I’m the same, when I moved to the UK we lived in my aunts house and she banned me from speaking Shona so that I could pick up British English. I was 10 years and then in our own house over the years we continued it, I spoke to my mum in English and she spoke in English. I lost my fluency in Shona and couldn’t hold a conversation, I can understand everything. I didn’t really notice for a long time because my whole family speaks don’t expect us to speak in Shona. A few years ago I decided I wanted to learn how to speak again at 30yrs old. I watch more Zim comedies more than Netflix and my Shona improved, now when I am around my elders I speak to them in Shona…I am so happy I have gained it back, it’s not fluent yet but I’m still working on it and I am now teaching my children some words too.
I can relate I have my kids in the UK,I have my aunty who said don't speak to them.innshona but haaa me and my husband we speak to them in shona ,we will see how it goes but they are progressing well in English aswell.
@@shanicetsitsimapurisana9962 Children will always pick up English from school, so you dont have to worry about that part. What you need to worry about is them losing their Shona, which is why you should speak to them exclusively in Shona. It is their identity after all 🤗
@shanicetsitsimapurisana9962 yes please insist on them speaking back to you in shona. I never stopped understanding shona but I lost it when I didn't speak back in shona at home. It's very embarrassing once you are older and can't speak fluently. I love my language now and my zim roots.
Regarding multilingualism, it is true that raising children in multilingual households can sometimes delay the onset of speech, as their brains are processing multiple linguistic systems simultaneously. This can lead to reduced exposure to Shona in daily interactions, which might be misunderstood as discouragement. Kana mwana akaita 4 years avakuenda kuchikoro asingatauri it becomes an issue here. No parent say handidi kuti mwana ataure shona. But you have to put the development of your child as a priority not to give in to societal pressure to speak both shona and English. Children are not all the same
@emazhawu4370 l went through the same with my kids. As long as mwana wangu achitaura vanhu vekuzimbabwe, they judge experiences that they have never experienced. English and shona are just language none of them are that superior than the other. Mwana anga avakutoendeswa ku maspeech therapy ndikati hezvo let's focus on the language inotaurwa kuday care one day akangotaura. What a relief

@ChrissieThefirst we understand but pavanenge vari vadiki a child can go mute kana kutaura and as a black child mwana akapuwa label kuno that's very hard to shake that stigma.
