To lock rear lockers in 4H. Put jeep in 4H, press the Off Road + button, press and hold the traction control button for 5 seconds. Now you can lock the rear lockers. Enjoy.....
Works that way in the gladiator rubicon as well. You should do a episode on the different type of offroad lights like hid to led and all the way to the new lazer type
Joined the Wrangler community with a 23 Rubicon about 2 months ago now. Been wanting an explanation for all the cool features that come with it, and those cool ass buttons. May have to watch the video a few times to take it all in, but this is an excellent starting point. Thanks for taking the time.
I use 4hi at highway speeds all the time in the winter. You can shift from 2 to 4hi at any speeds, as long as all four wheels spins at the same speed. I usually just let off the gas a bit to shift then get back on it. Recommended only when wheel slipping is possible (gravel roads, snowy or icy roads, etc)
I work in an ER and In 2010 when we had the back to back snow storms. I had a 2 door JK. I was the only one that made it to work for the next shift. And that’s why I have owned a Jeep since.
That’s why I bought the same Jeep but I’m still getting used to driving it in the snow. Do you just put it in 4H or do you make some other kind of adjustment?
Brand spankin new Jeep Rubicon owner as of Oct 12th and brand spaking new to 4WD. Thanks for the crash course on some of my features. I really appreciate you taking the time to put out this info.
Great video. I've watched many of yours and they are all well done. Most recently I added the recon fender flares to my Rubicon. After watching the video it only took about 45 minutes to complete. Keep up the good work and thank you for all the information.
Just got my gladiator rubicon for $66k fully loaded. Literally all options selected. I thought I might as well go big so I don’t regret not getting anything. I’m super happy with it. And I have the same color as you.
I watch another video if you go to off-road plus mode then turn traction control on then push and hold traction control to turn it off. You can lock the rear end in. The other thing I noticed with trash and control plus the sway bar doesn’t kick out at 10 miles an hour. I hope this is helpful.
Matt you definitely are a breath of fresh air is this over crowed and many times bias Jeep space here on RUclips. I came across your channel when looking for build ideas for our JL purple reign we are placing on order. If we can. Our dealer here in Toledo is saying the color fell off the build list last night bucause its not there today. They are looking into it more tomorrow. But anyways you rock dude. Love your content and mostly how you deliver the information. Smooth to say the least. Hopefully you can bring your HV ruby back to its brith place next year for Jeep fest Toledo in August. Would love to meet ya Matt.
In my '24 jl sport s, 4H works at highway speeds. Shift on the fly is fine at 75mph. 4L will go up to 35mph without over revving the engine, but does work best at 25mph or lower. The 850RE transmission will not allow shifting of gears or transfer case at unsafe speeds. The manufacturer recommends shifting into 4L while moving, between 1 and 3 mph ( always put your transmission in neutral before shifting into 4L).
Good job, Matt. The issue i've had with my '19, JLU Rubicon (2.0 Etorque) is that it can be hard to shift into 4Lo when driving up a steep incline: You have to use "N" to get the gears to mesh properly, but you also have to be moving (forward or back) a couple mile-per-hour, and that can be interesting on some, very tight shelf roads. Usually, you want to be in 4Lo before you get into that predicament, but it's not always possible if you don't know the trail. It seems strange that many vehicles that are nowhere near as capable (off-road) as Wranglers figured out how to shift into 4Lo ("fly by wire") effortlessly, but it can be an adventure with these late-model Wranglers.
Thank you for the explanation! I knew how to use the transfer case from owning my gladiator overland , but was unsure on how to use the off-road plus and diff lockers and sway bar disconnect. My dealership wasn’t helpful at all upon delivery. Had to learn the 8.4 screen by myself.
@ 4:20 the orange strap puts the transmission in neutral not the transfer case. Or, maybe the owners manual is wrong........ In 4hi + Off Road plus + hold traction control for 5 seconds = Rear Locker being avail.
Hey, I have a 2018 Sahara can I add the swaybar disconnect to my vehicle and how would you do it? Can you make a video on that, how to change non-Rubicon to a Rubicon, can you do a video on that please?
When you get your Tazer Mini, you can activate the lockers when you would like. Rear-Only in 2H, Front and Rear or Rear-Only in 4H. Usually it 4L only. Someone please verify - I could be wrong. Can't wait for the Tazer walkthru 🙂
Great video. Was just able to forward it to my dad, so he understands how to use these features in his new gladiator rubicon. Would love to see some future videos on recovery "how-to" do and don't things.
To use rear locker while in 4H: press off road+. This turns traction control off. While stopped, press and hold the traction control button. this will turn off the ESC. At that point, apply the rear locker. Enjoy.
Thanks this was really helpful. Been trying to figure out if you can lock the rears while in 4Hi.. When you say Stopped, do you mean you also need to be in park when holding down the traction control button?
