Likewise! I've been coming since the 90's as it's my local NT and like you, I still find things that I either haven't seen before and I didn't know about. I love making the time to visit throughout the year to watch how it changes with the seasons.
My dog and I stayed in the wonderful National Trust cottage Ticknall Lodge at the entrance to Calke a year and a bit ago. It was an absolutely amazing week of exploring and I don’t think we managed to see everything! There is so much to see and so many great walks! Lovely place! xx
Oh yes! The white one just as you drive in? I'm so glad you've had the opportunity to explore around this area, it really is lovely and so much to see and do. Did you walk across to Staunton Harold? x
@@theslowtravelsfamily yes, we walked to the reservoir and had ice cream! The history of the local area around Calke, Staunton Harold and Ticknall is fascinating. Industrial, natural, social - history for many interests! Definitely going back soon ❤️
Oh lovely! That's a great walk :) There is one in the opposite direction, leaving the back entrance of Calke Abbey head right (instead of left towards the reservoir) and you'll go through a mini nature reserve before arriving at Staunton Harold Hall. The house is privately owned but the church is NT and there's a great garden centre there too. Worth keeping in mind if you get to pay a visit again ❤️

Thank you :) Glad you've paid this beauty a visit. It's a fantastic estate! I love all the old parks too, they have so much history to them. Did you visit the 1000 year old oak on any of your visits?
I'm so pleased you enjoyed this peek inside Calke Abbey! It's a truly fascinating place that always intrigues me, no matter how many times I've visited. I've got plenty more country houses lined up to share, especially in the run up to Christmas when they've got their festive decorations up!
It very much feels that way, I love the faded beauty though 🥰 It’s such a wonderful insight into what life would have been for this family and their slow decline. I find it absolutely fascinating! I’m glad the National Trust kept the property in this state instead of renovating it and restoring it to its former glory. I much prefer the story of its gradual, slow decline.
It's my local NT too :) I love having it on our doorstep, like you say, even just for a walk around the grounds or to head off by the reservoire or even walk up to Stanton Harold and enjoy a visit to the garden centre and church there
Thank you so much, we really appreciate it :) Happy to have shown you some place knew. That's one thing I love so much, especially here in the uk, there is so much to discover right on your own doorstep! I hope you enjoy your visit to Calke x
The best piece I've ever seen on my favourite 'unstately' home! I've been to England twice (in Aus) but never managed to get up to see Calke, hopefully on my next trip which I plan to be a permanent move! Quite agree on your autumn feelings; I've subscribed and I'm off to watch a few more. ❤

@@theslowtravelsfamily It's a very exciting move, I've been planning it for years - decades really. Hoping to settle in the west country, around the Wiltshire/Somerset border. Start with some bnb's in Frome and then see what happens! 😍
What a gorgeous part of the country! I absolutely love it round that way, in fact I'll be back there again next week. There is the BEST curry house in Frome, The Royal Bengal I think it's called - absolutely incredible Indian food. Bnb's sound a great plan :) I wish you all the best with it!

Danville,IL is seeking to kill all historic buildings. They neglected then leveled the Cannon Elementary school 2 mos ago and now have sights to level Breese Tower, which someone with vision bought and city set every possible roadblock not caring that pandemic upended plans. Those of us who have bought the old houses are harassed to get all the work done instantly while funds are lavished on the tea room that is not historic either. So frustrating
The history of America is the story of the Native Indigenous tribes who lived there for thousands of years. Unfortunately the incoming settlers and immigrants tried to destroy and erase that history and only part of it remains. If you're not Native American then you are a descendant of immigrants and from overseas. Your family's homelands are still there overseas for you to visit. Native people still exist. You haven't managed to genocide everyone
Loved this video, another wonderful place on my doorstep, never been inside, so sad that we are losing so many wonderful buildings because of the cost of keeping them.
Ooh have you not? You definitely need to go pay another visit and take a peek inside, this video doesn't do it justice. There's simply too much to see to be able to share here. I agree! These houses and buildings are such a part of our history and they need preserving. It's one of the reasons I'm so keen to support them, whether they're privately owned still or just being a National Trust & English Heritage member, it all makes a difference to the future of these estates. It would be such a shame to lose them.
How great! I wrote my Master's thesis at the University of Manchester on Calke Abbey and Brodsworth hall ( Yorkshire) both historic houses which have been preserved as found. So I was delighted that this popped up. Brings back many lovely memories of my visits there over 30 yrs ago. Thanks.

The house is kept really dark and curtains/shutters drawn in most rooms so that the paintings and furnishings don't suffer from the light damage. Then in the winter months the National Trust tend to get teams of specialists in for expert cleaning and preservation of each item. Quite a task!
The tunnels in the garden have not long been uncovered. They're still excavating another at the moment. It's nice that in a small way they are bringing the gardens back to their original life yet at the same time preserving a lot of the outbuildings in their dilapidated state. As far the tunnels that lead from the main courtyard in the house through to the brewery, I'm not sure what they do for the upkeep of those I'm afraid.
The Church of St Giles.
