Depends on one's personality. I think technology connects, for good, bad, and ugly. My rule is this: don't get into the mire. Ignore rudeness and smart Alecks and try to learn and share something from your connections.

Agree--so many comments online are needlessly rude when they could easily be civil and make the same point. I think the LIKE BUTTON may be responsible for a lot of the snark and meanness on the internet--people trying to one-up each other in 'us vs them' debates and getting rewarded and encouraged with a thumbs up or a heart. I often have to catch myself on what I "LIKE" and respond to because I don't want to contribute to the negativity and competition of it all. It sometimes takes a lot of self control to ignore nasty comments, but it's a good exercise!

Excellent conclusion, technology is the vehicle to connect or isolate. It's people who connect or isolate themselves. Thanks for addressing this important topic.

I have always thought of technology as a tool. As a hammer is to a carpenter. A clever is to a butcher. A stove is to a chef. All bad analogies, but you get the picture. As Leo said people need to take responsibility for how that technology is used. If one is an isolationist then technology will be a tool to achieve isolation. If one is an exhibitionist technology is an excellent tool for that purpose. In the end be responsible for how that tool is used. JustSaying.

The endless 24/7 political "news" cycle has finally caused me to disconnect from all of it. It's devolved into repetitive, speculative soap operas. I've wasted hours on it. No more.

I loved this phylosophical take on tech coming from you, Leo. Very surprising on a channel focused on straightforward tech problems, I mean, there are plenty of topics discussed here which are beyond troubleshooting, but this and the privacy issue are one of the outliars and they were great too. On the subject, recently I've stepped outside of my virtual bubble and it has been healthier than an apple a day. I subscribed because of trustful ways to solve daily inconveniences but also got this as a bonus. Thanks for the wisdom shared.

Yes.. technology connects, if society is sick, technology helps to spread and grow that sickness. There is no simple answer, but an answer must be found.

Not long ago, a family member complained about "people today" and "They" and I reminded them--YOU are people, YOU are part of "They." The world and the internet is so big, sometimes we feel small, powerless and disconnected.
We don't have to accept "people on the internet are nasty" or "the world is so divided"--WE are people on the internet and shouldn't underestimate the power of even one positive or civil comment.
Thanks for the thoughtful messages @askleonotenboom. I'll TRY to take your advice and inspire myself to connect with my local government representatives--one of those things I know I should do but never get around to because for some reason, it feels much more satisfying and comfortable to complain and do nothing.
