- Cupar is a little wee town in the kingdom of Fife, with a rich and vibrant history. Its central position has been important from the earliest times, and the name is believed to have Pictish origins. It grew around the site of the medieval Cupar Castle, which was the seat of the sheriff and owned by the Earls of Fife. Cupar was a seat of justice for 600 years, with early justice being dispensed on Moat Hill. One of Scotland’s oldest royal burghs, it was visited by most of Scotland’s monarchs. From medieval times it was an important trading center.

From NZ we first visited Cupar one day in 2004.. came up from town ( Edinburgh),, took bus towards Dairsie then got off and walked a few km to Kemback, where my wife's father grew up in the 20-30s.... walked back to the A91 ,, by bus to Leuchars then train back to Waverley.
Last visit around Aug 17-19th Aug 2016 we stayed a couple of nights at a very comfortable, modernised place up a slight rise from the centre of Cupar and 10 mins walk from the railway station... this time we were able to drive out to Kemback and up to the ancient churches and graveyard..seeing two of my wife's relatives named among the fallen in WW1,, a Joseph Burns and,,*..this on the memorial on the (relatively) modern church.
I could only imagine how cold and dismal the whole place must have been growing up there before WW2, fine in summer, but otherwise.....
