  • In today's Cosmere Lore video, we'll be discussing the main kingdoms from Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series.
I recently made videos on Vorinism from the Stormlight Archive as well as the planet of Roshar. And while I am happy with what was covered in those videos, I’ve increasingly become aware of just how deep the Roshar rabbit hole goes. There’s just so much to explore in the Stormlight Archive novels and I doubt I’d ever run out of things to talk about. In light of this revelation, I thought I should at least cover more cultural topics from these books.
That’s when I realized just how much there is to cover when there are so many different cultures on Roshar. Before I can even think about covering more specific topics, I need to at the very least cover some of the major kingdoms that can be found on Roshar.
So today, we’ll be covering some of the major kingdoms that can be found on Roshar and what makes them unique in both achievement and culture.

I enjoy these videos, but I have to say that the constant filters being applied randomly, in the vein of old VCR recordings, gets tiresome very quickly. It also made me wonder if my screen was having issues the first time I noticed it. I understand the intent (unless it's a copyright issue as well, though fair use should apply) but, personally, it detracts from the otherwise pleasant experience.

Decided I wanted to reread the series and freshen up on lore in anticipation for the TTRPG releasing. This was a great refresher and had great structure. Very cool, thank you!

Cool video! I feel like the big 5 may be expanded to the big 7 in the back 5 books though, considering Iri and Babatharnam both have oathgates!

Very well researched video! I've read all the books so far, but I'd forgotten several interesting details about the geography and especially Shinovar. Very excited to learn more about it from Szeth's perspective in the next book!

I never understood why the Shin call everyone Stonewalkers. Where else they supposed to walk?

The land of Shinovar is covered mostly in soil and vegetation, so, contrary to the other lands of Roshar, you can easily explore most of Shinovar without worry of stepping on stone. This is because the mountains surrounding Shinovar protect the land against highstorms, which allowed the Shin grass to evolve more akin to grass in real life, as opposed to grass across the rest of Roshar which retracts into the stone to avoid the wrath of highstorms, or simply to avoid being stepped on.
Shin people very rarely leave their own lands, so most Shin never have to worry about the prospect of trying to get around without stepping on stone, as would be difficult in broader Roshar.
Spoilers for Way of Kings ahead:
Szeth-son-son-Vallano is considered "Truthless." This condemns him to being a "stonewalker" because he is banished from the lush fields of Shinovar. The fact that he must walk on stone does not absolve him from the sin, however, which he must atone for in the afterlife, even though he is forced to do so by his masters commands.
To quote Szeth's thoughts directly from Way of Kings:
"How could these Easterners not walk on stone? There was no soil in their lands. How could they get about without treading on stone? ... Though his (Szeth's) murders and sins (the sin of walking on stone being one of the sins he has committed) would damn him, at least his soul would be given to the stones upon his death. He would continue to exist. Punished, in agony..."
Later in the book, King Taravangian questions Szeth:
"Was this your destiny? Do you wonder? ... cast out and absolved of any sin your masters might require of you?”
      Szeth answers:
“I am not absolved ... have no choice, but to bear the sins nonetheless. I am Truthless.”
So yes, it is odd that the Shin call everyone else stonewalkers, because, like you asked. Where else they supposed to walk?

Now I don't wholly agree with what is said in the video, yes Alethkar Jah-keved Thaylenah and Azir are 4 of the most economically and military wise powerful kingdoms, but Shinovar has no great reason to be on this list. They're fairly isolationist and dont have any large economic power. While they have a standing army, warriors are seen as the lowest of men, so I doubt they'd have many warriors. We also don't have any evidence for their capabilities apart from the shin invasions a couple thousand years ago. To sum it up I see no great reason for them to be on this list and they could have been replaced by Iri or Babatharnam, as these kingdoms seem to be as powerful/dominant.
