Spock's Beard - the gift that keeps on giving.
The Doorway. One of the best SB tracks.
Now, you're in the magic era of Spock's Beard... Beware of Darkness and Kindness of Strangers. The vanguard of the Prog renaissance. I was fortunate enough to see SB in a couple of tiny (now extinct) bars in Philly in those days... Upstairs at Nick's and The North Star Bar. As a long time veteran of Yes, Genesis, Rush, Kansas concerts, these shows had an incredible specialness to them due to the intimacy. They were celebrations from start to finish. "The Doorway" rates for me among the all time personal top concert moments.
That pianos tuning sounds exactly like the one on ELP's Trilogy.
Gimme all the Neal Morse!!!
I only thought I was a fan of Spock's Beard, having six of their albums in my collection, but I never knew this album existed. I am really enjoying it! The first side is fantastic, and if the second side is as good as the first, I'll be adding this album to my collection. Thanks, Jim!! ❤✌
Awesome! "The Doorway" is one of my Spock's Beard favorites. You can definitely tell the difference in how unpolished this recording is compared to "V" that you previously listened to.
I love Thoughts. Sounds very Gentle Giant-ish
I'm sitting here with the exact same headphones on. I bought this album when 2 years after it was released. I can't believe how long ago that was.
Great headphones, amazing album!
The song "Chatauqua" is probably pronounced "Shuh - TAWK - wuh".
There's a Chatauqua Peak in Australia but there is Chautauqua in New York state in the US. I have not heard what it is in reference to or an exact correct way to say it. The latter spelling is an Iroquois word, and appears in many places in the US.
All I know is that I love Spock's Beard. 😁
Got this when it came out and saw the band play every year here in LA. The Doorway is my favorite song they ever did.
I miss peak Spock's Beard so much.
Aaah, my favourite album of The Beard. Thx Jim 👍
OOOOooooohhhhhhh yyyeeeessss !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good evening Jim,
The Beard is back.
Don’t know this or the previous album. I only know albums of this age. And those are (mostly) great; I love them.
Good old progressive rock, I like this very much.
As with all progrock bands, they have their similarities with other bands. It’s the type of mixture combined with unique features (like a flute or singer) that defines the band.
I saw them play some of this album @ Progfest’95 in LA.
Your CD arrived today!!!!
AWesome,Jim! Been waiting on more reacts to Neal Morse material. Hope you can follow along with 'Kindness Of Strangers', 'Day For Night',and 'Snow' ( the double concept and Neal 's final SB album before going solo and on to Transatlantic,Neal Morse Band and Flying Colors). You're just scratching the surface, matey! Cheers :-) T
Thank's so much for your wonderful reaction. No problem with the delay, it's all good.
I wrote two longer versions but both were mysteriously removed.
How strange! Not by me... thanks so much for this request. Loving it!
I always thought Spocks beard was Uhura.🖖🙂
Lol!
It's Nurse Chapel. 😉
I've been stuck in a Genesis, Floyd, Supertramp, ELO vacuum for years. Suddenly amazed listening to Spock's Beard and 'Snow', I've rushed quickly through most of their catalogue. IMO 'Snow' live is an experience, but the studio album is also great + 'The Light' and 'The Kindness of Strangers'. 'Snow' as a concept is similar to 'The Lamb', but I prefer it. It takes something to drag me away from Genesis!
As a 'melody man', I love 'progressive', but I question what 'prog' became often known by, in it's self indulgent chaotic keyboard work by some.
I'll have to have another listen to 'Beware of Darkness.'
'Very Neal Morse' - true and also the other influences that you mention but I'm not sure that you've heard any Kevin Gilbert who was an associate of Spock's Beard and who died in the same year that this album came out. His 'The Shaming of the True' is similar to the early SB sound and many would contend superior. Beware of Darkness is an excellent album though.
This album was my first album pf them. I like this a lot. Not every SB album is my cup of tea. Great review Jim
Opinions eh?... Not fussed about this one but love 'Snow', Kindness of Strangers' and 'The Light.'
I love George Harrison, but "Beware of hearts that linger" is an unfortunate lyric :)
Just an FYI - SB had a Gentle Giant style chorus on 1 song on each of the Neal Morse albums (pretty sure about all).
Mate, I just watches your videos listening to I like it here album. For all that is jazzy, funky and groovy, do yourself a favor and listen to Live is the Message by alfa mist and yussef dayes at Abbey Road. Please. I honestly don't know how people that mention that enough (is not even closely enough).
I have no clue what you're reacting to! More Kansas, Boston, Styx, Toto, Journey, please! Thank you!
Man you picked my least favourite Neal Morse-era SB album to listen to :( You need to try Day for Night. Varied assortment of songs, all of them very high qual.
It's OK with occasional touches of brilliance. However, this is prog - out of a box labeled "prog", adhering to established tropes, alas. Most progressive bands built their very own iconic style, that is they progressed today's excellence into something new, something unique.
And I don't hear that here :( But, it's OK.
This was my favorite SB album for quite a while, probably until V or Snow. I enjoyed the Neal Morse era better than the subsequent years but still make room for the Ted Leonard era as well.
