally loads some water as a color but only on the tip of the brush. Then she loads other colors from light to dark with each color being loaded closer to the very tip of the brush. Finally she does the stroke decisively so as to prevent excess water from flowing from the brush into the paper.
