How was it at that time?
@@bearscratchproduction Well, as you might expect, the island overall was much less visited and many less tourists. I am sure it is still beautiful, but then it was so rustic and still so untouched.
I attended the Pythagorean Institute of Painting and lived in the studio which was just across the road from Gagou beach ( one small hotel and rarely more than 10 people on the beach ! ). There were about 20 or 30 students there at any given time, and it seemed that everyone in Vathy knew who we were ! The people in Vathy, and everywhere, were so friendly and accommodating, always smiling and eager to help with whatever we needed. We spent some weekends in Pythagorio, sleeping on the beach, and on a Saturday night it was uncommon to see more than 30 or 40 people in the cafes and tavernas. Kokarri stole my heart and I went there as often as I could. There were only a handful of cafes along the waterfront and there was a single little white-washed stucco house on that little piece of triangular rock where now there appears to be a cafe and condos of some sort.
Now, almost 50 years have passed. The smell of olive trees, wild herbs, and chickens on a grill... the sounds of the waves gently washing the beach and the laughter of locals enjoying their time at 'Sto Mavro Catos', late at night as I lay on the roof of the Studio.... the sight of the intensely Blue Aegean and the contrast of the white-washed geometry.... and the effect on all of my senses remain with me still.
The first photographs I ever made were on Samos that year. I went on with a career as an advertising photographer for 40 years following. I could say that those were some of the best photographs I ever took, but I don't think I really took them. Samos gave them to me. And I think she will continue to give..... to all those who visit. ;)