Nice job on that maybe you could get into the difference between lockers and the brake Force differential on the sport s model I really like that on my sport s model could have used the lockers maybe a few times but it might have got me into more trouble than I could have dealt with thought that might be an interesting topic
To clarify (for 2024 Rubicon), butting into 4WD High does not lock the differentials, correct? It’s only locking the transfer case to tie tho Gerber the front and rear axles. If this is true and the differentials are not locked, then what’s the problem with making a turn on pavement in 4 High?
Do you have any experience or thoughts on adding a magnussen supercharger to a 2020 Gladiator Rubicon. I just purchased one with that setup, dual lithium battery configuration, and upgraded exhaust system. Thoughts!
For us female drivers THANK YOU for explaining things to us! Can you do a video showing ordering building online. I’m so lost on what features to pick for what we want to use our Jeep for.
As with all your content, I watch this when you published it, but had a JLU only. Just grabbed a new Willys, so it was great watching it again with purpose. As always, great content. 🔥🫡
Great video. Could you touch on the lockers next? Took mine off roading for its maiden voyage this weekend messed around with 4 high and off road plus. But left the lockers alone. Was on a fairly easy trail. Probably didn’t even need to put it in 4H but thought I would at least test it out.
That’s a good explanation. I am waiting on my 23 Willy’s Sport 2 door manual. I have been thinking I might miss out on some features but after seeing when you can use the lockers, I’m happy with what I have
I have a 2022 Willys Sport JLU with the 6sp and canvas top; it’s been sooo much fun as a daily driver. I have grandkids; otherwise I would have gone with the 2door!
Why does my keep gladiator make a clunking noise with it’s in 2 wheel drive but when I put it in 4x4 the clunking sound goes away. It’s a 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon
Im looking to join the jeep gladiator family. Im between buying a new 24 with locking rear - $38k or a 21 rubicon 45kmiles - $31k I likely wont do extreme rock crawling but i would like to earn the jeep trail badges. Any suggestions?
Excellent info on the 4x4 system, BTW where can I get extra bead lock rings like the ones you painted? would like to powder coat and extra set for my 2021 JLXR
Hilarious! And here I thought the Willys Sport was just a way to get that Rubicon “look” at a cheap price. Who knew it actually was a better vehicle for a Senior Citizen who just wanted to be the cool grandfather taking his grandkids camping. I also find that the Red Rubicon Shocks stiffen the side to side lean that the Sport has but since it still has Sport springs it soaks up road bumps better than a Rubicon. The Willys package and its more pleasant price point might be a great video as I surmise most folks use their Jeeps like me and would actually be happier not getting a Rubicon is it was explained to them vs. it being presented as driving a “less capable” Jeep. Capable really use situational!
Hey Matt great video. I would say though that with those with a non full time transfer case (like me) driving in 4H during a snowstorm at 45-50 isn’t terrible. If the conditions warrant then do it. Looking forward to more content.
Super helpful video. We’re new to jeeps. We picked up 2022 gladiator Mojave and 22 wrangler rubicon 2 door. In your 2.0l rubicon are you running regular unleaded or premium. I haven’t seen a definitive answer one way or the other. Just don’t want to mess up my brand new car. Thanks!
I’m pretty sure that orange pull is actually for the transmission neutral and is BAD to flat tow with. The transfercase is mechanically locked into gear and needs that shifter into the neutral position to disengage it from the transmission. Flat towing in transmission neutral and transfercase 2h will cause the transmission to rotate without full lubrication. That Orange pull should be just to disengage the parking gear so that a tow truck can move the vehicle.
I'm not familiar with the button to left never had jeep had one yet . But lift I bought not like what everyone else has be real lift should be using that we're I'm thinking should have bought ? Great choice of video answer some questions Matt thanks for great content video.
Thanks Matt another great video. Especially the off-road plus save me from having to look that up. What about lift kits specifically the Mopar lift kit versus others. Looking at the Mopar kit but I don't think I'm a fan but I don't wanna void my factory warranty either. Not to play along but your thoughts on bumpers would be good to. Thanks for all your doing.
Great suggestion! I Plan on doing a lift kit comparison video here soon, and bumpers can be a real tough decision as there are a ton, shoot me a contact us form on the website and I can get more in depth!
I’m still a bit lost. I’m a new Jeeper, lol. What does a sway bar do? I just really want to know, how can I make my 2 door 2021 Rubicon not slide or fishtail in the snow?Normally I use 4H in the rain or snow. Can I start it in 4H or do I have to shift up from 4L or 2H? I mean, I usually start it in 4H and sometimes it gets too grabby on the road if I’m trying to turn or just start out. Is that because I’m supposed to start in a different gear? Should I start in 2H and shift in 4H once the car starts rolling? What if I’m in extreme snow? What is the best I can do? 4L and 15 mph? I just want to make it through winter. I’m trying to be a mountain woman but it’s harder than I thought it would be, lol. I bought some chains and I’m guessing that’s definitely a 4L thing (not there yet). Thank God there is less snow this year than last year! Gotta get this down before I get snowed in. Please advise. 😅
