I am looking into it atm and this scores about 10 more fps at 1440p. So potentially I can use Thunderbolt to hook my laptop to a 1440p 144hz monitor. So it definitely has an advantage.
I have literally no idea what ive done wrong.. I installed my graphics amplifier as the videos show.. downloaded drivers to date.. I have the 970 gtx GeForce.. Now I am sitting here on my brand new laptop trying to play witcher 3 that I just purchased and every 30 mins to an hour the game freezes and I get spammed with a message saying "game blocked from accessing graphics hardware." I tried doing a restart after a million trys of making sure my drivers were up to date and everything was connected correctly and then the box that my amplifier is in.. the fan started to make a really loud blowing noise. Way louder than normal.. I have it opened up and I cant see anything ive done wrong. I just bought this computer and all of this new stuff and I cannot begin to explain how upset I am that I cant get this to work. I could really use some knowledge because I don't have it.

I have a question and cant find anywhere to ask for help about the graphics amplifier. My 15 R2 comes with a nvidia gtx 970m. I bought an alienware graphics amplifier with an AMD rx 480 (because that's all I could afford with my discount). If I install the AMD drivers while I still have my nvidia drivers installed, will they conflict even though the nvidia side is disabled because of the graphics amplifier or how does that work?
Once you connect the Graphics Amplifier and restart your computer, it will take over and run the Radeon card as the primary graphics processor. So it won't cause any conflict what so ever.

It's now 2021, will there be an update to the Alienware Graphics Amplifier soon? New graphics cards do not fit in the Alienware Graphics Amplifier released in 2014. I currently have an Alienware 15 R3 from 2017 with an i7-7700HQ CPU, 32GB of DDR4 2400Mhz RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 with 8GB GDDR5 Graphics card. I will want to get an NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3090 later this year, but apparently, they don't fit.

Why did Alienware decide to put a sub-par fan and mediocre PSU in the amplifier? The fan is unnecessarily loud and the point where people are swapping them out. The stock fan is so loud that others can hear it over the mic while gaming. Is Alienware addressing this problem? Also, the PSU...you really couldn't find a black one to match system? I know it is cosmetic, but we are enthusiasts after all :-)
A very nice setup! But I had that idea for over five years now but this was the twist to it, which also came with the Nvidia Shied in the form of streaming of games and also in Steams's stream which will come out in big picture mode but my idea was like this use a system like the integrated graphic on the high end laptops or the same Alienware Alpha or the same out of the box graphic which( I love )to be use on a tablet like the new iPad or a nice resolution tablet as the screen and gaming platform. Hey AW, I just got my 13 today, and I connected the Graphics Amplifier with a 780ti - connection is great - but the fan is running full blast and boring a hole through my ear canals, even when theres nothing gothing on. Please tell me theres a place to control the speed of the fan on the Amp before I through it out of the window! Its loud enough to be heard in a room nearly 40 feet away - the card is idling.
Colin Kirkley Hi Colin. You could shutdown and disconnect all the cables for 2 minutes. Then reconnect and test again. Make sure you are using the drivers from our website exclusively.

Actually yes! A hybrid 1080 was fitted on the amp so 980 ti should too. However not sure about that fan replace.. But you can put the radiator inside the amp! It even has air space for it.

Rocky Enciso No it doesn't, the internal GPU will turn off when you are using the external one. This is due to the screen been able to receive only one signal at a time.

Whenever you connect the Graphics Amplifier, the desktop card takes over and is the only one being used. Dividing the tasks for each video card as you ask, is impossible.
Alienware can you guys please add A Configuration of the 13 with the 900series card or the amd r9 295 Since the 15,17 already have them I do not know why 13 is still running with the older 860m

The Alienware Graphics Amplifer is sold stand-alone. That way pre-owned Graphics Cards could be used. We also wanted to give our buyers the liberty of picking a card that suited their needs.

because this totally hasnt been tried before with the acer ferrari one, it was such a good idea but you could never buy the external box, it flopped before it went anywhere, since alienware is actually pushing this i expect that it will get somewhere but it wont stay, with the prices of these things its cheaper to buy a custom desktop and laptop

No, if you connect a video card to the Graphics Amplifier it will give priority to that one. If you want an SLI connection, you would need the SLI Bridge and for those cases, we recommend the set-up offered by the Area 51 R2.

Bruskus its a driver fail. You can read about it in some forums. Same problem with gtx 980 gpu.

There are some adapters for many notebooks
They cost less than 60$ you just need a seperate PLU and the alienware amp has it too... but with a case..

+Dylan Car Right now the only compatible laptops with the Graphics Amplifier are the newest 13 (R2), 15 (R2) and 17 (R2 and R3).

Unknown The processor won't get in the way, once you are using the amplifier you can get the most of the desktop GPU.

Ekin Dil Yes, you may use HDMI and Mini DisplayPort to connect an Alienware 13 to an external monitor. The screen shouldn't give you any trouble.

quick question, started doing alot of cgi work and i was wondering if there is any sort of way maybe even in future to leave the graphics card on the laptop on while the one on the AGA is running so as to have one handling the viewport on my laptop monitor while the one on the AGA handle the rendering
Whenever you connect the Graphics Amplifier, the desktop card takes over and is the only one being used. Dividing the tasks for each video card as you ask, is impossible.

At this current moment it is only compatible with the newest (13, 15 and 17) laptop models and the X51 R3 Desktop.

because this totally hasnt been tried before with the acer ferrari one, it was such a good idea but you could never buy the external box, it flopped before it went anywhere, since alienware is actually pushing this i expect that it will get somewhere but it wont stay, with the prices of these things its cheaper to buy a custom desktop and laptop

So like an hour ago i bought the 17 r3 with the 6700hq and 970m im looking forward to buy the amplifier but I keep hearing that pci x4 is going to bottleneck the 980ti and now I don't know what to do with the 27 inch 1440p 144hz monitor that is on the way

No, if you connect a video card to the Graphics Amplifier it will give priority to that one. If you want an SLI connection, you would need the SLI Bridge and for those cases, we recommend the set-up offered by the Area 51 R2.

From my understanding is that the PCI lane on the module is only running at 4x and not 16x.....which sucks.
Who honestly knows. Their website specifies that it's x16 electrically. But if I recall correctly, a PR stated its x4.
