I am 81. House is paid off.. Health is pretty good. Thing is, there is nothing I "want." I don't want a new/different car or an in ground pool or new cell phone or any "thing," My needs are met. So I can spend my time hiking or watching birds or butterflies. I am content.

Imagine the contentment you have at 51, 41, 31. Crazy cool. I last 'worked' at 31 in 2002 but did unconventional things like live in a trailer park on purpose for 5 years. Congrats to you!

If you have some money that you don't need, I'll be happy to use some. $20,000 would be appreciated.

That’s great John but you still have “wants” right? You want to hike, to watch birds and butterflies. I think that’s the point of her talk. You have to “ want” something whether it’s material things or experiences or you go around lost

I'm in my 50's and i'm there. I've never been materialistic. Money to me is all about freedom.

I absolutely loved our journey to FI/FIRE, and there's no way I'm going back to work - freedom from schedules, meetings, deadline, targets, and stress is what we wanted, and that's exactly what we got. I also loved the movie Playing with Fire: The Documentary - it should have been distributed on Netflix.

Love that for you! And thank you, I agree that Netflix would be a good home. Never say never!

LOVE this. I am a 30-something in debt but have lived so deeply, had a purposeful life as a teacher, lived & seen many countries and can’t say I regret it-but also value the debt free life that I am working towards now!

"You have to want something more than you want stuff. You have to want something more than the life that you have in order to make the journey worthwhile. Otherwise, it feels like deprivation." - Vicki Robin

I want freedom. REAL freedom. Not "oh I have a good job and get paid well," freedom.

Look at money as positive energy. it's your best friend.a loving relationship. it's lovely to feel abundance and wealth but you are only healthy & wealthy today only as tomorrow is not promised it's a gift to have another chance to live another day only as the present moment is the future 3 things money cant buy 1 health 2 true love 3 time ❤️

I've been at this long before there was even a name for it. The best thing that money can buy is financial freedom and peace of mind...everything else is a distant second. Besides, living a wonderfully frugal lifestyle isn't about deprivation, it's about finding alternatives that are less expensive or free but also better. For instance learning how to cook really well from scratch to the point of making dining out nothing but an expensive disappointment. Making use of the river of free and hardly used computers and electronics. Finding new ways to use energy that saves big and buying everything on sale including going with used when it makes sense. Never forget to relish all of the additional free time that's not spent shopping, working extra hours and paying higher taxes. Gotta love what you can do with your 1040 without the need of money to spend and instead over-save for retirement and completely eliminate your income tax liability both now and in the future. Before you know it you'll be in the position of being able to more than double your income by tapping your investments if you chose to but you have absolutely no need of additional spending and doing so would interfere with your long term tax (free) plan. Besides, you're already shoving money into your accounts as it is.
    Cheers!

I’m 30, no debt, able to save 30% each month. However problem is, there’s always something we’re saving towards So it doesn’t go to investments. Wedding, honeymoon and travelling (which we love and want), a house, private maternity care, then hopefully children. It’s like….when can we actually grow that money?!

My want is to NOT be on anyone else’s agenda without my consent. Once I clarified this I found staying on the FI path to be easy.