Would love like a a best bang-for-the-buck Wrangler; I'm thinking it would be a Willys with the Xtreme Recon package, but is a two-door Rubicon without it a better option?
Hello Matt! In a future video can you please explain what is to “re-gear” the Jeep Wrangler? and when do we have to consider that option? Currently I have a 2021 Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon with the Mopar lift kit (2 - 2.5 inch higher) and 35” tires …. If in the future I move to 37” tires do I have to re-gear? Please help us to understand that
Do the offroad pages only show on the 8.4 sceen or are they available on the other one also? I tried the offroad + in my 21 JLU Rubicon and didn't get the offroad pages on the screen.
Question? Like your dad I have a 6sp Willys Sport with the Limited Slip Differential so while it doesn’t have lockers in actuality when driving in 2WD or even 4WD High on rural roads wouldn’t that mean it’s a tad more capable than a Rubicon which has open front & rear differentials unless locked? P.S. I bought the Willys to save money; but since 99% of the time I’ll just be using it on rural roads to deal with snow and muddy Fire Service ones it might actually be better than a Rubicon in that narrow band of usage. Who knew?
Hey Matt, great Channel had a quick question about your Rubi, by the way love the color. We purchased our first Rubicon this Summer with 2.0. We wanted to lift it like your setup just wanted to confirm 2.0 with larger tires works? XR package is mopar 2” lift with 35”’s? Thanks for any advice
I own a Gladiator Mojave, with the 4H, rear locker and off road + options. I understand I rear locker works only in 4L, but why? Is there a way to hack this and use off road + on 4H with rear lock?
From what I have read you can actually use the rear locker in 4H by holding the traction control button for 5 seconds and then hitting the rear locker!
I always wondered what the Off-road+ did. I’d really love to see a video about tire sizes with factory wheels. I’d like to go with 315/70-17 on my ‘22 factory Rubicon rims. What issues will I face attempting this? I’m never going to be doing serious off roading with it.
Hi Mike! You'd need to recalibrate your speedometer, and if it is a Rubicon, you shouldn't loose much power with the current gear ratio it has. It will give you less room on the wheel well, and there could be some rubbing on extreme turn angles. But I could be wrong on that last one since Rubicons come with a factory mini lift, it'd depend on the offset on your rims too. And lastly, I don't pretend to be a smart mouth or be disrispectful. But if you're never gonna do serious off-roading on a Rubicon trim, you could've saved some 20k$ and gotten a Willys. But it's definitely always nice to have the lockers and sway bar disconnect available. :)
@@solarmaple I contemplated for a couple weeks between the Willys and Rubicon. Comparing the two with all the safety packages, towing, cold weather, and 8.4” tech, the difference was only $2500. Considering the sway bar disconnect and lockers is what made me go with the Rubicon. I’m sure some day in the future I will do some more serious off roading. For now I’m just enjoying the newness and open air with the top off. I had an ‘87 Wrangler Laredo 30 years and loved it but, it was a dog on the interstate and the heater was pathetic in the New England weather.
Chris had some great feedback and there's not much to add past what he said, you will have some issues at full steer left and right with the wider tires, unless you do spacers which I'd stay away from unless you absolutely need to!
Is there any potential issue rolling around with off-road+ on (on the road) in the 392? I hear lots of guys talking about leaving it on all the time for the fun factor.
I really appreciate the explanations on the features. I have a question. We have a 2023 Rubicon JLU. I was wondering are the differentials completely open until locked or is there some sort of limited slip? The reason I ask. My pick up is a completely open diff and on our steep gravel driveway it struggles to get to the top because it’s a one wheel peel. The Rubicon on the other hand while completely in 2 Wheel Dr. makes it up no problem and you can even see two tracks where the gravels are sort of kicked up.
Aloha and good 🌟 evening 🌙 Matt. This is a very thorough and detailed explanation on the gears for the Jeep JT and Jeep JL models. This gives me a complete understanding for the uses of the gears from 2H to 4L and 4H Part Time. Great video 📼 Matt.🤜🤛📼🐶🐕🎓💪👀🤲👐🌟🔅🔍👍😎🤠😇💰🤓🏡🙌⛅🤙
To lock rear lockers in 4H. Put jeep in 4H, press the Off Road + button, press and hold the traction control button for 5 seconds. Now you can lock the rear lockers. Enjoy.....
This is right it works on my 392
This is why I love this community, I learn something new every time, and this is coming from a guy who's had over a dozen wranglers, THANK YOU ROBERT!
Works that way in the gladiator rubicon as well. You should do a episode on the different type of offroad lights like hid to led and all the way to the new lazer type
4xe same way?
When you’re on the freeway and its snowing hard, would you leave it in 2H,or put it in 4H and if you use 4H, would you still not go over 40

