you didn't mention that layered zirconia is more prone to chipping than any other crowns because the layering porcelain is a single phase glass matrix whereas layering ceramics for vmk's and emax are 2 phase ( lucite or fluorapatite for vmk and nano fluorapatite for emax), this means they have other crystals in their make up which inhibits crack propagation...zirconia tends to "egg shell "once a crack starts...

Hello doctor, Can you please give me advise? A few days ago my upper molar was pulled out and near to this tooth I have a tooth with a zirconium crown. When I looked in mirror I found out that front part of this crown on side of my lips which used to be smooth now only has 1/3 of tooth smooth and seems like 2 millimeters thickness of my crown seems to be gone now. So I don't know what to do; is it possible to polish this crown to make smooth again? Or do I have to remove this crown? My tooth under this crown had a root canal and I hear that removing this crown is very difficult and can sometimes damage the tooth; is this correct?

Solid zirconia crown was put on my two upper molar teeth and on opposite implant, now i developed a lot of low jaw pain. Zirconia strong and very hard on opposite teeth. I would like to remove this crowns but I hear it is very difficult and can damage teeth. and implant. I do not knew what to do. Pain is terrible, can not sleep anymore. Wish i never put zirconium crown.

@Harmony Steward Thankyou for your information on zirconia crowns. Sorry for your situation, I hope my note finds you in better health. I was contemplating zirconia crowns install right upper jaw, 2 premolars & 2 molars. After reading your statement, & the person you replied too who is also suffering health issues, suspect zirconia related problems, I will go with gold crowns. Hi from Queensland, Australia.

Zirconium is a metal. Gingival recession has little to do with what type of material your dentist (and you) choose for the indirect restoration: it largely depends on how the preparation has been done on the tooth to accommodate the crown. If the so called "biological width" within the periodontal tissues is invaded by the restoration margins you'll have a chronic inflammation which will eventually lead to recession (unless your bio-type is "thick"). I'm a dentist.

Zirconia is in fact a metal - " a lustrous, grey-white, strong transition METAL that closely resembles hafnium and, to a lesser extent, titanium"

my dentist made me a beautiful zirconia lava crown. i hope it lasts for a while. it looks like a real tooth. i hate porcelain because it’s so white and opaque and i hate giants composite veneers. luckily my front teeth are healthy no cavities lol 😮‍💨🙈

Same here..I’ve had porcelain crowns on my front teeth since I was 15 and never liked them because they didn’t match the natural color of my teeth..And on top of that, I had to get them done twice since something went wrong with the first ones 😕
