This is a vital conversation we need to be having right now. I'm glad she's still thinking deeply and sharing her insights and wisdom in this area.

Welcome to Sweden. Free healthcare and free college education. With a twist. Tax on a middle-class income is 30%. And the tax on things you buy is, in most cases, 25%.

Hi Sweden, you have 100,000 illegal immigrants; the US has 28 million. Do you know how much it would cost to give health care to 28 million illegal immigrants on top of the 60 million who already get free health care?

I'm from Canada and my cost of low grade public "health care" is a 50% tax of my income. It's so bad I pay for surgery in Mexico now. Be careful what you wish for.

@@Yabadabado1234 It really is sad what's happening in Canada. My former boss, who lives in Canada, had to have nerve surgery on his arm but had to wait one year because it was not considered urgent. He finally had his surgery a year later, but now has permanent nerve damage. That is just unacceptable.

Swedish people are known as the “happiest” country in the world because they are willing to pay the high tax in order to provide the necessities of wellbeing(e.g. healthcare, affordable housing/education). They understand the concept of pay now or pay later(e.g poor health, no pensions, high homeless rates).

I would love to know what Vicki has in mind to get those in power to change their mindset and help with free healthcare and education. It's good to have the discussion, but really interested on how this can happen.

She's saying that if we had a movement of FIRE people focusing on this, there could be real change. These things take decades to develop, so we will see.

Nothing is free. I had lunch with a gentleman formerly living in Canada that moved to the USA 15 years ago. When he left Canada 52% of his income went to taxes which helps pay for universal healthcare and education. Same thing in several nordic countries; are you willing to pay it forward where 72% of your income goes to taxes that pay for universal almost everything? It might just work out just fine.

I have a corporate job at age 60 that offers no health care at an affordable price.

She’s a little off toured, the end when she says that people want to give their gifts and talents to the marketplace. That’s idealistic. Many people end up with jobs to pay bills, but not able to follow their passion. “ do what you love, the money will follow “ is another book that has not proven true for most people. At least young people in 20-30’s that I know.

Universal healthcare is most successful and efficient if it is privately organized and regulated by the government and made mandatory for citizens who pay for it themselves. That leaves people with an incentive to lead a healthy lifestyle, plan for the cost of treatment while also not going broke when they need treatment. Plus, the elected government remains in exchange with the healthcare providers and can compromise on keeping the cost fair.

I don’t see all these government interventions and powers will result in financial independence- in fact it’s more likely to cause the opposite

Nothing should come free in life. Or seem like it is a free social good. People should always have a little pain paying for services such as healthcare and education. Because then they have an incentive to make wiser choices and think about the things that happen. Go and achieve what you want not on the backs of others people and the government.