I just bought a Jeep today and watch my first video about gear systems. Thanks for the video…❤
you should make a video on how to properly shift into 4h, 4l, n, etc.
Maybe while off road?
I just picked up a 2021 Jeep gladiator and wondered exactly how this off-road plus button worked. This was very helpful. Thank you.!
Excellent information,Matt. Especially for the first timer like me. Good job! Thank you!
Thank you Mario!
This definitely cleared up any curiosity of the off-road + button! Love the videos, keep it up!
Thank you!
Yeah, the owners' manual is lacking in its description of "off road +".
Great video. I've watched many of yours and they are all well done. Most recently I added the recon fender flares to my Rubicon. After watching the video it only took about 45 minutes to complete. Keep up the good work and thank you for all the information.

@@WAVE_ZERO oh nice. How many miles when you got it?
Tazer JL allows you to lock the rear locker in 2 wd or 4wd high
Yes it does!
I watch another video if you go to off-road plus mode then turn traction control on then push and hold traction control to turn it off. You can lock the rear end in. The other thing I noticed with trash and control plus the sway bar doesn’t kick out at 10 miles an hour. I hope this is helpful.
I used to engage 4h with my truck doing 50mph and drove it up to 70 all the time with 100k+ miles on it.
Interesting to hear, glad it worked out

Thank you for this ive been looking for a while trying to find a video that could explain this for me. Super helpful 🤙🏽

Yes you can lock the rear lockers or both in 4h if you click and hold the track controll button to disegage the esc
4 LOW is always a little tricky to pop into, you are correct the gears have to mesh properly!
To avoid gear clash on my XJ, I usually turn the engine off to shift into 4Lo.

Just snagged a Rubi, I definitely needed this. Thanks!

Love the off road plus button!!! Works aswome for rock krawling 👍
It’s awesome!
Thanks for this video very helpful. I've been told never and ever press the rear lock🤔🤔 and i dont know why🤣🤣.

@ 4:20 the orange strap puts the transmission in neutral not the transfer case. Or, maybe the owners manual is wrong........ In 4hi + Off Road plus + hold traction control for 5 seconds = Rear Locker being avail.
Good tip on the rear locker, I thought mine wasn't working but it took a little longer than 5 seconds!
Sway bar disconnect moves free for disconnecting while moving under 17mph
Correct!
Hey, I have a 2018 Sahara can I add the swaybar disconnect to my vehicle and how would you do it? Can you make a video on that, how to change non-Rubicon to a Rubicon, can you do a video on that please?
Here’s a starting point

Another awesome and very helpful video! Thanks again! I’m learning a lot over here 🙌🏼
Happy to help!
i thought that "offroad-plus" button was for locking rear-axle-only in 4H mode.
Very good job on sharing information and going over the basics!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice job on that maybe you could get into the difference between lockers and the brake Force differential on the sport s model I really like that on my sport s model could have used the lockers maybe a few times but it might have got me into more trouble than I could have dealt with thought that might be an interesting topic
Thanks for the tip, great video idea!
The392 was mentioned in the video. Is this engine available in 2025? Getting conflicting information. Thanks
I’ve heard the Mojave will allow aft lockers in 4 high.

Thanks for watching! Lift videos coming soon!
i super noob at this but just got my jeep. What can locking the axles do?
I have a 2021 Gladiator diesel, I do not have the display on my stereo when I go to 4H or turn on Off Road+. Is that something the dealer can fix?
It should be updated if it’s a rubicon, you could take it to the dealer also!
Great video 👍
Thanks Ray!
Hi ! What is the maximum speed when you are in 4H auto ?
Would love like a a best bang-for-the-buck Wrangler; I'm thinking it would be a Willys with the Xtreme Recon package, but is a two-door Rubicon without it a better option?
Thats a great idea!
Please help us to understand that
That’s a great video idea!
Is there an option to add 4WD Auto for Rubicon? All I've seen are on Sahara models?
Yes there is!
Great explanation bro, 👍👍
Glad it was helpful!
Curious on why your didn’t get the auto transfer case, mind sharing?
To me its not a huge deal, I don't need to used 4 wheel drive as much on the road and do fine shifting back and forth!
So I can use off road plus as a sport mode while city/ highway driving?
I would only recommend it for off road driving
Do the offroad pages only show on the 8.4 sceen or are they available on the other one also? I tried the offroad + in my 21 JLU Rubicon and didn't get the offroad pages on the screen.
Thats interesting, I think they may just be for the 8.4 screen!
Who knew?
It will have a little more capability correct, the limited slip helps a lot!
I would like to hear about possible defects
Hmmm
Hey Matt, great Channel had a quick question about your Rubi, by the way love the color. We purchased our first Rubicon this Summer with 2.0. We wanted to lift it like your setup just wanted to confirm 2.0 with larger tires works? XR package is mopar 2” lift with 35”’s? Thanks for any advice
The Xtreme recon has the 1.5 inch lift and 35s! You’d be fine with larger!
Will you let know someone don’t know about 2L it is rear or front axle drive?
Rear wheel drive!
Any ideas for some cool decals I can put on my transfer case shifter if my Gladiator is a pavement princess? :)
I believe Jeep Graphics studio had some really neat billet shifter caps!
For a 392 should you use off road plus in 4H Auto or 4H part time when on sand?
I would use 4H part time
Thanks for the reply!
How fast can you go in 4H with a Mohave?
Is there any potential issue rolling around with off-road+ on (on the road) in the 392? I hear lots of guys talking about leaving it on all the time for the fun factor.
I would imagine it would be okay at lower speeds I definitely wouldn't push it on mine, or instead buy a Tazer and roll around in 2wd
Do you know if the manual transmissions still have off road plus?
Yes they do!
@@DIRTROADCRED thank you sir!
What does sway bar do
Allows more articulation up front!
Great question, they are completely unlocked unless you lock them!
@@DIRTROADCRED great thanks!
Thank you brother! I always love to read your comments, they are very nice!
35mph max in 4-hi? 😬 running around Idaho, Montana, Colorado on snow compacted roads 60mph is pretty much how winter driving is done…
Nice!
21 MPG on 37s?! How do you do that?
Very conservatively!
